Yeah of course he has improved, I wasn't doubting that, just pointing out that Suarez was actually being looked at by bigger clubs than Liverpool. At the time he wasn't worth the risk as he hadn't proved himself in any other league than the Dutch one.

Thats the thing though isn't it. Coming out of a substandard league he was looked at as a big signing, but not a marquee one because he wasn't facing great opposition. Now hes proven himself at the (second) highest level hes seen as a marquee signing for Barca.Crimey wrote:compelling and rich wrote:i dont ever remember us being linked with him, and i said many club likes barca not just barca. there were loads of bigger clubs than a pretty poor liverpool at the time. im not having that they were put off by the biting incident if after multiple other offences since then barca are willing to spend millions more to get him. why would it put them off first time but not after proving he's a lost cause in terms of his temperament

well thats one paper, one which i dont read so unsurprising that i hadnt seen the link. certainly dont remember anything more than substantial than paper talk
sof point was that he had not improved, that you signed a already world class player like we did when we signed stam. thats where all this came from

I said he was coming into his pomp naturally. It was not like Liverpool turned him into the player he is now. They gave him the platform

I'm in two minds over the Vermaelen deal. £15 million is great price for a player who's unlikely to improve and has one year on his contract. I'd rather Wenger had his replacement already at the club. Hopefully he's got a deal up is sleeve, or else we're two injuries away from having a centre back pairing of Chambers and Miguel.

Dunno where I got £30 million for Mathieu from - probably his age
Still a lot of cash even if they can afford it.

I see this conversation has taken an even more ludicrous direction RE Suarez.
Some people's logic is truly baffling.
The biting bit made me chuckle, Barca have just splashed circa £70 million on him after his highest profile bite and biggest ban - you couldn't make it up.

They were sniffing around Ben Arfa on loan, if that Atsu deal failed. As for Ben Arfa, stripped of his shirt number by De Jong & we're now just offering HBA + cash for Lacazette.

Do you remember the time when Tottenham made the marquee signing of the world class Scott Parker, voted english player of the season so must have been right up there.

I was thinking that. Not sure what it's going to do for West Ham's new expansive style, That's assuming Andy Carroll gets fit!

Proves the point though doesn't it, these awards don't always mean a lot, yes Stam was a gifted defender but buying anybody from the dutch league post Van Gaals Ajax was risky but our main signing that year was Yorke. Very rarely do football fans get excited about signing a defender and Stam was no different, he might well have been world class at the time but until you excel in a major league you can never be sure.

What point, Parker was sandwiched between Suarez, Bale, Van Persie, Rooney, Gerrard, C.Ronald and Henry for winners of the award. I would say everyone of them is world class wouldnt you? So your arguement is based on one anomaly???

AFTER he proved himself in the Premier League and scored two goals at the World Cup when less then half fit. Also a much more marketable player than he was then. I do think he improved massively at Liverpool, but I definitely think the biting incident at Ajax made him less viable as a purchase for big clubs.
The same in that if Suarez had bit Ivanovic at the end of his first full season at the club, Liverpool might have sold him straight away, but because it happened after he proved himself, he was worth it.

He is a better player now, genuinely world class and proven at the top level. His transfer history has nothing to do with biting.

I'm saying that bigger clubs than Liverpool were initially put off Suarez when his first biting incident occurred because he wasn't proven in the same way he is now. I think had he not been involved in the first biting incident he may well have moved to a bigger club rather than Liverpool.

I doubt it - his profile as a biter is higher than ever now and he has a big ban, yet Barca have stumped up a huge amount of money for him, because of what he can do on the pitch.
He's genuine world class now, before he wasn't.

I agree with the second part, I do think he's developed as a player, but believe it could have happened at other clubs. It just wasn't worth the risk signing him at the time, now it is.
Liverpool were more desperate for a top class player at the same and willing to take a chance on him, Barcelona signing him now know it isn't even taking a chance, he's a world class player.

It's riskier now.
Since his move he has had 2 big bans for biting and one for racist abuse, it's a lot more money now.
All about what he can do on the pitch his transfers, he can do more now.

Well after the Vermaelen news today I expect utd to sign Daley Blind, especially after his manager said he expects him to leave. Won't cost allot, covers 3 positions and is a good player. I also hope we can finally sign Vidal by early next week. Seems the only thing holding up the deal is us wanting him to have the medical first and then agreeing a fee, something i've read Juve are happy to do.

Yeh I always wanted Blind and i'll be surprised, especially after we didn't even enquire for De Vrij that we don't buy Blind.
On Vidal, what seemed to me at first like complete fantasy seems to be on the verge of becoming reality, just feel the fact utd now are choosing not to comment, just like they did when moyes was on the verge of the sack maybe just means there's something going on behind the scenes. We'll see.

two good signings for Southmapton. Spending their money wisely. Forster signing is very good, if your new attacking signings don't come off at least you know you have a quality keeper between the sticks.

I think we saw enough of him in the champions league to know he's up to the task and Southampton probably won't be under that sort of bombardment if their new signings gel.

Tottenham close to signing Yedlin, when as a club will they realise how to operate in the transfer market, they buy so many players who aren't good enough for the aspirations of the club.

Looked promising at the world cup and is a player in the mould of Walker and will obviously be his back up, makes sense and only costs 2.5m. Time will tell whether he will make the grade in the prem but there's no doubt he's a decent player, only 21 as well.

He had a good engine that was about it from memory, had zero defensive awareness and was generally poor when you ignore the amount of running he did.

Re: 2014 Summer Transfer Window Thread
Only 21, not sure what your expecting really. Good engine & pace, decent delivery. Defensive positioning & awareness is something he will improve upon & learn at a top club. Naughton/Rose are shocking, so for £2.5m, it's a risk worth taking on another full back. Should also raise Walker's game, given added competition.
Not sure about Southampton spending near £14m on Rojo, when Bertrand has already signed on loan. Think there are other areas that need attention first.

Be interesting to see him a bit more exposed against half decent sides.
He's either been sitting with a cup of tea doing nothing in the spl or being bombarded with 9 defenders in the box in the cl.

Lascelles and Darlow sold to Newcastle.
Sad to see them go, could and perhaps should have got more, but a different complexion with Assombalonga, Antonio and those 2 back this season
