Sr,
1).Correct. Wonderful is right. Though in the American order of things behind the NFL, College Football, High School Football, NBA, College B'ball.
2).Not much of a market: 21,000 per home game.
3).But no other nations pay their players a fraction of this sort of bounty. He'll probably end up using PED's, just like his predecessor as highest paid.
Ridiculous money!

Kwin -

The gate matters a lot less than the TV revenue. Not so sure about the order of things as you have prioritized them; (not discounting it, perhaps you have data I'm not aware of), but a number of those sports don't overlap full season.

Suspect he's already on PEDs! A brother of a major league GM works for us and, over drinks, mentioned one of the most challenging tasks is getting newly minted multi-millionaires to actually care if they win or lose games.

Just teasing Sr. MLB number one in my book, but what a shame it's sold much of its soul. Hardly watched any of the Play-Offs because couldn't figure out where to find a particular game on the dial. Pathetic.
"win or lose games"? The perils of the franchise system. As so many US Prem owners are finding out.

I see the Norn Irn are getting their tubers in a twist over some subtitles on Countryfile.
Scottish people are regularly subtitled on programmes all over the UK. Get over it.

Not very nice though super is it? being subtitled when you're already speaking english.

Bill Cosby seems to be getting the 'ol "sex offences from decades ago" routine over in the states, as per the many celebrities in Britain. Not saying he's innocent, but shouldn't there be some sort of time frame where these allegations are brought up, rather than when the accused is very old or dead??

Don't see the problem if the person speaking is so incomprehensible as the man in the clip was. It happens all the time. Rab C Nesbitt used to be subtitled, Africans speaking in English are often subtitled. I don't see people crying about that.

Why are the Irish so sensitive about this? They are always so keen to claim persecution.

Indeed, roughly £300k per week. It's the length of contract that seems staggering to me. I assume he is the main thrower of the ball or the bestest hitter of the rounders?

I wouldn't mind being guaranteed nearly a third of a billion dollars in one contract.

jeez.

I am assuming this guys contract is not going to be a set 300k pw, dont they usually front or back load, and some may be performance related. I am not big on Baseball. It does seem to drag...which is strange as i really love Cricket. I do enjoy the NFL though.

Ray - Gears of capitalism in action. I've sat in meetings with major companies as they decide where to invest their marketing budget. (At times, even persuade them my way.) Live sport to a homogeneous and significant market segment still has (obviously) very strong appeal.

You need truly global distribution along with a product with similar global need/appeal to make the global "appeal" argument. Plenty of agents, I'm absolutely certain, try to make that work. Crack that code and you too will be a richer man.

Ben - Kwin is right that it's guaranteed. US football or hockey players hardly ever get this deal! There are some clauses to be sure ... but as long as this guy shows up somewhat sober and doesn't break the law (or too many laws!), he'll be in "high cotton" as they say here for the rest of his days. It's really hard to be really good at baseball, but if you are ...

Wasn't able to watch the Celtic Park action, but caught a very enjoyable Ireland (4) vs USA (1) game.
Brilliant run by Shane Long towards the end that end with a shot against the inside of the post - that boy has so much speed and power when he wants to use it. Must frustrate managers no end.
Good performance by ROI second XI against a shadow USA team. Entertaining, in a slightly less than competitive way; Robbie Brady and Pilkington looked good, and so did Christie - never seen him before - and McGoldrick.

I did catch the action at Celtic Park. In my opinion, England were good, Scotland passed quite well but for the first time I can recall the purported gulf in class actually appeared to be evident and the result didn't ever appear to be likely to be anything else. For Scotland, Robertson at left back was a notable high (at least going forward) while Downing (played out of his club position) was a bit of a low for England. Otherwise I thought England outclassed Scotland all over the pitch.

As a side note, I'm not sure whether it was simply due to positioning of microphones or the technicians adjusting the sensitivity/balance in the tech department but the England crowd appeared to be louder on TV pretty much throughout. As a result, and this is a tad purile I admit, but I did have a chuckle at the chants of "Are you Scotland in disguise?" by the English.

Barkley - raw talent, the ability to do something few others can. Unfortunately at the moment that seems to be either an opportunity creating flash of brilliance or an opportunity concedeing moment of stupidity. Enhancing one and eliminating the other is all about experience though.

Henderson - I'm not certain or convinced by him yet.

