Full Flap mode!!
Chaps & chapesses...probably my last post for a few days, it's my Captain's day Saturday and I'm aware that I've flipped into a strange maternal mode, it's my baby and I want the best for it!!, I want everyone involved to have the best possible day, hopefully if that happens the Charity will benefit (hope I've got that that the right way round!!).
Any current or past Captains, please feel free to chuck advice about dealing with the day. Anyone one else (i.e. Captains Day consumers) what if anything made the most memorable Captains Day you've been to?? (probably too late to change anything but more than happy to hear of any little nuggets which may help).

Possibly limit public speaking to the bare minimum.

It'll be me next year and I'm certainly planning on taking Mac's advice.
People want beer and choccy on the course (or soft drinks and energy bars for those taking it seriously!)
Have a good day and hope you enjoy it.

I played a charity event a few years ago and they had a barbecue between the 9th green and 10th tee. I thought it was a really nice touch.

Treasure hunting. Hide small gifts around the course.
Or a trivia with golf related questions. Place the questions in each hole or on the flag. Each correct answer is worth a shot. Or the best wins a prize. Or just organise it as a pub quiz.
Otherwise: putting or pitching comp. Happy Gilmore driving comp.

Monty's not playing is he? Hope he's fully clothed if he is. Actually, he'd better be fully clothed anyway. Eugh!
Like the happy Gilmore driving comp idea, might use that one myself. Quid or two in, own ball, longest on fairway wins pot (or part thereof), quid fine for missing the ball.

Re: Full Flap mode!!
Sitting here sipping a breakfast coffee and basking in the afterglow of what turned out to be great day :-) A great day that so so very nearly didn't happen. Actually took the decision to cancel on Friday after a lengthy conversation with the Met Office at around 12:30 Friday lunchtime (due to the high probability of thunderstorms & heavy rain with localised flooding. Whilst in the process of cancelling it became clear that scheduling an alternative date would be very problematic (functions booked every Saturday from now to end of September, looked at Sundays & rescheduling other events as well. By 3.00pm Friday I was one very frustrated JAS, by chance I looked at the forecast again and noticed that it had improved ever so slightly, call to the Met Office again, they said it was still more than 50-60% chance that we would get lightning at some point most likely mid afternoon. Given the logistical problems of rearranging I made the call and took the gamble to go ahead. Another round of phone calls uncancelling and...
It turned out to be a good call, yes we got some rain on and off, the greens did need squeegeeing to start with but we went ahead We did have one 20 minute period in the afternoon where we had to get everyone off due to the lightning threat but that was it. Most courses the the West of us got flooded and closed but I reckon i used up a lifetime's worth of weather luck :-)
Fabulous day, enjoyed by all and the BHF coffers are in the region of £2500 better off this morning. The most testing day of the Captaincy is now over and I'm looking forward to the rest of the year :-)

Well done JAS - glad it all went well for you! Just 30(?) miles east of you I played and we had no problems at all!
And to Kwini - wasn't Dawson's decision justified in the end?

Davie,
Most people seem to think so.
But he could easily have sent them off early in twosomes and still finished yesterday, though there would certainly have been an interruption in play.
And, even if they didn't finish Saturday, he knew the forecast for Sunday was good.
Sounds like players went to bed Friday night not knowing their tee-times; god only knows what spectators made of it.
But so long as it was OK for TV . . . .

With that sort of storm around, it's not the TV you should be worried about, it's the players
Even Coco said it was the 2nd best decision the R+A have made this year

Yes - because it got the players around safely with minimal delay
You are allowing your dislike of Dawson to cloud your otherwise good judgement - but that's for another thread
Sorry JAS!

Re: Full Flap mode!!
No problems, it was actually me that introduced "dealing with problematic weather threatening an event" into the conversation :-)
I called mine right after a bit of dithering. Dawson & and his lot probably called theirs right too. Thunderstorms are so dangerous and so fickle you just never know exactly how much you're gonna get in any given location with any degree of certainty

Re: Full Flap mode!!
Players not knowing their teetime before going to bed is a no-no. Stensons caddie had to wake up at 3 am. to check. Bradley also complained.

Re: Full Flap mode!!
Don't they have radar up there on The Wirral Davie?
Or a met man??
Any sign of incoming electrical storms means you bring players off the course, send the punters to the bars and/or merchandise tents. That storm didn't last that long, they could easily have played in the evening.
Sounds some players were quite miffed and makes a great Championship appear a bit contrived.
Still, the right result was doubtless achieved, at Royal Liverpool and JASGC.

Re: Full Flap mode!!
As I understand it the met men had it as storms coming in mid/late afternoon and contuing into the evening .. they got it half right.
I can't speak for you, other people here, or more importantly for the players themselves, but for me I prefer to see round 3 played on day 3 and round 4 played on day 4. Call me old fashioned.
Yes if they'd left things alone they may have had to come off for a couple of hours .. and then tried to finish in early evening .. and if they hadn't finished, who would have been left out there? The leaders. So they would be the ones out there early Sunday morning, trying to complete round 3. Is that fair?
The likes of Tiger who you seem to think was a beneficiary of the rearranged tee times would have completed round 3 early whereas the McIlroys and Garcia, Fowler, Johnson and the others in contention may have had a disrupted Sunday .. is that what you want?

Re: Full Flap mode!!
Being open to the vagiaries of the British summer is a little bit of what it's all about though. The Thursday Friday switch round tee times sometimes has bearing on winners (Oosty?) so there is a case to carry on as it "should" be. But, IMO it was right given the likelihood of electrical storms. End of the day, it is what it is, they made the call and stuck by it. So did JAS, then changed his mind!
Still a very, very good Open for me and sounds like a very good Captains day too.
