First ever own try

A bit of a Friday funny from an Ozzie club match. The commentator gets it wrong at first too, but once you've seen a replay, its probably the biggest howler I've ever seen!

I had to watch that a few times to see how on earth there could be any need to go to the TMO in the first place.

Absolute epic fail from the TMO! He really does need to be sacked for that one!

Brilliant!
There was someone on the old 606 who told a story from ? their school days when some teacher was drafted in to ref a game. There was a grubber kick through into the in-goal area which was chased by both an attacking player and a defender. The defender won the race and touched the ball so the ref awarded an "own try". The story had me in stitches for days!

Re: First ever own try
Slightly at a tangent, but I would be happy to see a NFL style 'safety' as opposed to a Scrum V for dabbing down defensively after it being carried back (like in this video)

Re: First ever own try
If the team in possession are driven back towards their line, to a point where they actually ground the ball over the line, the opposition pick up 2pts, and a restart as per normal scoring commences. It is a fair reward for pushing the opponents back, and will probably save five min for game time with the scrum being set, collapsed, set etc (also may see less yellows for collapsing).

Re: First ever own try
So it wouldn't count if they kick the ball into the goal area and its grounded by a defending player who is tackled? Only when they drive the defender over the try line?
