He and Darlow signing today and being loaned back apparently. Can't fault them for wanting a higher level, with all due respect, both have the potential for higher than Newcastle but at least they'll stand a chance of playing next year.John wrote:Fernando wrote:Newcastle being spanked 3-0 against Malaga so far.
Yeah, was quite worrying but yesterdays performance was very good vs Schalke. Cabella & Riviere scoring, looked good. Pardew thinks we can challenge the top clubs, doesn't help himself. Also being linked with Lascelles now.
Explains the Butland interest.

Unfair to make that call atm, when the window has closed then fair enough if it remains as it is but no-one knows on if any player that Utd have gone in for have turned Utd down on that basis. Whilst there's a lot of speculation on who Utd are going in for there's been no official bids that have been made public.

I think we've done well with transfers so far. A decent cb would top it all off.
People seem to think we but marquee players all the time and this is unusual for us.
We don't really buy big big names, never really have. Veron is probably the only established big name player from another league we have signed in modern times.

Disagree with this. We've signed Shaw, a very promising left back who has looked at home in his short time in the premier league. Herrera was also a good signing, bring much needed creativity and energy to the midfield. The rest has just been paper talk. The fact we're seemingly close to signing Vidal shows we haven't lost our draw. Also I didn't expect any more signings until we return from tour as Van Gaal would have wanted to see properly what he's working with before letting people go and signing players for the sake of it. He knows what he's doing. I expect a few comings and goings in the next couple of weeks.

Yes shaw is a promising Lb but you spent 30 mil on him and he is your 1st choice so he needs to hit the ground running.
You need about 3 new Defenders and a new CM in my opinion.

Long time reader. Not a very good poster. I just wanted to have my day on Sunderlands transfers.
Jack Rodwell deal I like. It's reported £10m bit the initial few is around £6.5m plus the add-ons on a 5 year deal. If and when fit he is quite a good player. I think we'll get a couple of years out of him before he moves onto a bigger club.
By all accounts Fabio Borini has agreed terms with us. Another 5 year deal. I'm not to fussed about this to be honest. Done ok last season but I still don't think he wants to come. If a bigger club came in he would of chose them. And £14m? Liverpool will be laughing all the way to the bank!
We are going to sign Vergini on loan again this time for a year. The reason it's a loan deal is because he is owned by more than one party.
A couple of names mentioned this week are Michael Dawson and Gary Hooper.

Does a loan get round the multiple owner issue? After the kerfuffel (Tevez/Mascherano wasn't it) I thought players could only play here if they were "owned" by a club in isolation.

Re: 2014 Summer Transfer Window Thread
Seems like it. I like Bony, good player but again isn't going to fill the void of Suarez. To me, its a slightly similar situation to Bale and Spurs. Yes Spurs had allot of money to spend but they brought in decent players, but no one capable of winning the game with a bit of individual brilliance that Bale gave them. See the same happening with Liverpool. If Sturridge doesn't fire, who are they relying on to dig them out of danger? CL could also take its toll as well.

No one can fill the void of Suarez, I agree we do need another striker. But Man U need about 3 players before they can start dreaming again.

Always got to get a dig in at utd i see SOF
i'm not fickle and neither is Van Gaal, despite the success of the tour he knows we need cm and at least two defenders. I'd go all out for Vidal and Hummels, sign Blind as cover for cb/lwb/cdm and if we can't get Hummels then go for Vermaelen. Blackett is one to look out for, he looks top draw and I hope he starts a few games this year.

I'm going to be honest with you, none of this looks good. You've spent upto £10m on a player who's so injury prone, it's untrue & basically your just hoping he's fit enough to play some games. Why is Poyet stating that this signing is a 'statement of intent'. There's nothing to shout about this deal, it's too risky & Rodwell has hardly proven anything in the last number of years. Your then planning on spending £14m for a player, who let's face it, doesn't want to join you. He will probably end up signing but only because nobody else is stupid enough to pay that fee. Your then linked with Dawson, who is shocking & Hooper, who let's face it, was poor at Norwich. Not looking good up at Sunderland, especially as the other signings have been Billy Jones & Jordi Gomez.

