The plot thickens -"cry baby"
Found this interesting comment on a tennis blog I was reading, thought it would be worth sharing. Still has an element of speculation but have to say it doesn't look too good. Also at the end you can see Federer grimace at match point, rarely see him do something like that. Seems it was one of the most dramatic matches you are likely to ever see.

Listen carefully here but its pretty clear what is happening.
Here is a comment from some Swiss guy in some other post.
shnicshnac
I am swiss and I can tell you what happened, its in the papers here.
At 5 all and deuce in the 3rd set, between first and second serve.
Mirka is cheering very loud.
Stan interrupts Rogers Serving motion.
Mourier asks in French: “Whats up?”
Stan looks to Mirka and says: “Not just before the serve..”
With that he means, she should be quiet between the serves and not cheer so close before the serve.
Then she replies: “Cry, Baby, cry.”
And the Stan gets mad and answers to her: What?!?”
He adresses Mourier: “Did you hear what she say?”
Stan also says: “She did it already at Wimbledon..”
If you listen really carefully, you can just about make out "cry baby" very faintly

No matter what was said, Wawrinka should have talked to Mourier and looked for support, and he has every right to.

Yeah, Stan should of let it go, not make a scene and talk to Fed after the match.

Re: The plot thickens -"cry baby"
Interesting insights CAS.
Some double standards being applied here by posters, Stan is told to shut up about the off court comments but Federer lauded for shouting at Djokovic's parents another time.
There's obviously history in Stan's feelings....it was a high pressure situation in a high stakes match, the last thing needed was external pressure being applied by the wife of the guy he's trying to beat.
I would actually imagine Roger wasn't too happy with Mirka tbh...it strikes me he likes to win matches without any external influences. He needs to apologise to Stan for her behaviour...or do it herself directly. Plus I can imagine Stan being annoyed at Luthi sitting in Federer's box when the following weekend he's going to be cheering Stan on...that wasn't great decision making either. I actually feel for Stan after that match.
Plus can you imagine Roger/Stan - who were good friends don't forget - having a very heated argument about Mirka after such a tremendous match. This would be uncharted territory for Federer even after 1222 ATP matches played. You wonder how much it screwed with Federer's mind to such an extent it was a factor in his withdrawal from the final.

I've steered clear of this subject because I think the whole thing is blown out of proportion but I have to agree here.lydian wrote:Some double standards here though, Stan told to shut up about the off court comments but Federer lauded for shouting at Djokovic's parents another time.
Federer's telling off of Mummy and Daddy Djokovic has always been viewed positively.
But now we have some naughtiness from the Federer box, the main response has been 1) to question the reports and then 2) to suggest that Stan was out of line.
I can guarantee that if it had been the Djokovic box, or worse, Uncle Toni, the tone would have been much more condemnatory.
For the record, I don't think that either Federer shouting at the Djokos or Stan shoting at Mirka was anything shocking. It's what happens in the heat of competition.

Re: The plot thickens -"cry baby"
To me I agree with HM, it has been blown out of proportion. Both men need to sit down and just put it behind them. Nothing an apology won't fix.
In terms of Stan's conduct. If it was aimed at Mirka then good on him. Whether it be Djokovic's parents or Toni Nadal or anyone that imposes themselves in a match un-necessarily deserve the stick they get back.
Mirka herself is not immune from this.

Stan hasn't done anything wrong. Why would he apologise? This wasn't even in the same stratosphere as "Be Quiet"

Of course he has the right to protest, but bearing in mind that they are close friends/Swiss players, should of been more discreet.
I know myself, would not shout at a friends wife, no matter what, but take it up with my friend.
Same if I was Fed, I would not of shouted at Djokos parents, but tell the Umpire.
There has to be some manly honor here between sportsman, thought emotions in a game, and most are "kids", plays a role in them making silly stuff.

Re: The plot thickens -"cry baby"
The level of friendship between Stan and Roger is probably over-stated.
Do they socialise outside of tennis? Do they holiday together?
They're occasional team-mates so they probably know each other better than normal for tennis players. But for most of the year they are competing against each other.
I've always felt that Stan seems cooler toward Roger than Roger is toward Stan.

Thanks IMBL...wow...I'm currently in Spain.
Well then...this is going to completely overshadow the DC preparations...which will actually really annoy Federer given he wants this title badly and it's his absolute last chance. Oh to be a fly on the Federer household wall at the moment...

