Well doesn't take a financial advisor to assess that losing £80mill (and probs the rest) in Champions League revenue and loosing money from sponsors will strain your finances?
PS I thought you Addidas kit deal was from THIS season

Re: 2014 Summer Transfer Window Thread
Fellaini was the best/second best (Baines) for Moyes during his Everton stint. He was brilliant at times, and part of a much heralded Belgium national team that was regarded as potentially being a dark-horse for the world cup. Not by a stretch the best player in his position in the world, but given the transfer fee and his performances in an Everton shirt an absolutely superb purchase on paper. If he replicated his Everton performances he'd have been an absolute steal, problem is, he didn't - but he was a major purchase.
I'm not saying that united won't now be able to attract huge names, but its silly to say they've not previously attracted some of the biggest names in the world. RVN, Veron, Mata, Stam etc - all considered absolutely class signings at the time. Stam got better, RVN tore apart the Prem, Veron was utter shyte, but he'd make any midfield comprised of mid 90's Serie A players. For the record, we're talking about players like Desailly, Boban, Zidane, Donadoni etc. He'd fit right in based on his Italian experiences.
United are still an absolute mammoth of a club, and anyone who turns down the opportunity to play for them from Barca, Real, juve etc is absolutely daft. They're still that level - Kroos is a daft sod, he'd have been exceptional in the Prem for United - your first real Scholes incarnate but he's gone for the easy life at Real where he'll play 1/3 games and sit in the top 2 in the league all year. Some players don't like the challenge of playing for a team that because of the strength of the league may not finish in the top 3/4.
Anyway, my point is, United have never struggle signing huge players, we're doing a disservice to Sir Alex by saying he wasn't able to attract top quality to the club, and that winning as much as he did resulted in mediocre players over achieving. He signed some quality, world class players (£15mil for Ronaldo which went slightly under the radar was an absolutely huge amount for his age at the time - a statement of intent to buy top quality young starlets, followed by Rooney etc.)
I say this as a Liverpool fan, you guys are still THE team to play for in the Prem, history and achievement considered. Now with Van Gaal you have a world class manager worthy of filling Sir Alex's shoes. What numpty wouldn't choose to play for him?

Big difference between being a big signing and a marquee signing.
SoF you're not taking into the extra income we'll receive from sponsorship, you're misinterpreting our finances hugely.

£15m too apparently, What a bunch of muppets if believed the papers its another 10m for Hummels seems a weird choice when they supposedly have this giant war chest
Vermaelen = injury prone & has a mistake in him more often then he should may do well in a 3 man defense though
Hummels = One of the best in the world

Jab Machine is correct to say that RVP, Mata, Veron, Van Nistelroy, or even Rooney were big buys and marquee signings at the time they were made. Everyone and their mother in world football wanted Rooney and United paid big bucks in those days and beat out a lot of big clubs for Rooney. Van Nistelroy was the best player in the dutch league and a star when he came and RVP was one of the best strikers in the world when United purchased him as a 28 year old youngster.

I know what you receiving in sponsorship, but sponsorships’ are also success based with increase payments on being in more competitions and being successful. So if your in the champions league and fighting on all fronts, you would receive more money.

Be interested to see if that's permanent or just a loan before he heads off to Madrid. Can't see you guys affording 300k a week.
Apparently Arsenal are now favorites to land Marco Reus from Dortmund if believe the German newspapers. All we'd need a DM and we'd be in with a good shout for the league there.

I keep having to explain sarcasm to you Duty. The whole idea that United develops their own young players and doesn't make big buys or marquee signings to me is a bit off the mark. Yes they develop a lot of their own stars but they aren't above plucking other teams star players once they are well into their careers and established. (ie the 28 year old youngster comment in regards to RVP)

Yeh I feel as long as wenger is there I can't see arsenal winning the league. Feel he's lost his edge and I still don't see a genuine leader out there for arsenal, something they've lacked ever since viera left.

This would be the club that struggled to find spots for the likes of Pique, Rossi and Pogba? The only youth players that break through at United now are defenders that end up at midtable sides a few years later. There's just too much money and pressure involved to take a big risk.socal1976 wrote:Yes they develop a lot of their own stars

A marquee signing is hard to define, RVP was one no doubt but then it's tricky to define Ferdinand and Rooney, both signed based on potential having excelled at an international tournament.
We do tend to sign second tier players or those with potential, signing a proven world class player for us is the exception rather than the rule.

None of them were good enough at the time so were moved on, Evans broke through as have Welbeck, Januzaj and Cleverley to the first team squad. Fletcher's been a first team player for over 10 years now while Smalling, Jones, Rafael, De Gea, Rooney and Ferdinand were all bought at a young age for their respective positions.

He's also said he expects 6 teams to fight it out for the league this year. Which 6 teams? City, Chelsea, United, Liverpool and Arsenal you would assume are 5/6. So who else? Spurs or Everton? I can't see either team coming close to actually winning the league but I expect them to be fighting for 6th/7th. I'd be interested to know who Wenger thinks it is though.

It's difficult to know what sarcasm is with you.
I would have thought "Aaron Lennon is an England regular", " Aaron Ramsey is the best midfielder in the world", and "England's win in 1966 was deserved, yet a fluke", were all sarcasm but, no, you were being serious.
How is anyone meant to know the difference?

You are so cute, like a photo of a kitten playing with a puppy. Never said Ramsey was the greatest anything of all time. But when he was healthy the best central midfielder in the division last year and probably in Europe. Rambo will make you all believers in 2015. I'd rather we just promote Blackett to the first team squad.
