Bremen 0-1 Genk (Camus)
I found this to be a very difficult game to call as both managers made good points in their tactics but also errors.
Miky – I like your defence very much – the CBs are both solid players and the FBs complement them well. However, I think your midfield was overrun today. There was so much concentration on taking Ibrahimovic out of the game that I can envisage space opening up for Welbeck and Camus to exploit. I reckon if you looked to attack Trebs’ midfielders with your pace and test their legs you’d be in a better position.
Trebs – There’s a good balance to the team and I like the big man-pacey man combo up front. However, you say that Miky’s FBs aren’t attack minded. I disagree and think that they are which allowed them to cause havoc down both wings, especially with your narrow tactics.
Overall, as I said it was tough for me to call but I think Miky’s a bit light up front and probably a bit too passive in this game. Trebs has the firepower to just sneak a win, but he’ll need to improve his defence I feel.
Verona 2-0 Montpellier (Delph, Sterling)
Pirlo was always going to be the man on the pitch today and this particular battle was won by Marky. GSC allowed Pirlo time on the ball inside his own half and Marky instructed him to drop back and pick out passes. However, the Verona midfield can run for days and are very effective in closing down any Montpellier attacks. Verona have serious pace up front too and which I like.
In the end this came down to the shape of the teams – the midfield diamond of Verona v the 3 Montpellier defenders. I think Remy was left isolated for the game as he was sitting on Behrami who was instructed to act as a blocker. The Montpellier wide men are good but found themselves crossing in to no one in the end.
Getafe 1-1 Bordeaux (Mirallas; Quintero)
This was the most difficult game for me to call. Both teams looked to exploit their opponent’s weaknesses and negate their strengths and managed to do so. I like nando’s plan to force the wingers inside and prevent the crosses into Di Natale but both wingers are more than capable of getting in shots from range. As for Viva, I can’t really fault the tactics but nando was right to use pace to attack the slow CBs.
Twente 2-2 Palermo (Schneiderlin, Weimann; Calhanoglu, Alcacer)
Both teams played a “high tempo” game resulting in chances galore at each end of the field. I liked soddy’s zonal defending which prevented their defenders being mucked around too much but took a risk in drawing a dangerous Twente side on. As for Hero, I thought his tactics are excellent but Palermo’s attacking tactics were good too and were effective against Twente’s defence.

There is no doubt in my mind that this match today will be difficult for us. Genk are a strong side and have become even stronger in the off season especially with the signing of Ibrahimovic. However there is no reason why we can’t win this game and I want us to have full concentration from the start.
Defensive tactics: Defence is key today against such a strong side with Ibrahimovic more than likely leading their line. I want Martinez and Badstuber to apply the pressure on Ibrahimovic for the whole game and look to take him out of the game by not allowing him time on the ball. We want to pressure Genk when they are on the ball in our half. I want us to look to recover the ball this way and be patient because I expect Genk to have a lot of the ball meaning we need to keep our concentration.
Attacking tactics: I realise that we may be defending a lot in this game and it will be down to us to work hard to recover the ball and hit Genk on the counter attack. When we counter I want us to have players available to do so hence the 4-3-3 formation today. We have the pace and direct players to do so I feel and this could be what eventually wins the match for us. We may come under pressure but I don’t want us to invite it, I want us to embrace it and look to make things happen from it. This means that Kishna and Montero will need to do a lot of running today to make this work as you will need to helping the defence out but also be prepared to burst forward with the counter attacks. Petersen I want you to wait on the half way line when Genk are in possession in our half to be the focal point of the counter attacks starting.
80th Minute: Kroos on for Stambouli
85th Minute: Di Santo on for Petersen.
90th Minute: Buffel on for Kishna

TACTICS
An interesting opening game against Miky today. We will look to play fairly narrow in midfield, try to keep the game that way but our full backs will have the license to push forward at will, when we have the ball as our midfielders will cover. Their full backs are not the most attack minded so this plays in our hands. Fletcher and Diaz should look to go box to box, full of energy and closing down their midfielders including Maher and Vilhena.
Ibrahimovic should play as a target man, looking to get in the middle and up against one of the centre backs, while Welbeck should look to work the channels and create space , be full of running. Look to play fast football through to the attacking players. Toulalan should sit deep, make sure there is no room for any play in front of the back four, but also look to play long balls forward. If we need to mix things up, move to a more orthodox 4-4-2 bringing on Elia and Quaresma, Klose can also come on to sneak a late goal.
I found this to be a very difficult game to call as both managers made good points in their tactics but also errors.

