Is there any particular reason why teams are allowed to use their own set of footballs? Surely just having one big batch of them, monitored by the refs, would stop anyone tampering with them.

If you got a lot at stake in a one off game (including $$$$) and you have access to a set of footballs you know will be used during the game by your team, you'll look at any way of getting an advantage.

They don't get to use their 'own' set of balls. There are a set scrutinised beforehand and then split between the teams. Each team can prepare the balls the way they want - scuffing off the brand new veneer for QB's and receivers to make them easier to catch, setting up specific balls for the punter and kicker etc. - and that teams allocated balls are used when they are on offense. It's been this way for years without issue, and I doubt they will change the procedures for one incident, unless there is proof tampering is widespread, which I don't believe anyone is saying with any specifics.