The coverage is silly.
Week after week we see footballers calling each other every name under the sun. We see rugby players punching each other, boxers trash talking each other
But a tennis player's wife calls someone a cry baby and it's front page news.
Ridiculous.

I thought the story was quite interesting, and am neither a hater of Stan or Roger; and I'm not part of the tabloid media as far as I'm aware.
If you're not interested in commenting, rather than having a go at people who are, how about not commenting anything at all ?

Re: The plot thickens -"cry baby"
Interesting new development, although not sure it needed a separate thread. We already have one on the same topic.
It's difficult to say who's really at fault when you can't hear what's being said too well, and you don't know what's gone on behind the scenes, or what all the precedents are. But, best guess...it doesn't look too good for Mirka. It will be interesting to see if she denies it. Perhaps if it's true she should consider even a public apology before the DC final.
Perhaps in an ideal world Warwinka should have carried on to receive the serve and then speak to Roger privately after the match. I think speaking privately in the first instance and publically if it continues is generally the way forward. Then again, we don't live in an ideal world. And maybe he has voiced similar opinions privately in the past.
Have to say I did notice some needle in the match. Noticeably at about 4-3 in one of the sets, on a break point Warwinka saved with a volley, Warwinka apologised for something (the mishit nature of the volley, according to one source) and Federer seemed annoyed. And yet at the handshake it all looked behind them.
Interesting to read the comments on here. Suddenly all the Nadal fans and Djokovic fans are out in force loving this negative story and trying to blow this out of proportion while the Federer fans are in full denial and damage limitation mode. Really, no objective analysis from hardly anyone. You guys are acting like lawyers in one court taking one side.
One other thing amused me. The Telegraph comment about "a new video emerged". "Emerged" being media speak for "although we reported on the match and the argument, none of us bothered to watch the match carefully, nor could we be bothered to rewatch the match and find the incident, until someone else did it for us".

Also keep in mind the video could be a hoax or something. Or, alternatively, that certainn sounds have been amplified to make them audible, making it worse. You cannot trust the mainstream media to cross check sources. If anyone has the ability to access a full repeat of the match on an online service such as Tennis TV, Eurosport etc, it would be worth a quick cross check if you can hear "cry baby" in there. Of course, a day or two without denial, and it would seem less likely to be a hoax.

Not making any assumptions as to what happened in this incident but when people are competing at any level sometimes rationale can go out of the window. I've often seen quotes in sport where a player says that an opposing player is his friend but that stops when the game/match starts. Whatever happened was in the heat of the battle and I don't think people think too much about etiquette in that situation. The handshake at the end of the match usually brings back normality.

Slight PR job obviously, but I can't believe this is even nearly as serious as the media are playing it out. Assuming it was Mirka (too lazy to read the links), I don't think the conversations went any harsher than
"Roger WTF is up with your wife?"
"Well Frak you Stan"
"Frak you too"
"Alright wanna grab some lunch later on tomorrow?"
Haven't any of you had an almighty blow out with a mate before? I have... it got resolved before we had cricket practise thirty minutes later.
I don't think Stan was mad Federer decided to win while injured, or something. You don't get to #3 in the world, a slam winner, hoping people hand things to you. Just think Stan was peeved about Mirka, Roger told him to Frak off, and he told Roger the same. They spoke it out an hour later, and laughed at how endorphin come downs makes you say stupid things.

Stan: You know why? I'm not on her side. She did the same at Wimbledon. Each time I'm on her side she shouts before I serve. It's unacceptable.

That's probably about right. It's an interesting occurrence, but the press's job is to big it up as much as possible. Some will happily believe the press, but not the PR, and some vice versa, despite them being in pretty much the same spin business.

At this time, I try to understand and asks Wawrinka what happened. He replied: "She speaks to me." I realize that it is irritated against the wife of Roger Federer.

Re: The plot thickens -"cry baby"
What was Mirka thinking? 'Cry baby'. What a pathetic insult. Of course its completely unreasonable to shout out between first and second serves. Stan gets too irate over things though. It would have been better to calmly go over to her and ask her to stop.

Mourier is the chair umpire. It is his responsibility to handle such situations. Lahayani deals with such with a smile, Garner just reads the riot act to Federer.

Was that a response to what I said?
Anyway don't get me started on Lahayani. His increases in volume to try to build tension are so annoying.

Yes, absolutely disgraceful behaviour by Mirka, but Stan I think could have reacted better. He said she did the same at Wimbledon, so surely this time he should have been better prepared for it rather than let it get to him ?greengoblin wrote:What was Mirka thinking? 'Cry baby'.
