Wimbledon Day 8
First topic message reminder :
So we are nearing the business end of Wimbledon.
Federer is up against Robredo looking to avenge his US Open defeat last year.
Nadal will face the new kid on the block Kyrgios.
Wawrinka is up against Lopez and Raonic will face Nishikori.
On the ladies side Sharapova against Kerber.
Kvitova, Lisicki and Halep all in action.
Interestingly enough Wimbledon is the only event not to have Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray all clash in the Semi's. So could we see that duck get broken?

I know a lot of women support Nadal and I'm sure it's not for his tennis. Lopez is popular too.

Quite right, CJ, These are people too. That's why I backed Kerber for the win, based on tennis, and not the fact that she's drop dead gorgeous.

Re: Wimbledon Day 8
Federer looking REGAL right now. The only reason he wouldn't win this title right now is if he freezes against the expected match up in the semis and doesn't come ib

It's only Robredo on grass. Tougher tests await. Who's he got next?

No clue, but he has some guy who got a first round knockout last year lined up in the semi final.
Poor Nadal has a seven time champion who beat him here twice before, in his semi.

Granted juan he'd have Lopez ir the stanimal next which is much harder. He's just not dropping points in serve Call it a feeling if you like

Re: Wimbledon Day 8
the winner of the Isner-Wawrinka match isn't it? bit of a serve-fest at the moment that one. Average rally about 2.3 strokes...

Of course, the Stanimal!! (He's 1 set up on Lopez and the second appears to be heading to a TB too).

Re: Wimbledon Day 8
Must say, I don't like serve-athons, and the Lopez matches just reaffirm that. But yesterday's Djokovic-Tsonga third was the most intense set I watched in a while.

Wawrinka got lucky there, Lopez had more than enough chances to clinch the TB but got really tentative on the big shots.

Story of his career. A better mindset and he'd be a top 15 player despite not having a backhand.

once more you'll find the correct term is "grasscourt walkover", please take this on board, I've had enough of this "journeyman" nonsense.

Re: Wimbledon Day 8
Federer eventually closes it out after a bit of ding-dong in that final game. Still yet to drop serve in these championships (I think), and judging by the way his potential opponents in the next round are returning today he might not in the next round either!

Lopez serves are really not all that Stan needs to sort out his returning though!
Federer is a Bugatti of a server on grass and returns his fair share = easy Fed win.

Well, so much for my fears about Fed having a tough match with Tommy. Looks like it's gonna be an all-Swiss quarter final.

Well Fed seems to be sneaking through the draw.
6 hours and 2 minutes on court so far this tournament.

Thought if Stan can beat Nadal, I don't mind Fed losing to him, in hope that Stan can crush Djoko again

Re: Wimbledon Day 8
well done wawrinka. he needed a good result here.
it will be a real test for federer.
but to be honest, federer is surprising me in this edition. its true he had a nice draw (he could have met bennetau, mahut, hewitt, instead he got, muller, giraldo, robredo) but still. at this point. I see him in the semis, and even if it were to meet nadal, I can picture him in the final
and I didnt expect roger to ever be in a final again. of course if it was going to be, wimbledon was the place
but he seems focused, well trained and in good shape

Helped by the fact that when the pressure is on, 80% of the WTA become incapable of hitting even a remotely competent serve. The Special Juan wrote:This is unbelievable! As much as I don't like her, Sharapova is the mentally toughest player on either tour.
