The Last Film watched (CONTAINS STAR WARS SPOILERS!!)
First topic message reminder :
Quite enjoyed rec 3 although it's not really much to do with the first 2 films.
If it had been a standalone film, I think the critical response would have been better. For me it was really entertaining.

Must track that one down, heard a lot of good things about it. I kind of lose interest when the franchise gets to X-19: The Search for Wolverine's Claw, but if this last one is as good or better than the early ones then I'm in.lfc91 wrote:X men: Days of future past. Watched 'In the Line of Fire' agian over the weekend. John Malkovich + Clint Eastwood = Classic.

COFFEY - tried watching the "blacksploitation classic" again but got bored very quickly, fast forwarded to Pam Grier's t!ts then deleted it from my hard-drive. Lesson learned.
Next up Fifty Shades of Grey...

IMO it is well worth the watch. Very good story line, well acted (not surprising with some of the actors on show) and obviously very good visual effects to boot!

Jimmy Stewart, great in just about everything from light screwball comedies to dark, bitter, vengeful material. Best of all in Anthony Mann's five Western collaborations. In those five movies you learned quickly that Stewart was no mild mannered, stammering and awkward family man.

Shame, that's my best Jimmy Stewart impression. Also saw Bones from Star Trek on an episode of Bonanza last week. Immediately did my best "Dammit Jim, I'm a Doctor" impression for my wife...who then f*cking tells me she's never seen Star Trek. What a waste!!!!!!!!SecretFly wrote:Rowley wrote:I watched Rope by Hitchcock last night. Lovely stuff. Well, the acting bit - let's say nobody kinda worries about Shakespeare or Oscars in that particular film. They just took the money and ran. And who'd blame them?

Watch her seduce Bond on the train.... now if that isn't one of the best scenes in any Bond movie then I've lost my knowledge both of fine acting and great cinema moments. A real film Noire smoothness and style.

unsurprisingly, and as in most things, I disagree with Azzy on this: Eva Green is definitely hot! Slightly worryingly that means I agree with SecretFly, but one can't have everything
Anyway, watched Edge of Tomorrow today. It's the one where Tom Cruise keeps dying only to find himself back at the start of the day he dies, as the humans try to fight off an Alien invasion. All in all, a good watch, maybe a bit slow to get going, but I think it finds a good balance between the action, and delving a bit into how you would feel to constantly watch your companions die over and over, while getting frustrated at not making any progress. The two leads deliver pretty good performances, and the romance is - rather pleasingly IMO - kept to a strict minimum.
Very watchable, fun flick 7.5/10

I didn't like interstellar. It was far too long, far too up itself and lacked coherence of thought. An ambitious movie but for me it didn't work.
Saint, careful or galted may actually cut out your eyes or something. People should cut galted some slack though, if nothing else for seeing through the massive awfulness that is Drive.

Funny bits in Interstellar:
McConaughey's drawl. Now I love me a laconic drawl but Matthew, sir, you're no Henry Fonda on a veranda perch, son. I knew Henry Fonda sir, and you're no Henry Fonda
That Special Nasa site in the desert. Now let me get this straight.... the boardroom? Where the important intelligent people first met McConaughey and started laughing at him (a nice intro to be sure to be sure). That boardroom looked like it was right next door - right next door! - to where the rocket was being prepped for launch???? So bye, bye monthly meeting minutes and all attendees when that thing eventually took off?
How to communicate with someone the other side of a bookcase in another dimension? Try morse code, try braille, try Egyptian Hieroglyphics, try cooking up a sand storm to do some binary stuff on the floor - but don't never try to communicate the only thing worth communicating with any of those methods... "It's Me! Your dad, caught in an extra dimension. Help!"

Think I may have mentioned previously that the book by James Sallis is excellent yet the film is terribly disappointing.Mike Selig wrote:I didn't like interstellar. It was far too long, far too up itself and lacked coherence of thought. An ambitious movie but for me it didn't work.

It's one of those films that after reading the book you think, I wish they'd make this into a film then wish they hadn't.
There's any number of books I'd love/hate to see adapted for the cinema. Tim Willocks' "Green River Rising" being one along with "Pale Horse Coming" by Steven Hunter. Hunter's Bob Lee Swagger stuff (one was made into a terrible film starring Mark Wahlberg) is great and but the lead character is in his 60's (Scott Glenn would be perfect). Pale Horse Coming is about Swagger father, Earl....love it!!

Saw Avengers: Age of Ultron last night and thought it was fantastic. Must admit I'm a bit of a Marvel nerd, but Avengers 2 will take some beating.
I also saw Furious 7 last week, film was a little unrealistic at times, but the tribute to Paul Walker brought a tear to my eye.

