I like Paddy Wallace. I also like Fergus McFadden. But which is better? There's only one way to find out. FIIIGGGHHHTT!

Nah Glas. That was Dinny Leamy. Same disillusioned story. (See Paddy Wallace).

In all seriousness, I just want to see Ireland actually make it to a RWC SF. Those 2 will hinder it. Not help it. Just my humble, (divorced from all reality) - opinion.

The truth is we get hung up on individual players too much. Leamy, Wallace, Jennings and McFadden are all competent. None of them will leave you down. As three of them play on the weekend and there are a number of warmups (too many in my view) the decision may yet be taken out of Kidney's hands. Gibbo! Believe!

With Mcfadden, we dont need a 3rd outhalf
Well either we do need a third outhalf or we don't. A player who has never played the position at professional level doesn't change that either way.
Gibson wrote:a much better all-round player
Again, I question the truth of that in real terms. I think he WILL be a much, much better inside centre than Wallace. But he will take time to reach that level. Wallace, on the other hand, has performed at that level consistently. A RWC is not the right time to introduce him. Renewal? If international rugby is a four-year cycle this is the last time we should be talking about renewal. Renewal is what happens immediately after World Cups not immediately before them. The players in the squad have been working towards this for three years.
I often wonder about fans. I mean, you're a manager of a small software start-up. You spend three years putting together your team, getting the people you want getting rid of the ones you don't. You land a BIG contract, a contract that will make or break your firm. Your whole career. You get a CV from a kid just out of college, who could be a genius. He's absolutely brilliant, interviews well but has zero experience on his CV. The slot he would be best suited for is already filled however- by a very experienced, competent individual who fits in well with the dynamic of the rest of the group.
I don't think you'd find an employer who would sack the guy they've spent three years integrating into their team for a talented prospect who could sink just as easily as swim. With everything at stake, it would be a reckless move to get rid of a guy you KNOW will do well and make a big net contribution.
Now Kidney has been preparing for this World Cup for three years, building towards it, building his squad. He's capped all the players he wants to look at- he's given out a lot of caps and now, as we reach the final months, he knows his squad. At the weekend, Fergus McFadden will make his first ever appearance at inside centre in a game of genuine importance. A little too late?
I hate the way you say 'Kidney factor' like it's a bad thing. I think our coach not ripping up the plans he's spent three years laying on the back of a late surge from an outsider is a good thing. Otherwise we'd have a Lievremont situation.
You honestly think Wallace will hinder our WC campaign? Seriously?
Come on man. He's no more likely to hinder than D'Arcy or McFadden.

I would refer you to the post I just made. It upsets me when you suggest I'm being illogical. My argument is highly logical. The personal jibes can and should be left out of it.
I was just referring to your attitude when it comes down to getting an accurate rating of any young player. You always confuse potential with present ability. Potential takes time to realise. It doesn't happen over night.

Right you two, would you really say D'Arcy is a better player than Wallace or McFadden. I think D'Arcy's most at risk. Any drop of form for him and he's out as he won't have repaid the faith.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
D'Arcy is guaranteed a place. Cast iron. I think Wallace is as well in truth, they'll both go. But it would be a massively ballsy move to drop D'Arcy.
The D'Arcy/O'Driscoll partnership is the safety blanket for Irish coaches and we've seen that it can still be a scintillating combo. It's not that i think D'Arcy is a better player than either- it's that he's one part of the best midfield combination we have. You may not like Tonic very much, but if you're going to bring Gin it might be useful.
But D'Arcys Six Nations (and Fitzgeralds) reminds me of O'Gara in 2007. O'Sullivan decided O'Gara would be first choice and backed him regardless of form in that 6N. He was given every minute.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Glas,
I hope it does. It will take a cataclysmic shift for Kidney, to change tack at this stage. His die is cast. In a few key places, it has been injury age & disablity, that have made his "decisions" for him. That is the real problem here. Not the individuals mentioned. Im not having a go at them. They have served us well. He still considering taking Hayes, Horan and Wallace to a WC. Very concerning.
Just want my country to do something they have never done before. I have seen far too many political dirt-trackers spoil the party over the years.
Kidney is old-school. We need someone (outside Ireland) - with the vision to take us to the next level. Hopefully he will return home, to "save" Munster when it all finishes.
Notch,
We have run over this ground many times before together. I dont agree with you. I was not being personal. I was subtly easing you towards not being personal. Realism is not my game? If you check my History - I have been spot on. OK. I'll leave it. For now.
Believe.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
You shouldn't accuse someone of not making a logical argument and then failing to address their points when they are well made. Did you even read my other post?
I made a perfectly good humoured, tounge in cheek remark which you seem to have taken in away it wasn't intended. But it's true isn't it? You get carried away with the young guys. You have not much realism with where they are relative to where they will be. You let your optimism become the enemy of your judgement.
It's not a failing really. It's understandable. But there's no need to turn things sour because we have a difference of opinion.
The only reason I make these arguments is I want Ireland to do as well as possible and there's plenty of fans out there who seem to be lining to tear strips off Declan Kidney for not sabotaging our chances.

