What message will that then send out to the likes of Patchell?
The message is, if you were up to standard, we wouldn't need to fast-track anyone.
I don't have a problem with it. Anscombe's mum is Welsh, he's eligible to play, let's get the best players on the pitch.
LP,
I not got a problem with him coming over here and proving himself but let him to that first. Not wanting to be rude or anything as unsure of your age but if like me you remember the whole JJ Hughes affair he was fats tracked over here as the new messiah and well look how that worked out.
I think we all agree that proving yourself in new Zealand is probably a lot harder than proving yourself in Wales. Why does he have to do more If we need him next week then we need him.
I think it is good to make the competition for spots tougher, makes players like Patchel work harder.
Again for those at can remember I refer back to the JJ Hughes affair haven't we learnt our lessons? Obviously not.
JJ Hughes was an Aussie not a kiwi. Very different story.
So just because he's a kiwi he has a god given right to be brilliant and walk into any team that wants him does he? If he was that good then he would be in the ABs squad and wouldn't give a monkeys about playing for Wales.
You are simplifying my already simplyfied repost.
We already know a lot about this guy, he has played a lot of rugby and he looks a real talent. JJ Hughes was an anomaly. No one knew much about him. That was a very different era in the welsh rugby recovery from the dirth of the 1990s.
I'm looking forward to seeing him get involved and find your hesitancy misplaced in this case.

Re: Wales vs NZ
Nationality just seems watered down so much now. Not sure if it has been mentioned already here, but if Anscombe ever wears a welsh jersey imo we will look like a right bunch of <chose insult (they all are fair)> as it wasn't that long ago we were all up in arms about a similar situation with Jock Shingler, only difference is a technically.

Re: Wales vs NZ
Maes,
You say a lot is known about him but is that now just due to the amount of coverage worldwide rugby gets on tv, after all there wasn't that much coverage it in 97 outside the International.
As for Anscombe playing a lot of rugby he's only played super rugby 30 odd times compared to Hughes' 20 so not a great deal more there.

Re: Wales vs NZ
I just think if hes something like 5th choice in NZ why does that automatically make him 1st or 2nd choice for Wales? Are we really that far behind in terms of player development?
I'll have to see how he performs for the Blues, my guess is he'll take a lot of time to adjust to the game in the NH so won't set the world on fire for a while.

He was also excellent at flyhalf fir the BABs winning the junior RWC, 30 games in three years is pretty impressive though eh..! Add to that all the itm cup stuff there is plenty of coverage of him...!
Even on you tube

Because the first four choices are probable the top four fly halves in world rugby?

I think he's a better fullback than 10 but in thinking of him lining up against the AB's I'd certainly want him watched. I think he's perfect for the Welsh back game. He's got a good mixture of flair and 'correctness'. He would be 5th in NZ but I think he's been dealt an unfair hand here, so beating NZ might just be up there on his bucket list.

Re: Wales vs NZ
I guess time will tell. From Gatlands position it means more competition for places and possibly more options. To me he's a player that hasn't really kicked on. I actually thought he was best 10 at the 2011 junior world cup (the tournement included Morgan (Wales), Ford and Owens (England) as well as Barrett and Sopoaga (NZ). He hasn't really kicked on since then. To be fair his way in the chiefs is blocked by Cruden.

I know BC, thats the part I mean re a hard deal. JK let him go as a prime example of his inability to select 10's and only in Ihaia West (who I reckon will give that top 4 a run for their money next year) has he found a decent one.
Had Anscombe been the Blues 10 for the last 3 seasons I reckon they'd have done a lot better.

Well least I am not on my own in thinking we should give him time but looks like he won't get it and will rushed straight in to the set up as soon as he can be.

