Too many films being made and not enough writers directing them !!

Watched The Fog remake the other day...............It was worse than awful......Sloppy directing from a guy who doesn't understand what makes a scare....The killers are shown straight away...Which takes away the unknown quantity and breeds familiarity...........Everything wrong...

Obviously the director didn't either give a toss or understand the material..If he doesn't why should the actors ???....Look at the difference between Halloween and Halloween 5...One is a writer's labor of love.....The other a director who's been brought in to direct....Jeez he even unmasked Michael Myers !!..........

So many films are being made these days that some Directors are going from one project to the next in many cases haggling a third of the way through a current picture...

Michael Crichton wrote Coma...then directed.......It's excellent...Same with his Westworld!!!...Carpenter wrote THe Fog and Halloween they are excellent....Argento wrote all his early stuff.....excellent..

Why because they are into the stuff and see a VISION !!............They want to see what they wrote on screen..

Writers should direct more.... Even If it means getting help in the direction... because they care enough to write it in the first place..

Agree with you that "directors for hire" can be a problem and don't demonstrate enough love for the screenplay or the source material, but think there are plenty of examples of writers making bad films. Stephen King directed Maximum Overdrive and also helped produce his version of The Shining. Both of those were rubbish.

Maximum overdrive was crap....Didn't like the first Shining with Kubrick....

Another great director who developed scripts and worked on things he was into !!
