Re: 2014 Rogers Cup!
Are we seeing a new Cilic these days? He might not be winning these matches but he's giving the big boys much more of a challenge than he used to (here V Federer, Wimbledon against Djokovic).
Lopez is indeed having a very impressive season LF. If only he'd have won Queens... Good player yes but would I class him as an underachiever? If he had a better backhand than yes, he'd be top 10 material.

Re: 2014 Rogers Cup!
IC, you are right, no one takes Toronto seriously, I mean a tournament that has one of its main sponsors a wool named Toilet Paper, can not be taken seriously, unless Canadians use a special wool kind, for the jobinvisiblecoolers wrote:This has been the problem of late, nobody takes Toronto or for that sake Rogers Masters seriously, last few years all big name were absent [Federer, Nadal and Murray withdrawing in the mid tournament] barring Djokovic and he was fighting the battle alone to restore the Canadian cup pride, and we booed him who would forget the Novak vs crazy fan battle in Rogers masters, may be he decided he is not gonna show any interest either.
Goodness sake I booked a QF tickets for the night session tomorrow hoping to watch Fed in action, and I hope he makes it.

Yes we are certainly seeing a Cilic revival, and there is a steely edge to him once again. I put that down very much to the work he will have been doing under big Goran since late 2013. If he carries on like this, there's no reason he can't make top ten once again. It was only Federer's vast experience that eventually carried the day (just !) - lots of others would have fallen.
The wasted BP's mentioned by laverfan have indeed become something of an unwelcome pattern this past year or so. Just one out of TEN converted in this match (although it was the most crucial of all at 4-4 in the decider). But I guess time does inevitably play a part. So many of the elite guys fade in different ways with age, but it's very often the mental side that goes more than the purely physical. With the likes of Mac and Sampras, the quality of ball-striking remained super-high in their dotage - you can see that on the senior tour, or the stuff Sampras produced in a few exhos long after he had quit the Tour. And so it is I feel with Federer - where his tennis overall is still good enough to cope with an assault from many, many younger players - but his skill in closing out matches in a way that once came naturally is clearly not what it was.
Meanwhile lots of upsets before the QF's have left an interesting field to battle it out for the title. I'd say Dimitrov and home-favourite Raonic have as good a chance as any (but would much prefer a Dimi win .....)

I don't remember saying that, but then again I'm too "drunk" to know.

Re: 2014 Rogers Cup!
Interesting set of QFs. I think Dimitrov will have enough to get by Anderson and Fed will expect to continue his dominant H2H versus Ferrer. The other two matches look more possible upsets.
If the favourites do all win, the generational clashes in the SF should be good.

Good start by both, especially Jo on serve. It might be one of these matches where there's 2 or fewer breaks.

Bad error from Jo on BP and Murray closes it out. 2-2.

Jo's thundering these serves down. Murray carves out a BP but it's saved and we're on serve.

It's taped so there might be something wrong with him for a change!!
Tsonga's guaranteed himself a TB at least and is favourite to take it the way he's been serving.

225km/h ace from Tsonga!! (That's 139.8mph)

Whoa! If Tsonga wins this match I hope he wins the whole thing. Murray playing well, Tsonga hitting serves from another planet (and a couple of your run-of-the-mill 100mph winners). Jo takes the first on a TB (7-5). 1 good shot was the difference.

Re: 2014 Rogers Cup!
This has got 2 or 3 TBs written all over it. Tsonga's serve is taking care of his service games, Murray's groundstrokes are doing the business on his serve.

Re: 2014 Rogers Cup!
Tsonga has one service game where he doesn't paint the lines and Murray's all over it like Stan and a buffet table. Murray leads *3-1.

Bloody brilliant hold by Murray there from 15-40 down and he leads 5-4*.

Better fight but looks a tad rusty to me but take nothing away from Tsonga though as he is playing some great stuff and is looking mentally strong for once.

Tsonga goes mental walkabouts and Murray nips in to take the second set.

Re: 2014 Rogers Cup!
How quickly things turn!! You were saying Craig? Tsonga can't hit a first serve, hits a DF, Murray hits a superb return and we're all square. Murray might just run away with this.

Re: 2014 Rogers Cup!
That point at 40-15, 4-4 in the 2nd set has turned this match on its head. Tsonga wins that, he serves for it and 9/10 times wins it. As it happens, Murray played his point of the year and then goes on a charge. Jo's mentally gone now and it could get very ugly indeed for him.

Since Andy is still behaving like a spoiled brat, I have decided to support Tsonga on this match, so Go Tsonga Goooo
Andy needs a Lendl type, to spank him with a cane and inject some discipline.

There's a video on YouTube of him telling someone to shut up. It might be your favourite player Djokovic.

Tsonga's won 5 games in a row. Murray might get "bagelled" here if he's not careful. I don't know what's caused this turnaround.

Re: 2014 Rogers Cup!
Murray suffering from not going for the jugular. If he loses this match now as looks a good bet then he can only blame himself. Too inconsistent today and chucking away a winning lead is disappointing. A great chance to gobble up much-needed big ranking points and a confidence-boosting win chucked away.

Re: 2014 Rogers Cup!
The only thing Andy can take from this is a few more ranking points earned. Apart from that he has to look to sharpen up in various areas in the run up to the final slam of the season. And as I type is this another Tsonga implosion?? Hope not as Tsonga merits the win.

Tsonga throwing aces like candies.
And a DF on MP and wastes 3 MPs.
And wins it, great match. Andy needs a brain massage.

Also, well done to LF for calling it. Gasquet's withdrawl affected that match IMO - beating him would have helped Murray today.
