Scored more goals than RVW though. He's definitely a Championship player though, he scored a heck of a heap of goals for Scunthorpe if you'll pardon my French.

Not sure if anyone's noticed but THEY DON'T GROW ON FRIGGIN TREES
Agree, but they should have looked at signing strikers of a high quality who are (were) available, such as:
Balotelli - seemingly available
Cavani - Wants move to the prem
Mandzuckic - Before he went to atletico
Sanchez - before move to arsenal
They did look at Sanchez. Then he went to Arsenal. Mandzukic was sealed before Suarez left. Balotelli is unpredictable and wants massive wages. That leaves Cavani.
That is the problem when selling a world class player you can't just go out and replace him as mentioned before they don't grown on trees. None of the players listed above are in the same class as Suarez in terms of being a threat. Not even his countryment Cavani. I just can't see Cavani leaving Paris and the French Champs for Liverpool. Sanchez and Mandzuckic are very talented footballers but simply not of the Suarez level, none of these guys really are.

Unfair to make that call atm, when the window has closed then fair enough if it remains as it is but no-one knows on if any player that Utd have gone in for have turned Utd down on that basis. Whilst there's a lot of speculation on who Utd are going in for there's been no official bids that have been made public.
That was CS's point. I think a great many United fans underestimated and didn't value what a big loss it was to not make the CL. With the amount of money United are willing to flash and able to flash along with their tradition and a big name manager you would think that by now they would be able to get a big name world class player. But they haven't been able to yet. It doesn't mean it won't happen and I think it is good to reserve judgement till the window is closed. A lot of deals get done at the end of the window. Big name players are loathe to go to clubs that aren't in the Champions League and money isn't really that big of an issue because a lot of clubs have big spending power who are in the Champions League as well. I still think United will get some quality in this window but I am sure they will not get the same results as if they had qualified for the CL.

John:
While I agree with most of what you said I do thing Dawson will be a good addition to the team - especially when you have John o'shea and wes brown who is your 1st choice centre back pairing.
Olly:
I remember we were in talks with hooper before he joined you's. I don't think he is what we are looking for - a striker that scores goals.
The borini deal is dragging. I wish Poyet would give him a deadline on when he wants his answer by. Of it goes on any longer it will outlast the DFS sale!

In the same vein though, star players aren't flocking to Liverpool either. Sanchez chose a club thats consistently in the CL over them after all. United coming back up after a down year isn't a hard sell, especially when backed with the kind of cash United have.
They aren't among the Barca, Real, or Bayerns type drawing power at the moment for sure. but I'd say they could comfortably compete amongst the second tier as long as the CL exclusion remains an anomaly rather than a trend.

Explain to me how a major drop in sponsorship revenue with Addidas + other and no Champions league money wont cause Man U sevre financial implications. Since the year previous 38% of to your revenue came from Broadcasting and 24% came from sponsorship.

Rvp - fair enough
Mata - not wanted by Chelsea, is he really a marquee name when he can't get into his international side?
Ferdinand - was a 23 year old playing for west ham
Cantona - not a marquee name/world class player when we signed him
We've always done well to get domestic based players however if people are expecting us to go out and sign big name/marquee/world class players from other leagues they are in for a surprise as we've never really done it.
In the last 10 years rvp is the only one, at a push you would say Hargreaves.

How does that impact upon this season's standings though?
The Adidas deal stipulation comes into effect from the 2015-16 season and only if they then fail to qualify for two CLs in two straight seasons. The stipulation is that they would receive 30% for those seasons and it would be restored once they got back in the CL.
Now being that the income from the deal is £75m per year so with the loss would equal £52.5m per annum, add to that the £53m shirt sponsor deal per year for Chevrolet and £15m per year from Aon for the training ground.
Even with offsetting £30m for years with no CL would mean income of £90.5m per year from three sponsors.

Big money but not a great player in my opinion.
Others may disagree.
Point is we are not at it every summer and all those big moves are domestic transfers.
I don't see why people expect us to suddentl go out and get hummels, Vidal etc

He didn't turn out to be as great as hoped but certainly at the time he was lauded with City and Real Madrid also trying to buy him.

