Brilliant piece to read if you can; BOD is going to be a very good pundit you feel.

O'Driscoll Dissects Some Myths Empty Re: O'Driscoll Dissects Some Myths

Some of my favourite quotes. Talking about why he prefers making a big hit over scoring a try;

BOD wrote:"It was always a tackle. In the France game when I got three tries I hit Philippe Bernat-Salles and turned the ball over. Now the last try is a good try, a good pick-up. But I was only a young lad of 20, and I got a real thrill from that hit. He had grey hair! And I really, really hit him flush. He crumbled. And spilled the ball. I got a serious kick from that.

BOD wrote:If I run aggressively and Jamie Roberts runs aggressively, there's a good chance he's going to win that collision. I'm a realist with that.

But you can get your own little kick out of that. Because you have to start thinking that little bit better. Catching guys off guard. Seeing things a fraction earlier, so you can get the edge. In the Lions tour of '09, I knew that Danie Roussow hadn't seen me. That's why I shot out of the line fast, because I could catch him blind. I thought I could catch Brodie Retallick blind in the All Blacks game last year. But he saw me, and I got concussed. If I was there half a second earlier I would have dominated that collision, but he saw me, and gave a little dip.

And of course;

BOD wrote:"We like beating England at anything. We beat England at cricket a few years ago. I didn't even know we played cricket until we beat England.

I agree, I'm enjoying BOD as a pundit right now. He has been giving some nice insights on the BT Sport Rugby programme.

I think he has been doing some good 'how to' bits but I don't think he has properly critiqued or given good punditry during a game so far.

Recently retired players are too biased to make good pundits. Drico is generally an interesting enough guy to listen to but dont expect him to be overly critical of anyone any time soon.

Its the age old problem.

New players are rubbish because half the players they commentate on are their mates. They would get shunned if they said what they thought completely.

Naas Botha is a great pundit. He says what he thinks and is very analytical. If someone is not pulling their weight he says it.

However the players hate him, absolutely hate him. Why because he says things they don't want to hear.

Not sure I agree with that - he's respectful and not going to go out to insult people on purpose, but his understanding of the game is such that he will spot the flaws in what teams are doing and point them out. Ben Kay's a great example of someone who's made a rapid transition to being a very effective pundit and he comes across as unbiased because he explain what he's seen without making unnecessary judgments. But he is actually quite critical of all sorts of things - including the IRB and referees - without being offensive. BOD is in a very similar mold.

Ben Kay has been out the game a while though right? 2007? A lot easier when there is none of your mates playing to critique performance.

Kay retired at the end of the 2009/10 season and started with ESPN at the beginning of the 2010/11 season (basically the same as BOD now). He was very good at the beginning, and he's got better.

Austin Healey was good straight away. It's not really in his nature to pull punches.

Will Greenwood was excellent in print when he started but less sure-footed on his television debut. For The Telegraph, he was good at talking you through the thought processes of the modern player. It made Ackford and Cleary look like dinosaurs instantly. I think that both of them soon realized they weren't going to cut it any more as rugby analysts and ended up going for the tabloid gossip approach instead.

Drico is an entertaining pundit with ease in front of the camera.

All he needs to do now is not look bored when someone else is talking or when forwards are talking about mauls.

True.

'Good'ness is in the eye of the beholder not in the critque though.  Afterall, someone throws a perfect bit of ref critquesomeness up here and the pond don't like it, he's called an absolute eejit.
If a critiquer agrees with you, he's an angel.  If he has a different opinion, then he's obviously in the wrong job.
That's the part I feel many fans don't get about themselves - they only like people who give opinions they already feel themselves either consciously or subconsciously.  They don't actually learn from pundits, they simply share beliefs with them.

I like Jiffy's analysis even if people don't like him or his voice, hes usually correct in where Wales are weak.

That said, he annoyed me when Phil Davies (his Brother in law) was in charge of the Blues, because he would never criticise him, his tactics or his selection policy, instead the players caught all the flack.

All I can ever remember him is saying "numbers, numbers"... its quite easy to see that from high in the rafters. Not so easy on the pitch.

I like Jiffy because he's.......fun (not necessarily 'funny') but fun in his tight ball of passion and intensity.  And that's the only reason I listen to pundits - entertainment.  I find methodical rules and regulation monotone pundits insufferably boring (*cough* O'Shea, Guscott)

O'Driscoll Dissects Some Myths Empty Legendary Brian O'Driscoll Retires

Post by TobyBryant Mon 03 Nov 2014, 6:48 pm

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-union/29837289

Odd timing of this story on the bbc featured sporting stories today.

Can anyone tell me why?

Amongst other things the great man is forced to answer questions on how he never managed to beat NZ, win a World Cup and whether or not he is still angry at Tana Umaga, oh and whether or not the Irish team were good mates. Is this a Back handed hatchet job? Or is there a subtext I am missing?

It's the thoughts on rugby from a player who played it and recently retired. What sub-text is needed? Why does Jeremy Guscott get asked questions regularly on the same site? Why not.

Post by Hound of Harrow Tue 04 Nov 2014, 7:08 pm

I wouldn't call the subjects 'myths'. It's more how one player sees things*. Paul O'Connell probably has a different view on those points, as would most players.

* I didn't realise that BOD only had 50% vision, something that Brendan Gallagher mentioned in a review of BOD's autobiography in last weekend's TRP.