Verona 2-0 Montpellier (Delph, Sterling)
- Tactics:
- Verona
Howard
Janmaat-De Vrij-Reid-Van Aanholt
Behrami
Delph-Henderson
Sterling
Sturridge-Zarate
Tactics:
We have a fluid formation today, with Sterling and Zarate pulling wide often to take advantage of space if the FBs push up and our opponents seek to cramp the center of the field. Delph and Henderson provide the engine room in midfield, with both seeking to make runs from deep. FBs should look to support attacks and provide width when appropriate.
Attacking:
As above, Sterling and Zarate should be fluid in their positioning, often pulling wide to drag the defense out of position and take advantage of space behind the FBs. Sturridge to act as the main striker, looking to link up with the two often and sit on the shoulder of the last man. Delph and Henderson should look to support the attack from deeper, making late runs to avoid being picked up. The FBs should provide width when appropriate (1 at a time).
Defending:
Behrami to roam in front of the defense in a pure midfield destroyer role. Delph and Henderson provide the engine in midfield, expect both to set the tone early. We're content to let Pirlo have the ball deep in their half (though Sterling and Zarate should look to hurry him), he should not be allowed any time on the ball around the halfway line or further forward. Wingers should be shown down the line. Reid should get physical with Remy, De Vrij to read the game and provide cover across the back 4.
Montpellier
Starting XI: Anton Mitryushkin, DeAndre Yedlin, Mikel San Jose, Hugo Campagnaro, Jetro Willems, Andrea Pirlo, Jordy Clasie, James Ward-Prowse, Zakaria Bakkali, Viktor Fischer, Loic Remy
Mitryushkin
Yedlin - San Jose - Campagnaro - Willems
Pirlo
Ward-Prowse - Clasie
Bakkali--------------------------Fischer
Remy
Subs: Geoffrey Jourdren, Nicolas Isimat-Mirin, Siaka Tiene, Sebastian Kehl, Nabil Bentaleb, Ibrahim Afellay, Modou Barrow
First game of the season, very tough opposition but I've set us up to be able to absorb Verona's pressure and retain possession, before using our pacy front three to cause Verona problems. Pirlo v Sterling during the World Cup was won by the Italian and Sterling hasn't improved since then, as good as he is Pirlo as our DM/deep playmaker has the positional sense and experience to limit Sterling's impact. The defenders can cope with Sturridge and also if Verona play a second striker.
Defence: Mitryushkin to be big for one on ones and distribute to the deep dropping Pirlo. I want San Jose to be the one who tracks Sturridge, beat him to any passes towards him and force him to drop deeper as this will frustrate him, Campagnaro to use his positional sense to be the first to any second balls. If they play a second striker, Campagnaro to mark him and Clasie to help out with Sterling. In possession supply Pirlo. Yedlin and Willems to overlap the wingers going forward and get crosses into the right areas, rather than aim for individuals. Make sure you get back into position ASAP to avoid being caught out. Defensively force their wingers wide and block the crosses. Don't let them cut inside.
Midfield: Pirlo to be our quarterback, drop deep, get the ball and look to supply the front three. Clasie will be the protection, playing as a DM/CM who will give cover to Pirlo but is also capable of retaining possession and giving Pirlo a close option in possession if being closed down. Also make sure you assist Pirlo in dealing with Sterling, who will likely be the AM either in a 4-4-2 diamond or in a 4-2-3-1. The pair of you will force him wider and deeper, limiting his impact on the game. Ward-Prowse will be our box to box man, drop alongside Pirlo and Clasie when we're defending, but in possession be the one to support the front three, making runs into the area from deep.
Attack: Bakkali and Fischer playing as RW and LW, both have the abilities and tendencies to cut inside, but I want you to go outside and get crosses into the area. Remy to mark the deepest Verona defender, use your height and pace to worry their defenders, drift wide to drag defenders with you, to allow Bakkali and Fischer to make pacy runs down the middle into space for Pirlo to pick them out. All three of you more than capable of scoring and assisting, so get shots in where you can and look for your teammate in a better position. Switch positions on occasion to keep the Verona players guessing and drag them out of position.
Subs 70 mins:
If winning: Fischer off, Afellay on. Bakkali and Afellay deeper into wide midfield roles, switch to 4-5-1 and look to absorb pressure before hitting Verona on the counter attack.
If drawing: Ward-Prowse off, Afellay on. Afellay to AM, more creativity and more attacking flair going forward, same system but push for the win.
If losing: Clasie and Ward-Prowse off, Barrow and Afellay on. Switch to a 4-1-3-2, Pirlo the DM/playmaker/quarterback, Bakkali - Afellay - Fischer the AM's and Barrow and Remy as two conventional strikers, fullbacks push on to wingbacks and push for goals.

