Think Drogba's signing is going to have a positive effect on Torres. Don't think anyone really taught Torres how to be a "classic 9", always been a roving striker type.

I think it's a bit late in Torres' career to be hoping he'll learn new skills from other strikers.
If you were bringing in Drogba to help any Chelsea striker, then surely it would be Lukaku.

I like Drogba, so I'm happy its happened. He'll be a happy backup, might be the mentor Mourinho (I guess) thinks Lukaku needs considering he appears to have problems with the lad's attitude.
And if he takes a coaching role too then its a good little plan

Being the romantic type, I wish Drogba's last touch in a Chelsea shirt was that winning penalty against Munich.
That was truly poetic.

As a player/coach its a superb signing. Can still do a job and will teach the likes of Costa and Lukaku so much
Re: 2014 Summer Transfer Window Thread
More a psychological/good feel/dressing room move than a pure on pitch one.
Reduces the loss of Cole/Lampard's experience too.
See Liverpool are set to clinch Lovren - apparently the way to improve on second is sign the majority of the 9th best teams players...

He's always been a very obviously positive dressing room figure. And he's got that experience of winning things.

£20 million for Lovren?!
Liverpool have spent a lot for not very much in return; rather like Tottenham after they sold Gareth Bale.

Re: 2014 Summer Transfer Window Thread
Southampton have made around £75 million on Shaw, Lalana and Lovren.
Tasty.
Liverpool have spunked the suarez money away, you wonder if they should have kept a bit back and if they made CL again this season gone big in the market next season.
I don't think any of their signings improve their first 11 or are nailed on 1st 11 players.

They needed the depth. The only way they have a remote chance of reaching the top 4 again is to bulk out the squad and hope that a good team carries them as far as a great player did.

Shouldn't be spending £65 million + on depth.

It's laughable. You would think Southampton were Athletico or Dortmund with the way teams (Liverpool) have been splashing out on their players, not just some team who finished mid table in the PL.

No doubt they are decent players but signing 3/11 of a team that finished 9th (arguably not including their best player) isn't going to take you places.

Lallana and Lovren were probably their two best players, with Rodriguez and Shaw next.
In many ways, this is kind of what you do. You buy players who are of the quality you need who have excelled in your league. Thats pretty much clubs like Southampton. Fergie wanted Cole and Ferdinand when they were with us.
I presume Skrtel or Agger leaves now?

Gary Cahill, Mikel Arteta, Michael Carrick, even Cabaye to PSG. You pick the players good enough, not based on who they play for

Total waste from Liverpool, there's adding depth to your squad but at the same time when you're spending the best part of £100mil you want to improve your first team, they're making the exact same mistake Tottenham did last year.

Rare but I agree with HH. Liverpool have got worse so far this window. Hard to replace Suarez quality, but they haven't tried.

And so Bebe, the second worst player ever to play for Utd, leaves. Hands down Fergie's worst signing. You can keep your Milnes, Djemba-Djembas and Klebersons.

Drogba returning to Chelsea as a player is a mistake.
He was already a shadow of his former self in the last few seasons, should've gone out on winning the CL

Djemba djemba will take some beating, he's barely remained a professional.
Bebe has gone to a big club, good luck to him.

Lallana and Lovren are both starters. They are not gonna replace Suarez, end of, but they've improved their side in the areas they can. One or two full backs wouldn't go amiss, saying that.

It's more the price than anything. I'm not denying Southampton have some good players but they are flogging £8-12m rated players for +£20m and Liverpool are happily coughing up the money.
Cahill only went for like £7m for instance.

Is it £16m? Last I heard it was £12m. Still too much but he's only 19 I guess so Arsenal probably see it as a long term investment like Shaw is with United.
It leaves Jenkinson's future at the club in doubt though unless Wenger has plans to make him a CB or something.

According to the BBC it's sixteen million.
I don't deny he has a lot of potential, but that amount is quite ridiculous for a largely unproven defender.

Re: 2014 Summer Transfer Window Thread
I think Lallana is far more consistent than Coutinho and can be trusted to play a little deeper too. I reckon they could play all three if they wanted.
The money is daft, but then that's starting to happen. Shaw at £30m, McCormack £11m. They've got the money so it's not a huge concern.

With these players that are being sold from Southampton, Okay they were some of the key players but they are getting nice amounts of money for them. Do you feel that they will be able to replace them?
I think they will but i am not sure who with.

That's very much the plan he's been looking for a young CB & Citeh wouldn't sell him Nastasic & Bilbao wouldn't let Laporte for less then his 30m release clause The fee seems to be anywhere between 7m & 16m

Exactly LD. Most of these deals for young players are future loaded. If Chambers is an Arsenal regular in five years £16 million may look cheap.

Re: 2014 Summer Transfer Window Thread
I think they are just worried about their owner's intentions.
Shaw - £30m
Lallana - £16m (£4m to B'mouth)
Chambers - £16m
Lambert - £4m
Lovren - £20m
So about £86m before anything with Schneiderlin and Rodriguez. They usually spend a decent bit of money in the window without worry about any sales, the woman in charge now will make her motives very clear this summer

Be interesting to see if he can displace Szscesny. I fear we're heading back into Almunia territory at corners with poor attempts at catch but great shot stopper.
