First topic message reminder :
The 5 test series cramped into a 42 day schedule gets underway at Trent Bridge tomorrow. The 2 middling sides have a lot to prove. Hopefully we'll get to have some exciting cricket.

He's a shocking player.
8 Tests outside England he averages mid 20s. With only 2 50s.
4 cheap hundreds on these crap pitches shows how crap he is.
A bit OTT to suggest he's a "shocking" player?
Just ignore Gerry...he's a well-known WUM. Nothing he posts is worth reading (he's been on my ignore list for ages).

435/9, trail by 22. I would declare now - seriously! India are demoralised and don't expect it. Give 'em 20 minutes before lunch. Nothing for Cook to lose and a lot to gain.

That would be the positive / proactive option, but you have to remember Cook tends to be defensively-minded. I reckon he'll want to get ahead of India, no matter how small the margin.
Plus the rate Jimmy's going, he could be on for a ton of his own...now that really would be unbelievable!

In the words of Mrs. Thatcher: "I'm enjoying this, I'm enjoying this!"
England have, at the very least, trapped India in a dead end, and will be able to have a real go with the ball in the knowledge that a win for the visitors will be highly unlikely.
And isn't Anderson just darling?

What do we do now?. its a really tough one- we have gone from being in good shape to get a draw to this!
For me let the last make history and go for a double hundred partnership with jimmy getting a ton , get a 70 odd lead then bowl them out for 100 when they are demoralized

Lol! Possibly a tad optimistic but England are most definitely in the ascendancy now. Reckon India will bat pretty much as they did in the first innings, so England will need to be a bit cleverer, if they are to get them out cheaply (or at least to give themselves a chance of the win).
This is currently the 4th largest last-wicket stand in the history of Test cricket...nice!

Re: England v India First Test Trent Bridge
An England win is still a huge outside bet, but we can be glad that che chances of defeat have been negated hugely.
What would it take for an England win? Lead of 50 (minimum), and then shoot India out for below 200 on a dead surface.
Tricky!

Strange - at this point you would think we would just run for anything- but the lads are still playing to a plan. Its good tbh. This is taking the p!ss out of india-Make sure we just get the lead which will make them blush. This could be the winning partnership of the series.

Re: England v India First Test Trent Bridge
I wasn't expecting Cook to declare but throwing it out there as a possibility and saying what I would do from my armchair!
Whatever happens, it'll be good for England if the Indian opening batsmen only have 10 minutes to get ready after we finish our innings rather than the whole luinch break.

I quite like your lateral thinking there , guildford . I imagine you were a fairly innovative captain in your playing days ?
Might have been worth a try - too late now - but the other side is that bowling India out quickly on this is still rather unlikely ; so grinding them into the dirt for as long as possible might be even better ?
An actual lead for England would be an improbable feather in their cap ...and would also help to deflate India . But even more the drag on their bowlers ... Every extra over of toil is chipping away at their morale.

Re: England v India First Test Trent Bridge
Jimmy brings England level with India with yet another boundary, taking him to 69. Now the 2nd highest 10th wicket stand of all time.
Seems Root and Anderson have taken the hint from some boos from the crowd, for refusing runs, and are now getting on with it again.

Thing is, just blocking and turning down runs when they're available just stifles the game and kills England's momentum. If they really want to demoralise India, they should try to rack up a lead of 50 or so as quickly as possible and declare, or just throw the bat until one of them is out.

i dont know- just playing proper test cricket like this is and maximising there chances to score runs and take time has worked to give them a 160 partnership- this partnership could literally go on for ever!dyrewolfe wrote:alfie wrote:GSC wrote:Don't get why Root is refusing singles. Maybe - but that won't win the match for England.
And now England have the highest last-wicket partnership of all time, beating Hughes and Agar's record.
Now for god's sake get on with it, build a lead and get India batting again.

I think England should just maintain their present strategy.
Bat as long as possible, the runs will taker of themselves, and pin India further into the corner where their only hope is a draw or defeat.

India don't have time to bat England out of the game and leave enough time to be confident of taking 10 wickets, while if India get knocked over for <250 England could chase it