Barkley has potential and talent, i do not think he is at the level to be starting, as he has only been playing for Everton for just over a season. But he could be good. Henderson, was very good for Liverpool last season, not quite peaked this year but deserves to be in the squad. And we have a severe shortage of half decent players especially centre midfielders. I really rate the Ox though.

Not sure why people say Henderson was any good. Can someone offer a reason?

As for barkley, he has a good physique for his age but looks to be a bit of a donkey in terms of passing and keeping the ball. It seems unlikely barkley will ever be as good as the young Arsenal English players.

what impresses me about Henderson is how well he reads the game. When he's playing well he's neat and tidy on the ball, decent defender, decent pace, but his real strength is he very very rarely plays the wrong option. Great energy too.

Unfortunately this season he's not playing so well, whether it's because Liverpool are struggling a bit and he's down on confidence, or whether he's suffering a bit from burn-out after a long season (his first really full season as a first choice starter) and the WC just after giving him a shorter time to recover, I don't know. Hopefully he gets back to last year's levels, because IMO if he can he's definitely in England's best XI.

Barkley I'm not totally convinced by right now, but yeah there's potential there.

westi,
I missed the last few minutes but Given went all the way at least thru 85 mins; made some superb saves too. And he had to because Clark and Pearce played as if they'd never met each other before and Meyler went thru spells where it looked as if he'd never complete a pass to an Irish player again.

I too like Henderson, but he looks as if he could do with a break - must be difficult to play in that Liverpool team right now and I wouldn't pick him for England again until he regains his confidence. And: What's the point of picking Downing and then playing him out of (his new) position? Daft.

Mac,
Do you mean the "young Arsenal English players" or the young Saints?

Good to see Shay get a run out, even at 38.

Clarke isn't great to say the least.

Never confident when he is on the team sheet at Villa.

Would love to see Drennan make the grade, but wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't.

Three young Saints there anyway.
Add Bale and Lallana, plus their present crop, add Terry Paine, Mick Channon and Chivers, and you'd have quite a team.

But crucially they currently play for Arsenal, so when labeling them it makes sense to refer to them as arsenal players. The key point is that they are all better players than gerrerd 2.0 (Barkley).

Lallana is not young though is he! I do not see anything in Chambers, i can see why Clyne kept him out the saints team last season. Good to see that Arsenal produced two of the 6 mentioned. And even then Kieran Gibbs, is not that good, and Jack Wilshire, is good but his career has not really taken off. Remember when Arsenal played Barcelona and Pep was asked about wilshire, he declared him nothing special and they have many of his type in the B team coming through.

I think Lallana is seriously over rated. Pretty footwork, some nice turns and flicks, but generally too light weight and little output. If you're going to be lightweight in midfield you need to have the ability of a Modric and consistently deliver.

Didn't think Clyne looked very good, mind you in a relative sense, all UK teams are a pretty poor standard. No team would be looking at that match last night and be worried about either team.

Add Bale and Lallana, plus their present crop, add Terry Paine, Mick Channon and Chivers, and you'd have quite a team.

Don't forget Luke Shaw and Alan Shearer.

Didn't think Clyne looked very good, mind you in a relative sense, all UK teams are a pretty poor standard. No team would be looking at that match last night and be worried about either team.

I tend to agree with you super. The current England team is pretty mediocre; the world cup demonstrated this. Just because the team has won 6 games in a row against minnows like San Marino and Scotland doesn't suddenly make them world beaters.

However I was glad that they out-classed Scotland last night. Not because I dislike Scotland but because it illustrated the gulf in class between England and the other home nations. The current England team are relatively weak for a country that should realistically expect to progress to quarter final stages of major tournaments. They are still miles ahead of the also-rans in world football.

I mean;

Kieran Gibbs
Jack Wilshere
Theo Walcott
Oxlade-Chamberlain
Welbeck
Chambers

Of those I think the only close comparison with Barkley might be Wilshire (ie middle of park,) and whilst Wilshere is perhaps more established/complete at the moment (although only recently) my own personal opinion is that Barkley has more talent. I realise that going on and proving you're a better player in the end is the difficult bit and Barkley has 1 or 2 years to be where Wilshere is now (ie he's younger).

Yup, add Shaw, Shearer and LeTiss for sure. And Nicky Holmes!
Others made their mark elsewhere first.
Still fancy Ward Prowse to do something - brilliant dead-ball delivery.

The England team is nothing special at the moment, the cupboard is almost bare though. We have some decent youngsters though, and played a relatively young team yesterday. Though I do not think many England fans have high expectations, and are just happy to see England beat who we can.