Don't remember real wanting him, city were throwing money at every domestic player then.
I'm bias against him and hold him up as our worst ever signing.
Still don't think he was considered world class or a big marquee name at the time.

Re: 2014 Summer Transfer Window Thread
Anyway the crux of the matter is we have rarely if ever made marquee signings, the only genuine one would be veron.
We've signed some world/top class players from other teams in England and over the years we've hoovered up a lot of the better domestic players. The weat of the league somewhat stops that from happening now.
We've missed on fabregas, thiago, hazard, ronaldinho, shearer and many more whilst currently winning things.
For one reason or another we've never really attracted the glamour names so blaming lack of cl for not landing Vidal et all is stupid.

Shearer regretted not going to Utd though, didn't he? Or am I thinking of Gazza?
Is it a new knee injury or an old one? If it's an old one, it's lies. I hardly think something like that is just coming to the fore now. A new one could be troublesome but unless it's serious it shouldn't make much difference.

Not disputing that.
Just illustrating that we aren't Real Madrid buying marquee names every year and are now unable to because of no cl football.

It's the old one prior to the WC, the Chile manager stated that Vidal was playing at 30-40% at the WC due to it.

Re: 2014 Summer Transfer Window Thread
Really depends on your definition of marquee signing, but Liverpool/Chelsea/Arsenal/Newcastle etc didn't start bricking it when United signed RVN/Stam/De Gea/Fellaini/Herrera. Your rationale seems to be rather cost of a lot of money relative to the time which isn't something I'd agree with.

Re: 2014 Summer Transfer Window Thread
We never start bricking it when anyone buys anyone. Spurs bought Lamela, Paulinho, Soldado etc and nobody gave a flying f.
Its not the amount of money, its the quality of the player. De Gea was supposed to be heir apparent to Van Der Saar, one of the best goalkeepers to ever grace the premiership who took over from Barthez who took over from Schmeichel.
RVN was coming in from huge fanfare as he was caning it in the Eridivisie
Stam - same concept, massively touted as being one of the best defenders in the world. In come United.
I could do this for all of them, Mata was a massive statement of intent from United, wanted or not by Chelsea he was regarded as probably the best player Chelsea had, but just didn't fit the Mourinho blueprint.
I'm not a United fan, but to say they've not signed marquee names for a long time is ridiculous.

You don't sign marquee names from the Dutch league in this day and age. As for bricking it, its somewhat akin to if United resigned Ronaldo. He's a game changer in the title race.
Nobody looked at a 21 year old GK coming from a softer La Liga as a game changer.
Nor a couple of players who tore up a relatively weak league.

Mid 90's Eredivisie was not weak. PSV, Ajax etc were challenging for the Champions League akin to how La Liga/Bundesliga teams are now.
If you're on about signings of that magnitude - your Zidanes, Ronaldos, Bales etc then there are very few who've actually done it in the Premiership. Arsenal almost hold entire exclusivity with Ozil on that one.

Jaap Stam was widely regarded as being the best defender in the world when he signed for United.
Juan Veron was widely regarded as one of the best midfielders in Italy in its golden age for midfielders in Serie A.
But I see you have your opinion and won't be swayed so I give up.

Ent I agree, Utd haven't really bought marquee names like say Barca/Bayern and especially Real have and are doing now. Vidal at the moment is probably the first since Mata and is a genuine world class player.
SOF, Fellaini in no stretch of the imagination is a marquee signing. The fee was ridiculous and was just a disaster. Average player, nowhere near good enough for utd. I wouldn't say Lallana is anywhere near a marquee signing but he cost the same as Kroos, a definite marquee signing.

Agreed, no problem with people sticking the boot in because we had a bad season last year, it is this suggestion we constantly buy the top players in the world and now we won't be able to that baffles me.
I mean we wouldn't have fallen out of the top 4 if we regularly made big marquee signings.
