DC 2014 Final - 21-23 Nov 2014
First topic message reminder :
SUI and FRA contest the final in a few days.
http://www.daviscup.com/en/draws-results/tie/details.aspx?tieId=100021090
SUI has two players coming out of WTF, while FRA has depth in numbers.
SUI may never be at this point in the near future and can make the best of the presented opportunity. Federer and Wawrinka would like to add this to their CV, if they can. They will rue the opportunity that Lady Luck has thrown their way.
FRA is the last hurdle, and have some good players, a home court advantage and a surface that may favor them more the the SUI. H2Hs may be meaningless in such a contest given that any of the players on one side can beat players on the other side of the net.
ARG v ESP turned out to be an excellent DC final, with DelPotro, Monaco, Nalbandian trying their best to get the better of the other side.
Will this final live up to its billing?

The commentators reiterating that story. Apparently 5 minutes before the teams were picked! I think he even practiced with Gasquet! If that is true, I wouldn't let him near the DC team again. Quite frankly that is disgraceful.
Disgraceful indeed! However, Benneteau is playing brilliantly - the regrets for France is that Gasquet and Ben didn't prepare together..
It's like Benny is trying to win the match by himself!
Needs to support Gasquet and get him involved.
Maybe involving him is a bit risky?
Sadly he can't sub Richard.
He needs to get Gasquets confidence going. I would go as far as say something like you take the baseline and I take the net.

After this tournament, I'd agree with that one. They couldn't drop him before tomorrow. What kind of mental state is Gasquet going to be in now?

If only Clement had a Connors or Hewitt like character that would climb right into the ar$e of your opponent.

Maybe Tsonga injured himself yesterday, and wanted to give himself as long as possible to see if he could play?

Well if the story is true, I would like Tsonga to cop the flack that a certain Federer did last week.

We should bring in subs during DC doubles matches!

If he's not playing tomorrow, it will be Simon instead. Quite a tight match up with Federer too.

I can't see you can say that given Federer won more rubbers than Stan in the QF&SF!

Has a DC been won by basically 2 players before, rather than a large team where others could win points in singles and double?

I agree with lk. Federer got them there and Stan has stepped up in the final when required to do so. So all in all both would deserve it.

Indeed. Federer carried that team this year when Stan's form was in the toilet. Now it's time for Stan to stand up and he is.
It will be a team effort.

I know you greatly dislike Federer, but surely you must be joking. No single man can carry a team to the win in the DC, there needs to be at least two involved. The two Swiss have been a fantastic team together this year.
But Stan sure is standing up and being counted right now, when his team needs him most. Awesome match play!

What a result. I don't think I could've dreamt that better. Both players out in 3 sets in just over 2 hours. Fantastic.
As for the French. Well if the Tsonga rumours are true, just unbelievable. To pull that in a final? Benny and Gasquet never looked comfortable out there.
Not over yet, but the French need a miracle.

Wilander thinking Tsonga will fire up the crowd?
This is a guy that was booed at RG and then moans about the crowd yesterday?
Unless he throws Euro's into the crowd, I can't see them fired up for him

Re: DC 2014 Final - 21-23 Nov 2014
They're a damn good doubles pairing, they should really team up more often. Tough with the scheduling as it is though, alas we need to see more top singles players on the doubles circuit again.
No clue what the hell Tsonga thinks he's doing if that rumour is true! Perhaps he deserves to be roundly trounced tomorrow by his fellow 'shirka'

anyone else catch Federers interview at the end when asked about his match with Tsonga and how well Stan has played? "Tsonga right now is secondary, I really hope this is Stans weekend and he brings us where we want to be" am I reading too much into that or does that sound like he doesn't rate his own chances against Tsonga?

Remarkably though, the tie is still in the balance - how is Fed's back? Will JWT play? Can Stan actually beat a Monfils who's on fire? Will it even get that far?
This could honestly be anywhere from 4-1 to 2-3, and neither extreme would surprise me given the circumstances. Good drama for the end of the season
Edit: CAS, sounds like he's trying to credit Stan's contribution more than anything.

Can Wawrinka beat a firing Monfils? I don't actually know. Will be exciting to find out for sure. Hopefully it matters.
Who plays Fed? Tsonga is hardly tennis' Mario Balotelli, so I don't think he'd just drop out. Maybe there is a niggle? Maybe he just felt being 100% for the fourth rubber was more important. We'll only know if he was wrong in 24Hrs.
