Macho Man for Hall of Fame
First topic message reminder :
I know this has probably been discussed before, but what with Randy's passing, it makes it even more signifcant. We all know that Vince had a problem with Randy, for whatever reasons, which has probably stopped Randy getting HOF.
I am thinking though that next Wrestlemania, the Rock will probably get HOF in Miami. If that's the case, he would get "star billing" (like HBK got this year). So if they give to Randy it next year, it will give him the HOF credit but not make it such a huge occasion as that would belong to the Rock.
I am just thinking that would suit us as fans, and Vince as an enemy of the Macho Man.

Re: Macho Man for Hall of Fame
Every Government talks about bringing back morality, morals, law and order etc... it is just political rhetoric. Thatcher's Government was one of the most socially liberal that there has ever been. End of censorship etc.
Bringing back child labour? Absolute rubbish! Plus, as I pointed out, spending increased each year in real terms during her Government - you can hardly say that she was reigning back spending.
Society is a rather antiquated term and was at the time - remember that the baby boomer generation were still dealing with the growing pains of moving from a WWII country to one dominated by people who knew nothing of "Old Britain".
Privatisation was the right thing for the UK... what went wrong was that poor deals were done by politicians as they aren't business people. Then again a) this wasn't Thatcher's fault as you can only micro manage so far b) many Governments have concluded poor deals (PFI being a classic example).
Corruption could apply to Labour's last Government as it could to many other Governments, again it is hardly a stick that you can use to beat Thatcher alone.

Re: Macho Man for Hall of Fame
That quote by Thatcher on society is often taken out of context. Here is (I think) the full quote:
"They're casting their problem on society. And, you know, there is no such thing as society. There are individual men and women, and there are families. And no government can do anything except through people, and people must look to themselves first. It's our duty to look after ourselves and then, also to look after our neighbour. People have got the entitlements too much in mind, without the obligations, because there is no such thing as an entitlement unless someone has first met an obligation"
I see that more as a critique on people who expect the Government to do everything for them, without doing something in return.

I think there is a major difference in opinion from people who lived through Thatcher and people who have been educated on her, what did Randy Savage do though to deserve this

Re: Macho Man for Hall of Fame
gaffer - I fully accept that I didn't live through the Thatcher years and nor do I live in an area of the country that suffered as a result of the closure of factories and industry etc. I do, though, still feel that the changes that she made were for the greater long term good of the country.
Of course not every policy was right or correct in the long term, though I admire the fact that she was prepared to do unpopular things as she felt they were the best thing for the country.
I don't believe that any modern politicians (on either side) would be prepared to act in such a way. Blair / Brown were notorious for offer freebies close to elections while Cameron has his own personal Lib Dem shield in play.
Anyway, I will not discuss the matter further as I accept it is significantly divulging from the topic at hand. Though if anyone does wish to discuss right wing UK politics with me feel free to send a message!

Josh I think peoples views on Thatcher really depend on what side of the fence they're on, the rich got richer and the poor got poorer, I would never expect a beneficary to have anything other than positives to say, while the vast majority, the poorer people will always hold her in complete contempt

The move in the UK economy in the past 25 years from manufacturing to services has directly led to many traditionally working class people moving from blue collar jobs to white collar, management ones. It was the elevation of the working class into the middle class.
Many of the people who have lost jobs and not recovered are ones who live in areas that were heavily dependant on traditional industry. But instead of remaining in areas without employment and whining about it they should have moved to an area with employment.
I live in one of the most socially deprived areas of the country. If I didn't have a job I would move to an area with better employment opportunities.

Many couldn't move simply because they couldn't afford to move and its that blasè attitude to their situation that caused such resentment to tn Thatcher and her croanies

Re: Macho Man for Hall of Fame
It isn't about having a blase attitude - just about thinking that people should work for what they earn and not rely on handouts from the state. There are many training programmes and courses available to help people retrain and support programmes to help propel people back into work.
But the problem is that people are often better off out of work than in work, which is hardly the greatest advert for a welfare state to create a dependancy on it.
While many may feel that the 80's Tory regime were wrong in the way they acted I tend to think that the dependency on the state that the previous Government created is far worse for people.

LOL. I haven't seen it yet. I didn't have a clue, but I was actually thinking it was a gimmick.
What was the lyrics to that one? Is that the "Nobody said it was easy..." one?

Just googled it.
Interesting choice if he chose it for its lyrical content. Not so interesting if he just picked it because its tunefully melancholic.

Nobody said it was easy,
nobody said it would be so hard,
take me back to the start
Cant picture Vinny being a Coldplay fan

Re: Macho Man for Hall of Fame
The Scientist lyrics:
Come up to meet you, tell you I'm sorry
You don't know how lovely you are
I had to find you
Tell you I need you
Tell you I set you apart
Tell me your secrets
And ask me your questions
Oh, lets go back to the start
Running in circles
Coming up tails
Heads on a science apart.
Nobody said it was easy
It's such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be this hard
Oh, take me back to the start.
I was just guessing
At numbers and figures
Pulling the puzzles apart
Questions of science
Science and progress
Do not speak as loud as my heart
Tell me you love me
Come back and haunt me
Oh, and I rush to the start
Running in circles
Chasing our tails
Coming back as we are
Nobody said it was easy
Oh it's such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be so hard
I'm going back to the start
Re: Macho Man for Hall of Fame
Co-incidence? The good guy in me wants to believe it was chosen specificly, wouldn't bet on it tho

Re: Macho Man for Hall of Fame
Suppose it's better than them playing this:
Honey it's getting close to midnight
And all the myths are still in town
True love and lipstick on your linen
Bite the pillow, make no sound
If there's some living to be done
Before your life becomes your tomb
You'd better know I'm the one
Unchain your back door, invite me around
Bring your daughter, bring your daughter to the slaughter
Let her go, let her go, let her go
Bring your daughter, bring your daughter to the slaughter
Let her go, let her go, let her go
Let her go, yeah!
Honey it's getting close to daybreak
The Sun is creeping in the sky
No patent remedies for heartache
Just empty words and humble pie
So get down on your knees Honey
Assume an attitude
You just pray that I'll be waiting
'Cause you know, you know I'm coming soon
Bring your daughter, bring your daughter to the slaughter
Let her go, let her go, let her go
Bring your daughter, bring your daughter to the slaughter
Let her go, let her go, let her go
So pick up your foolish pride, no going back
Nowhere, no way, no place to hide, let her go
Bring in your daughter
Bring in your daughter
Bring in your daughter
Bring in your daughter
Bring in your daughter
Bring in your daughter
To the slaughter
Bring in your daughter
Fetch your daughter
Bring in your daughter
Fetch your daughter
Bring in your daughter
Fetch your daughter
To the slaughter
Bring your daughter, bring your daughter to the slaughter
Let her go, let her go, let her go
Bring your daughter, bring your daughter to the slaughter
Let her go, let her go, let her go
Bring your daughter, bring your daughter to the slaughter
Let her go, let her go, let her go
Let her go, let her go, let her go
I'm coming to get you now!
