That's at least 100 more than it should have been! We've enough quality to win this, but we all know Surrey of old.

Re: Surrey vs Worcestershire LV=County Championship
Sorry that I've risked jinxing things, folks. When they were 7 down for a lead of only 30 odd, I thought we were sitting comfortably but - as too often - not to be.
Agree with King Dave that Wilson should have tried something different and earlier. Meaker though should really be blowing away Div 2 tails for fun and easy wickets (I'll excuse Dunn for now on the grounds of youth). Great credit to Shantry and Leach for making 150 second innings runs ... but come on, eh!
Lose a couple of wickets tonight and Worcs become favourites ....

Hmmm. We really should have been chasing under a hundred.
Whatever happens from now, we've made it a lot more difficult than it should have been.

Re: Surrey vs Worcestershire LV=County Championship
I'm still a bit irritated by our collapse in the first innings. Going only on cricinfo it looked odd that once the big partnership was broken, Kapil set off like a train, only to fall just as rapidly, to be followed by three rapid ducks... and we only just scraped over 400. Not sure why le Roi was taking single off first ball of the over, exposing tailenders who had only just come in. Given that he was well set and has the power to score frequent boundaries, I thought at the time, not just with hindsight, that he should be taking much more of the strike.
In the end something of a relief that we only lost one wicket tonight. It's going to be potentially quite a difficult chase. Hopefully Ansari will dig in, but also keep the score moving along a bit more than he does sometimes.

Re: Surrey vs Worcestershire LV=County Championship
I can see corporal's point, if Roy/Wilson had got out cheaply, we would probably be staring defeat in the face now! What 'irked' me most, is that it appears as though Shantry came in (at effectively 34-7) thinking he had nothing to lose by 'having a go', and our bowlers were too stupid/arrogant to deal with this after a couple of shots disappeared to the boundary - what 'irked' me even more, is when we got the breakthrough and their number 10 did exactly the same! It seems we were waiting for them to get out, rather than taking stock and realising what we need to do to dismiss a number 9/10!
Currently 48/1 at the mo, Ansari 7no from 67 balls:shock:

Re: Surrey vs Worcestershire LV=County Championship
We're entitled to feel jittery and irritable having failed to cash in properly on good batting and bowling platforms. However, a sigh of relief is also allowed now with us having once more moved into the box seats.

Do you not think if the openers got off to a flyer, then it would be more comfortable? Especially with such a low total?

Do the players even care - this happens so many times with Surrey. How can you lose a match from such a dominant position (twice)?

Re: Surrey vs Worcestershire LV=County Championship
Totally disgusted! Just checked and in the return match we lost about 8 wickets for 80 runs in the first innings. Shantry has scored a ton and taken about 17 wickets against us in 2 games - I'd never even heard of him. Just shows that there is still a lot of work to do at the club. We need someone tougher at the helm - is Adam Hollioake available or is he still cage-fighting?

Jack Shantry, first man to score a ton from number 9 or lower and to take 10 wickets in a match. Unbelievable performance!

Re: Surrey vs Worcestershire LV=County Championship
We really should have been heading home yesterday with 24 points, not skulking back today with our tails between our legs.
Great credit to Worcs - enjoy it Mat and Pack! - but serious questions have to be asked of Surrey. Feel this defeat could bring the curtain down on Wilson's captaincy for next season.

If Wilson doesn't captain then I'm not sure he's worth a place in the team.

Thank you Guildford - you are as graceful in defeat as ever. I honestly couldnt say I ever felt we were likely to win this game from the moment that the second wicket partnership was broken on the first morning, but the fight, belief and determination in this Worcestershire squad has been a deciding factor in our results throughout the season. All teams are capable of collapse, as such there is no shame in Surrey's performance today, momentum is one of the most difficult forces to counteract within cricket and somehow this year Worcester have managed both to resist and to harness it.
This match IMO stands as a shining example of all that is wonderful within this game of ours. It has swung like a pendulum with virtuoso performances on both sides. Roy's hundred in the first innings for Surrey, Shantry's spell for his 6 fer followed by a barnstorming hundred which has all but guaranteed his folk hero status at New Road, to the grit and steel which Ansari showed yet again in the final dig. Another year's experience and he would probably have lead Surrey home. I hope when the result is a little less raw, this game can be appreciated on both sides for the spectacle that it was.