Team Talk: First game of the season against Nando who we beat last season. Alonso will be his main man and I want Tiago to pressure him stopping his influence in the game. We're generally looking to hit them with the pace from the wings.
Defensive Tactics
Terry to pick up the main striker and press him forcing him away from goal, Distin to use his pace to cover or pick up any other runner. Fullbacks to force wingers on the outside if they're playing on their stronger foot and vice versa if playing on stronger door which will impact the delivery. The trio in midfield work as a unit, put pressure forcing them back, intercepting play. My wingers have to track back if the opposition fullbacks go forward.
Attacking Tactics
I only want one fullback to push up creating space for winger to cut in. Tiago get furthest forward from the midfielders getting into box looking for any loose ball. Ledesma look to play in the wingers behind the fullbacks and keep the ball moving, Kramer keep it simple. Son and Mirallas use your pace to stretch the opposition, run at them making them commit and get balls into the box. Di Natale play as the predator, do you work in the box always stay on the move and look for goal scoring opportunity.
Bordeaux
---------------Carrasso
Jung --- Laporte --- Manolas --- Maxwell
----------Alonso --- Lucas
El Ghazi ------Quintero---------McGeady
----------------Bojan
Subs: Olimpa,Chalme,Besic,Cheyrou,Vidal,Sanogo,Drogba
Expected Viva XI:Romero,Maggio,Terry,Naldo,Kurzawa,HM Son,Ledesma,Kramer,Mirallas,Totti & Di Natale or Berba (4-2-3-1)(4-4-2) If Totti doesn't play and Berba does.
Team Talk: Viva is a strong manager and much improved his side over the season the weakness is the slow CB pairing so Bojan has been moved up top and more pace brought into the side. Shall defend the wings and negate the supply into the box
Defensive Tactics
- Back 4 to sit deep so can't use the pace behind us
- Laporte to stick tight to the main forward and make sure he doesn't get a sniff at goal, Manolas to cover round if manage to turn Laporte.
- Manolas to watch for Totti getting into goalscoring positions.
- Jung & Maxwell i want to force Mirallas/HM Son inside by blocking down the line and make sure they down get crosses in.
- Alonso & Lucas to sit and marshall infront of the back 4 and look to track Totti & either winger as their forced inside
Attacking Tactics
- El Ghazi & McGeady to use pace and trickery to get at Maggio/Kurzawa look to make runs between the CB/FB. Make sure they stay back to defend if they go forward then stay up there and look to exploit the space on counter.
- Alonso to dictate from deep with passing knocked over the defense for the wingers
- Lucas to get further forward and link everything up into Quintero and the wingers
- Quintero to drift in between defense & CB and look to pull them out of position, If they don't follow look to slide balls in behind the defense
- Bojan to drift across Terry/Naldo and look to roll them for runs in behind them and look to finish clinically when get chances.
Subs: If Losing then El Ghazi off for Drogba