Agree, but they should have looked at signing strikers of a high quality who are (were) available, such as:
Balotelli - seemingly available
Cavani - Wants move to the prem
Mandzuckic - Before he went to atletico
Sanchez - before move to arsenal

Re: 2014 Summer Transfer Window Thread
After Suarez, Liverpool are unlikely to take a chance on another player with a questionable reputation. Besides which, Balotelli has a small fraction of Suarez's ability and triple the attitude.
Cavani - really don't see what the fuss is about him. Would cost a small fortune and wages would be immense - waste of money
Sanchhez would have been an excellent choice but he wanted to got to Arsenal so somewhat silly to imply we didn't bother trying to sign him. He was part of the Suarez deal with Barca at one point. Still, let's not allow facts to get in the way of a gripe.
You've already said Mandzukic isn't in Liverpool's mould so why the **** would we sign him?
Personally I'd love to have seen what Rodgers would have done with the disaffected version of Torres we see struggling to make his make these days. Think he may have been able to light a fire under the kid again.

I don't know, he was already on a downward curve at Liverpool before he moved and looks to have lost his pace, positioning, finishing.... frankly everything that made him the best striker in the world for around an 18 month period.

Albion have signed Australia left back Jason Davidson and also had a work permit approved for Cristian Gambia. Pretty happy with those 2, now just need another striker, 1 or 2 wingers and a centre midfielder if Yacob goes
Re: 2014 Summer Transfer Window Thread
This is why it would have been interesting to see if there was anything Rodgers could have done to get something out of him. He turned around a few under-performing players at Liverpool and as I believe Torres is the kind of player who needs an arm round his shoulders, Rodgers' man management skills may have borne fruit. The Special Juan wrote:DAVE667 wrote:

Re: 2014 Summer Transfer Window Thread
Rodgers developed younger players & who were naturally going to get stronger & better, like Sturridge, Henderson & Sterling. Torres is shot, all his attributes of old have vanished, that transformed him into a world leading striker. You can cuddle him & love him all you want, once you take away that explosion of pace after injury, like Owen found out, kills your game. BR would of struggled to get anything out of Torres, neither could Benitez really or Jose now.

They did look at Sanchez. Then he went to Arsenal. Mandzukic was sealed before Suarez left. Balotelli is unpredictable and wants massive wages. That leaves Cavani.

Reina was error prone in his first season under Rodgers and then basically said he didn't want to return to the club last season that's why he's being sold. Why Bayern want him I don't know.

I think £6.5 million upfront for Rodwell's a good deal. He's only 23 so has got plenty of time to puthen you his injury troubles behind him, and he's got plenty to prove.
£14 million for Borini looks a lot, but the market's gone made this summer. When you see the likes of McCormack going for £11 million, I can understand Liverpool wanting more for a player who did well for you last season.
Think Spurs are pretty keen to get rid of Dawson, but I don't think he'll be a great fit for you. In my opinion, your backline lacks pace, and Dawson won't help with that.

News breaking tonight it seems that Vidal has told people close to him he wants the move to utd. Apparently the chile coach has said something which indicates the move but haven't read it yet.
Di Marzio has also confirmed utd are lining up Cuadrado and are leading the race to sign him. Would be a good buy at RWB, far better than Valencia anyway.

Re: 2014 Summer Transfer Window Thread
Can understand Bayern signing Reina as back up because he's still a really good goalkeeper and similar to Neuer in that he likes the ball at his feet. Just odd because he's going to be on really high wages, currently on £100,000 grand a week at Liverpool and doesn't seem to be willing to take a significant pay cut to move, also sad that a player who should be in his prime as a goalkeeper is going to go warm the bench at Bayern.
Think he's about level with Mignolet these days, Reina had superior distribution than Mignolet but other than that last year Mignolet was as good as Reina had been the year before. Real shame as Reina was one of the world's best just a few years before that. Can understand Rodgers' logic in getting rid, on very high wages, Reina basically said last year that his Liverpool career was over despite only moving on loan and Mignolet could have 15+ years at Liverpool as number one goalkeeper giving a lot of scope for improvement and creating a long-term back five.

For me, Reina was a good goalkeeper but always had at least one howler in him a season. AAlways seemed to cost Liverpool a win here and there due to an error. Always prevented him, for me anyway, being regarded as a world class keeper. Although I'm surprised he's gone to warm the bench at Bayern.

I'd take Reina over Mignolet every day of the week, he's really nothing special and was made to look good in a poor Sunderland side.

Sky Italia who until now have always very much of the opinion that Vidal wouldn't move are the ones stating it now. The Instagram account that posted he was happy to stay with the pic of him with the Juve players has been revealed to be fake too.

Dunno, i'm starting to feel more and more confident. Now we're back on UK soil, I fully expect us to step up our chase of Vidal. Seems the hold up has been a possible issue with his knee but hearing more and more that medical staff are happy there's no long term problems there.
