Supposedly they didn't want a swap deal.
But its because Barca made a bid.

We were reportedly his favoured destination so I doubt that but I'm happy either way, would have been a waste of money.

You must be takin the piddle now or am showing my age. Stam was lauded as one of the worlds best BEFORE he signed for United.
Stop making out that your buy turds and polish them into diamonds.
You paid over £10mill pound for a CB in '98. In todays terms thats over £30mill (in terms of inflation and also the averge cost of a player rising considerably since)
Stam was 26 and had only played top level football for 3 seasons.
Anelka skinned him in the charity shield and everyone thought he was a donkey.
In 98 nesta, costacurta, thuram, desailly, canavaro amongst many others were playing. Jaap wasn't considered one of the best centre halfs in the world.
Anyway even if he was that is one example 16 years ago- fantastic, well done.
WTF you going on about? I couldn't give one about Manure signings or whatever.
But to suggest that Stam wasn't one the worlds best because Anelka skinned him in the Charity Sheild then your an idiot (Like no World Class CB ever gets skinned?). Stam was the Dutch player of the year (a team that had Bergkamp, Overmars (who had a great seasons 97/98), de Boers, Davids, Seedorf etc) and the Dutch leagues player of the year in 97 before he went to yourselfs. But he wasn't lauded and was unknown
Thuram was a RB, Canavaro was still a pup. Desailly was a career DMC who converted to CB when he went to Chelsea, definately not one of the worlds best. Nesta there is up with him out of your suggestions but apart from that?

That's fine we signed the best defender in the world once 16 years ago so that's evidence not being in the cl this year is stopping us signing the best players In the world.
Great stuff.

It is painfully obvious you do not get this, so I'm going to leave it - it is a very simple concept.

Yeah but players know via the murky world of agents and tapping up who's interested.
I presume he'd have wanted to be part if pre season and made efforts to get the move completed had he really wanted to join us.

canavaro was a pup at 25?! and desailly was easily one of the best defenders around and was a major part in france winning the world cup, again more nonsense. letting your hate of united get in the way here of the actual truth methinks

anybody know who arsene wanted as part of the swap deal? im not too fussed about missing out on him, isnt very good.
will probably look good for barca though, dont need to do much defending there. passing is one of the biggest attributes for a barca defender

Rumours were Smalling.
Mathieu and Vermaelen at centre half for Barca next year. What's that £45 million to not improve your defence?

Ah yes, Sissoko, thats the one I was thinking of.
Cheers.
Cant say I've heard of Cissokho.
I told you, he played for Liverpool last year on loan. He's seriously awful, one of the worst players I've seen play for the club.

To be fair, will they start? Pique is guaranteed a starting place and although Mascherano has been promised a chance at central midfield, I can't see him ousting Busquets so think he'll drop back into centre back and he's better than Vermaelen.

He wanted Chris Smalling
Can't decided which im happier about not getting Smalling or getting 15m for an injury prone player with 1 year left on contract
Won't be 1st choice there either unless one of Pique & Mascherano gets sold

Re: 2014 Summer Transfer Window Thread
Also I wonder what this means for Daniel Agger? He was probably going to move to Barcelona, but now Vermaelen is going instead he's sort of stuck at Liverpool. He would be actually very good for United, he's definitely better than Vermaelen, left-footed and used to a three man defence but no way will Liverpool sell their vice-captain to United.
Napoli I imagine will be interested, possibly Manchester City if they can't complete the Mangala deal, other than that he may end up being stuck.

ha ha pot kettle black, your accusing me of using the 2000's as a weak period then name loads of players from the 80's and early 90's which was a strong period. most you names were at least ten years away from when stap won it. majority of mine were within that period

I don't doubt he was a class player (can't believe in getting back into this), just disagree he was considered a marquee signing or considered the best defender in the world.
Even if he was it was 16 years ago, the original point still stands.

Yer because Man U bought him and all of a sudden he improved drastically
Just maybe he was provided with a bigger platform to showcase his abilities in the most marketed league the world and got the accolades’ he was due?

Both Vermaelen and Mathieu cost £15 million (Mathieu £15.8m if you want to be pedantic). Barcelona can afford to spend that much on back ups, considering they previously only had two natural centre backs in Pique and Bartra.

The actual league wasn't at such but the bigs guns like Ajax and PSV were able to attract likes of Romario and THE Ronaldo and both had quality teams.

Nope. That fact he was ALREADY world class player in his position (like Stam), which is my original point.
nonsense, suarez was nowhere near as good when he first joined than he has been for the last couple of seasons. had ability yes but no one was putting him in the world class category for the first two seasons

Please.....................stop being so fickle. He was a player just coming into his pomp.
So if Suarez didn't come to Liverpool he wouldn't still become world class?
As I said, more exposure means more people take notice.

so suarez was the same player at ajax that he has been at liverpool for the last couple of seasons?! why wasnt the likes of barca sniffing after him then instead of a 7th place liverpool team

Perhaps the fact that Barca simply didn't need Suarez as they were pretty dominant already had something to do with it. However a drop in Messi's form, the strengthening of Real Madrid's squad and the emergence of Athletico may have had something to do with them signing him now.

Big clubs were after him, including Manchester United, but a lot went cold when he was involved in his first biting incident. Liverpool decided to take the risk.

Re: 2014 Summer Transfer Window Thread
i dont ever remember us being linked with him, and i said many club likes barca not just barca. there were loads of bigger clubs than a pretty poor liverpool at the time. im not having that they were put off by the biting incident if after multiple other offences since then barca are willing to spend millions more to get him. why would it put them off first time but not after proving he's a lost cause in terms of his temperament
unless of course he's improved and now they see him worth the risk

Also the fact that Suarez was a guy who scored a load of goals in a relatively poor league then as opposed to a guy who ripped up one of the strongest leagues in Europe now. Let us not forget Liverpool paid more for Carroll than Suarez, he was hardly a superstar coming from Ajax.