You're right to warn him, Mike. My vengeance when people are duped into liking rubbish is biblical, just ask my Sixth Sense-loving mate One-Legged Rob.
It is upsetting though that the last 3 films I watched were worse than Drive(l).

Oh dear me the sixth sense... A simply terrible terrible film, which relies on the famous "twist" (which everybody now knows, whether they've seen the film or not, and as a result of which now every single bl00dy film thinks it has to try to get you with a "clever" "surprise" towards the end of the film). And then when you watch it knowing the twist it is just a terrible terrible film WHICH MAKES NO SENSE. The whole things MAKES NO SENSE. And it's terrible. Did I mention how terrible it is? (*)
(*) It's not the worst film of all time to be fair. It's just very very bad.

Perfectly summed up. Incredibly though Now You See Me manages to better it for sheer stupidity of twists. Whereas Sixth Sense was just an embarrassing twist NYSM's actually provokes anger.

I saw Avengers: Age of Ultron last week.
It's a Marvel film. It is full of fantastic effects, big stunts, superheroes, special powers, explosions and amusing one-liners. However, being a Marvel film, it is based on a Comic Book story, and the storyline is a bit... dull and predictable.
I am not saying it's a bad film - far from it - it's just that Marvel films (with the exception of Guardians of the Galaxy, which I liked a LOT) nowadays are getting a bit "samey" - you know pretty much what's going to happen throughout the film: Success, problems, personal issues, something going wrong, heroes hiding secrets, heroes struggling how to fix it then all of a sudden through the explosions and CGI there's a breakthrough and everyone's back home in time for tea and the superheroes are everyone's favourite weirdos again.
I would love to say 10/10 but it's not good enough for that. 7/10

Re: The Last Film watched (CONTAINS STAR WARS SPOILERS!!)
Watched a few films over the weekend. My least favourite was Eastern Promises. Despite Viggo Mortensen's performance, the film didn't hold my interest.
Also watched Boyhood. Although it didn't live up to the critics hype, it was pretty enjoyable. The strange think about the movie is the boy who the film is based around is the least interesting character in his family. His sister is more interesti, and is written more consistently throughout the 12 year period the film was based.
The best film I saw over the Bank holiday was Network. Absolute classic.

Mordeci or whatever it is called, the Johnny Depp film. Quite possibly the worst film I have seen in quite some time. The comedy does not work, there is not enough action for it to be considered an action film and it is all held together by one of those quirky performances from Johnny Depp that have not in any way got tired by now. Avoid like the plague.

I walked out half way through the film at the cinema. Utter rubbish.
I saw Kingsman the following week which is still my favourite film of the year.

Cheers, will delete from my hard drive before watching. Caught "Columbiana" on Film4 at the weekend. Young girl is present at the slaughter of her family and grows up to be an assassin who seeks revenge on the person who ordered it. Basically "Leon" but with an older female lead (although, almost unbelievably, with even smaller breasts than a 12yr old Natalie Portman!!!)

Depp........... the most overvalued, overrated, under-talented, over-confident, over-indulged (by dumb directors) actor of his era.
Jim Carrey does through his career all that Depp has attempted to do with infinitely more thought, texture, tonality, timing and talent; - quirky, comic, queasy, unsettling, menacing, theatrical, ambiguous, frightening, serious. Carrey is who Depp would like to be but never had the range.
Only my fallible opinion of course

My guess is that the pound saver would be heartier, tastier, and more genuinely popular. But you go to posh restaurants to be 'seen' eating posh of course, not because you want real food.

I'd much prefer Jamie's "real" food. A toss of this, a few fingers of that, a drizzle of the other and a few leaves spluttered there to maybe make it look a bit better. It doesn't matter what he cooks, I always want to eat it. Can't really say that about any other 'celebrity' chef since my personal favourite Keith Floyd, who wasn't really a chef at all, just a lowly cook.

It doesn't matter what he cooks, I always want to eat it. Can't really say that about any other 'celebrity' chef since my personal favourite Keith Floyd, who wasn't really a chef at all, just a lowly cook.

Oh I do hate me the Measurement'n'Fuss cooks with their little silly glass bowls around them of perfectly weighed spring onions and salt grains
"three and a quarter salt grains for this recipe, guys..... if you can't find the right weighing scales in a shop you could try the Connoisseurs Bazar in Eastern Mongolia. They have a fine selection of Salt Weighing Scales for small amounts. You'd get one for three grand easily".
