So the nation with the average tallest people go through.
Well played both sides, a little sorry for Costa Rica but the Krul sub was very timely indeed.

Re: Rio de Janiero - 2014 Fifa World Cup Thread
I wouldn't say the substitution exactly worked as the penalties saved were fairly weak efforts... Krul should have saved the first one as well!
Difficult to predict the semifinals.
I feel Germany are doing slightly better than Brazil, but the hosts have home advantage and some...other advantages on their side as well, shall we say.
Both Holland and Argentina are doing fairly averagely; the former peaked in their first game, and the latter have just meandered.
Such a wide-open tournament will further frustrate England, as they could have given it a real go. Just think, that penalty when Gerrard is toppled over gets given and Godin gets sent off. England could have beaten Greece, could have had this Dutch side on Toast, and be turning their attentions to average Argentina.
And the World Cup itself, right now, could be there on the horizon in all her glistening glory, calling out to dear, sweet England to take her home after all these forlorn years in the foreign wilderness.
It could have been ours; Roy could have had it all. Maybe my fractured, broken dreams will take me to such a place.

Re: Rio de Janiero - 2014 Fifa World Cup Thread
It's was a psychological ploy in bringing Krul on, it's taken all the pressure off the players and put it entirely on himself, if they'd lost we'd be talking about what an odd decision it was rather than what a poor penalty by whoever.

Re: Rio de Janiero - 2014 Fifa World Cup Thread
Not sure it's a massive story, Krul's obviously been performing very well in training, therefore, you go with your best GK for that situation. Krul had done the work & went the correct way each time, you can't save every penalty but he did the business & it worked for LVG. Agree, took the pressure away from the pen takers & all on LVG. Just glad Holland are through & will make a better spectacle vs Argentina. Costa Rica have been magnificent & should be proud but they've gone as far as they could possibly go.

Re: Rio de Janiero - 2014 Fifa World Cup Thread
I find it pretty shocking that a lot of people on this site actually feel like Neymar got what he deserved or was faking at the time when he got kneed in the back. When I saw the knee in the back it looked pretty vicious and at least deserving of a yellow card. Neymar isn't even as close to as big a diver as Robben, I still don't want either guy to be injured and knocked out of the tournament. Some of the commentary during the Brazil match and even after the news that the kid had a fractured vertebrae on this site has been pretty harsh and borderline grotesque. Neymar is a major talent and has carried an anemic Brazil attack in this world cup, I certainly don't watch tournaments and hope that players like him get their vertabrae crushed and get knocked out of tournament they have worked for 4 years to win. In fact, I read reports that a couple of inches up and the kid could have had a career ending or even crippling injury.

if 31 other teams ate lasagna prepared by Tottenham's chef then England could have won the world cup.