Twente 2-2 Palermo (Schneiderlin, Weimann; Calhanoglu, Alcacer)
- Tactics:
- Twente
------------------------Stevens-----------------
Chambers------Blackett----Rojo--------Durm
---------------Carvalho----Suarez-----------------
Promes-------------Calhanoglu------Balde Diao
------------------------Alcacer--------------------
A new season but with the same philosophy as last, a high octane, high pressing side with balls to feet utilising the youthful energy. Calhanoglu to pull the strings going forward, looking to create chances as the three forwards use their movement to make gaps appear. Pressurise high up the pitch and don't let the opposition have time upon the ball or to escape their own half.
Defence
A back four with Rojo given the role of picking up the main striker as they enter threatening positions, be aware of their movement but ensure you don't get dragged out of position. Blackett to assist where required but to pick up threats from their wingers/AM etc if they break into the danger zone. Fullbacks to shepherd their wingers on the outside, no rash challenges and going to ground, slow their attacks down and block crosses. Carvalho main defensive of midfield trio, look to stay back when our FBs go forward.
Attack
Calhanoglu to play in the hole linking up defence to attack. Look to get some early shots in on goal and put their keeper under pressure early. Wingers to alternate between coming inside with through balls to Alcacer and going wide to stretch their backline. Alcacer to never stand still, keep their centrebacks back by dropping in and out of an offside position to give Calhanoglu more space. All forward options to put a shift in on chasing balls down and forcing their defence to play it out early. Invite clumsy tackles and go down easily in areas of danger so Calhanoglu can smash one home.
Subs: 80m Gauld, Green and James on for Promes, Diao and Durm, same formation but with fresh legs to continue the attack.
Palermo
Ujkani
Beck - Mustafi - Coloccini - Pasqual
Schneiderlin - Cattermole
Weimann - Canales - Perisic
Emenike
Overview
We are looking to play a high tempo and direct game today with an emphasis on getting the ball wide, and getting it forward quickly. We're happy to draw the opposition on, but pressure the ball when it's in midfield with our ball winners and try to attack them whilst they're transitioning back to defence.
Defence
A solid and experienced unit with a remit to hold a sensible line and stay as a bank of four when being attacked.
We're not going to be pulled deep by forwards dropping off, and we're going to play a zonal system in open play with plenty of communication between the centre halves.
The deep midfielders in front will have a high workload today with the idea being they press the ball when it comes into our half and win it back for us to attack the opposition.
Attacking
We want to use the width today and our wide players will be direct in running and taking on opponents inside and out. Crossing if shown outside with the other winger attacking the far post, or cutting inside to link up with Emenike or take a pot shot where the space is available.
Emenike is the lone forward and he'll be using his pace to get into space and fashion chances. Where the ball is out wide, he'll look to out strength the defence and win the ball in the air.
Canales is the pivot between attack and defence when we win the ball and will play make from behind the forwards.
Schneiderlin has licence to break forward and assist the attack, Cattermole will stay deep.

I think perhaps Marky's tactics are a touch long for this league. Not massively but a bit too like the old league style where we were churning out reams.

I've seen Pirlo make players better than Sterling chase shadows.
(That sounds incredibly snarky, it's not meant to be!!)

I meant on markys comment from the World Cup game. At best it was 50:50, Sterling was too quick for the Italian midfield to pick up.

Thanks for doing results TSJ, although I feel 2-0 was harsh considering that would have been the score had I not bothered doing tactics at all.

To be honest, I haven't been strict on limits at all. Most seem to have to settled on team overview, and attack/defense instructions.

I remember when I won, Azzy said I lost the final task (featuring Viva) but my overall performance meant I won, and Viva STILL took the credit