Re: Wales vs NZ
As you can see I've had far to much time on my hands today....
To honour the 30th game between New Zealand and Wales, here are 30 meaningless statistics/facts.
1. New Zealand and Wales have played each other 29 times since the first game on 16 December 1905.
2. 18 games have been played in Wales, 7 in New Zealand and 4 at Neutral venues.
3. Wales has won 3 games.
4. The last Welsh win was in December 1953.
5. There are 2 Welsh players from the game that are still alive, centre Gareth Griffiths (82) and No 8 John Gwillaim (91).
6. There are 3 New Zealand players from the game that are still alive, centre John Tanner (87), halfback Keith Davis (84) and No 8 William McCaw (87). Pretty sure William McCaw is the uncle that sat down with a young Richie and mapped out his rugby career.
7. The All Blacks didn’t draw even until November 1967.
8. Wales Biggest win is by 5 points in 1953.
9. The result of 5 games have been separated by no more than a converted try.
10. New Zealand's biggest win is by 52 points
11. Wales biggest loss in Wales was by 38 points in 2005.
12. Wales closest game in New Zealand was a loss by 19 points in 1969.
13. Wales have failed to score a try against New Zealand 14 times.
14. The All Blacks have failed to score a try against Wales on 2 occasions (in 1905 and 1963, they had 3 tries disallowed in 1905).
15. Wales have scored more than 2 tries against New Zealand 2 times.
16. New Zealand have scored more than 2 tries against Wales on 19 occasions.
17. Stephen Jones has played the All Blacks in the most games for Wales (11 games).
18. Richie McCaw has played the Welsh in the most games for New Zealand (10 games).
19. Stephen Jones 89 career points scored against the All Blacks is the most for a player representing Wales.
20. Daniel Carters 162 career points scored against the Welsh is the most for a player representing New Zealand.
21. Geoffrey Jones is the only Welsh player to score more than one try against the All Blacks in their career for Wales (*he scored 2 tries in 1935).
22. John Kirwin's 8 tries against Wales is the career record for an All Black.
23. There have been no Welsh born All Blacks.
24. At least 4 New Zealand born players have played for Wales (Sonny Parker, Brett Sinkinson, Shane Howorth, Dale MacIntosh).
25. New Zealand have won 8 out of 10 games at the Millennium Stadium. They have lost to South Africa (1999) and France (2007).
26. The Millennium Stadium is the New Zealand’s least successful stadium in the UK and Ireland (80% win rate).
27. Wales have won just over half the games they have played at the Millennium Stadium.
28. Richie McCaw will play his 137th test for New Zealand and captain the All Blacks for the 100th time.
29. Warburton will play his 50th test match and captain Wales for the 31st time.
30. The most important statistic will be reveled at the final whistle on Saturday…..

You'd sell it?
Or is it a similar case to the usual Antiques Roadshow character. The guy/woman who claims they have something that is of such great sentimental value that they were afraid to bring it, are afraid to drop it and fear the auctioneer even breathing on it.
BUT....................... wot's it worth now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And if it's worth nothing but sentiment then I'll try to smile through it and repeat that my intention was never to sell anyway. But inwardly, I'll want revenge on the entire world!!!!!!!!!

I know exactly what it is worth I collect ruby programmes and jerseys. Fact is the 1953 programme has value as the last time Wales won, in effect it will drop in value when Wales win ... eventually. It take pride and place on a wall in my home but I do have a spare. Good collectors don't go to dross like the Antiques road circus. In fact I am not sure where you got this price thing from in the first place.

It was in terms of points scored. Beat the 50-21 in Sydney in 2003. Margin best is 37 points from the 43-6 rout at Athletic Park in 1996.
Right time to head to the airport. Will probably see some of you clowns there. I can't remember what Brains tastes like. Not sure if that's a good thing or not.

Nevermind chilly. When the game is over and Warrior McCaw surveys the battleground and all the dead heaped upon dead - there'll be ample opportunity to have a taste if you're peckish.

Not wins by Ireland though, were they?
At least our lot have beaten the All Blacks 41 times or something.
Whilst you are still waiting... ha ha!

Re: Wales vs NZ
Ireland would have at least won game too if we had played NZ 152 times like Australia. Still one draw in 28 games is bad.
Australia havent won one game in the last ten games v NZ and have only won a few in the last 28 so your record isnt that good.

152 games is a very big difference to 28 games. Not particularly deluded to think Ireland will get at least one win v NZ in the next 124 games. I think you might be alone on that one doggie.

Still a hopeless winless record there, germs. Even 1 in 124 games isn't too brilliant.
Best you keep a low profile on the subject. You're the only one who seems to be so proud of it!

You are getting yourself in a knot. Never said I was proud of it however, 4 from 28 games isnt much better than 0 from 28 games so I assume you will be keeping a low profile too?

It seems you are also a creative mathematician. Good luck with that but I'm afraid you don't fool anyone.

Eh?
Irelands last 28 games v NZ - 0 wins
Australia's last 28 games v NZ - 4 wins
Thats not creative at all thats whats in the history books. Congrats on the 4 wins but it isnt much to celebrate really.

Re: Wales vs NZ
I'm not going to get into a slanging match of 'banter' here. Banter is fine but please keep the tone of 'banterishness' to go with it.
But just looking at the number of games played between NZ and AUS plus NZ and IRE, and win ratios therein. Ireland would just need about 8 wins against New Zealand to balance up their win ratio with Australia against NZ.
So.................... given how little we play them, and given the balance of probabilty that even if we improved dramatically through this new century, we still won't be winning ALL encounters with them - I'd say that means we'll be most likely hitting eight victories over them sometime close to 50 years into the future, if we're playing well through those decades.
So..............not much in it at all

Yeah but they arent even talking about anything. Think they need the Irish to talk for them. (and one Aussie)
Ireland v Australia will be a better game anyway.

It has been very foggy lately with some sever weather alert warnings. Rained hard all day today. Forecast for tomorrow is good though. I think it will be dry and cold. The Landsdowne pitch is pristine in all weather so should be good game.

Whether people are talking about it or not, I'd still rather not have to read about Ireland v Australia ta.