To be honest Cari, I don't care. It's served it's purpose even if it limps on for a few more days or weeks. If the keyboard warriors who finished it off have been less likely to beat someone as a result then it can't be a bad thing. I went on for the death throes last night but it was not the old feeling, largely due to the absence of the pub. If it's not dead and burried now, I doubt I'll go back anyway. There are noises of interaction with 5 live. How long before the same boards are resurrected under a different name to tick some interactivity and inclusivity boxes at more expense than it would have cost to simply keep the old ones going.

Clywch clywch!
I amost ran over a squirrel on the cycle to work this morning. The blighter ran out and looked like it would run right across the path. I had to slam on the brakes - but fortunately I had new brakes fitted a fortnight ago, so squirrel and cyclist were both unharmed.
I did punch a jackdaw, though.
Reading back, I thought Notch's analogy with a software company was a superb piece of debating.

Lucky - good karma on not killing the squirrel. I see lots of squirrels (or squiggles as I used to call them when I was little) on the way to work in the park. I saw one running up a tree with a burger bap in its gob once.

Glentoran were my local club growing up- The Oval being just 15/20 minutes walk away. George Best grew up in East Belfast as well, near The Oval.
Glentoran had the chance to sign him but passed him over because he was 'too small'.

It's Friday, which means no work till Wednesday!
Scarlets info on season tickets gets released tomorrow. Looks like people who have purchased season tickets before get first dibs on the new ones (which is fair enough). I'm going to have to wait until the 15th to get mine anyway, but am keeping my fingers crossed there's some good deals to be had!

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Gibbo I'm touting Ireland to get to a World Cup semi final. By the time we face Italy and Australia we will have had nearly 10 tests together in a 2 month period. Despite having the worlds best backline Australia have no scrum and can be got at in the forwards. Despite a good display in 6 Nations I think Italy will have an average enough World Cup. They rely on home advantage. I expect Ireland v Wales, Australia v South Africa, France v England, New Zealand v Scotland in quarters.
In the semi finals we won't beat NZ or France. I also don't think we would record 2 wins on the trot against the Aussies. However we could in theory pinch a win against an English or South African team.

Going to miss the Champions League final. Will be on the train back from the Aviva Premiership final at that point.
Stag, I've long been predicting we'll take Australia. Now with what I believe will be an advantage in the scrum, I think we can take them. My biggest worry though is David Pocock.

Yes Australia and South Africa are teams I always expect us to beat. Do you think our backrow can nullify him or will we need a similar style player - maybe Jennings - to achieve that. As well as Pocock what I can see is morale dropping if Ireland put together phase after phase, lose ball close to Aussie line and us losing a lot of metres in a counter attack. They attack a different way to we do and I hope our players don't get frustatred.

Not sure if it has been mentioned but Sale have announced the signing of Henry Fourie from Leeds.

I also seriously believe Australia is there for the taking by Ireland in the RWC - just hope that the summer warm up games keep the belief up in the team - I remember being nearly pasted by Italy at Ravenhill before the last RWC (we were actually beat were it not for a very dodgy refereeing decision over ROGs try)

Mick,
My biggest worry is Jennings will start.
Stag,
I don't think we should select Jennings to counteract Pocock. What's he going to do stop him turning over ball that others can't? We should play our own game which includes a very dynamic back row.
Rava,
That's a very good signing for Sale. I'd been looking at their squad and they were seriously lacking at openside.
