First topic message reminder :
such a shame Strootman got injured before the world cup. Think he'd be at the club otherwise. He should have been here last summer along with thiago but we ballsed it up and ended up with fellaini.

Jones has done well despite the rest and the fact united have been playing 3 defenders.
I cant say the same for any other united player

Phil "turnip face" Jones has to be the most comical defender his club have bought.Soldier_Of_Fortune wrote:Ent wrote:Lovren has been all over the place in every game he has played this season.
Wouldn't go that far but he's not been at his best.
Still better then any Man U defender.

I think Phil Jones was a player stuck between DMC and DC but Fergie decided he will be a DC when he was probably a better DMC.
He doesn't posses the greatest positioning or anticipation finds himself going to ground far too often.

Re: We Go Again! The 2014/15 Premier League Thread
It's weird to think that it was essentially a fight between Liverpool and Manchester United for Phil Jones and Jordan Henderson and Liverpool "lost" so ended up signing Henderson for a similar price as to what United paid for Jones.
Then for at least a year, maybe 18 months it seemed clear that the real winner was Manchester United but now that is definitely not the case.
I actually think Jones should have been a CB from the start but by having him fill holes he struggles there now. Was never good enough to be a DMC and probably not quite fast or attacking enough to be a RB. I do think he is a player that may suit the 3 man defence as the wide right centre back.

I put my neck on the line in the predictions thread and stated I thought Jones would be the guy who came good this year and I'm standing by that as he's been Utd's best player so far this season (yes I know that's like saying which is the nicest smelling turd?).

I'm not going to base an opinion on Rojo until he plays but Lovren thus far has been pathetically bad so not a chance would I want him at my club. At least with Rojo we've bought an international class defender with european experience.

yes but has he even played a game in the last 3 years- I seriously can only remember a few for QPR.
If you are still playing we can at least assess them
He has come on board to do more than play as he knows the club well(well thats my guess)- not sure if he played under warnock though- they may have just missed each other

"Pathetically bad"...
Really? He was in almost every Team of the Week for the Premier League that I saw for last week. He had a tough time against Manchester City, but most defenders do. At Southampton and for 80 minutes of the Spurs game he was rock solid.

I'll say one thing in Welbeck's defence - he's a big game player, a trait few current Arsenal players have. He showed, in both legs against Real, that he can keep a cool head and actually finish.

The amount of times he was caught out of position against Spurs was shocking. Specifically remember the Chadli chance where he just randomly rushed out and left a huge gap. He was lucky it was Chadli and not someone any good running through (he did that against Citeh as well)

That's a fair reflection of how bad he was against both Southampton and City isn't it, Jones is on 8.02 on that site so he must have been spell binding.

Didn't think he was bad at Southampton at all, and not sure he was dreadful at City either.

Apart from the fact that it's mentioned multiple times every time Liverpool play and basically every day of the transfer window, then yeah it gets overlooked.
He played relatively good in his first ever game for the club against Southampton, don't think the goal can be attributed to him, neither can the last minute chance and other than that Southampton didn't create any chances.
Against City he was not as good but still wouldn't class his performance as poor.
If those are poor performances, I don't know what you would class actually bad performances as.

You're a typical Liverpool fan though Crimey, you all have an inability to see things as they actually are, his positioning has been all over the place and it's affected the rest of the defence.

I think Moreno was definitely to blame for the first goal as well, he should be clearing that, Lovren couldn't have done much more than he did.

Or maybe I don't exaggerate things? I haven't said he performed excellently, just that "pathetically bad" is ridiculous. "Pathetically bad" should be reserved for truly awful performances, which he definitely hasn't had.

It was his positioning that allowed Silva to make the run in behind in the first place which led to the chaos that ensued afterwards. Moreno's was an individual error but it was his positioning that led to the goal.
I do like Lovren however. I don't know whether he was poor positioning last season for southampton as well but he has good pace and a good tackle in that he can, just about, make up for positioning errors. However, against top sides he'll get punished. If Spurs had a quality striker, may have been a different game last week. Wins a win though and all if's and but's.

Being fair to Crimey, I've not see any post where he 'overhypes' Liverpool players but I have seen him defend them, especially when he comes accross comments such as 'Lovren thus far has been pathetically bad'. From a touchy Man U supporter who was nearly crying when I laughed at there pathetic perfomance against Swansea.

Re: We Go Again! The 2014/15 Premier League Thread
GSC, you seriously need to get a grip over the fact that perhaps I don't see Andy Carroll as awfully as you see him. I'm not the only one and it's not because he played for Liverpool, it's perhaps because over the past three years he's never been fit enough long enough for him to be judged as harshly as you do.
I think to describe Lovren as "pathetically bad" he would have had to have been seriously awful, he'd have had to have cost wins, been at fault for several goals and made the team worse. You've got to remember he is being introduced to a Liverpool defence which was already very leaky, and I think already there are signs that he has improved it.
I'm not sure how that can be seen as overhyping. Also my original point is that had Manchester United signed Lovren, albeit for his inflated price, that it would have improved their defence which is completely true.

TBF signing pretty much any defender would have improved our defence as we got rid of 3/4 of our long established back four in the summer.
For the whole jumping on Lovren's back with comments the same can easily be said regarding Rojo, the lad has not even stepped on the pitch yet and there's the whole Lovren>Rojo thing going on, how on earth can that be judged yet? And then get back comments such as he's not got a work permit or that he was linked to Southampton because that obviously has bearing on how decent a defender he is?

I haven't mentioned Lovren. My point was the question was asked what defenders were available that could have improved United's defence and I suggested Lovren, with the caveats that he was too expensive and might have been moving for Champions League football.

I wouldn't expect anything different from SoF, a typical Liverpool fan getting a bit too excited because his team are now slightly less crap than they have been for years. He seems more concerned with the failure of Man United than he is with his own team.
