PAOK v Bordeaux
PAOK tactics;
Bordeaux tactics;
Both sides were strong for today's game, I felt both would score goals despite strong presences in midfield, both sides have great attackers and it led to a very entertaining score draw. Cannot separate the sides, I feel Bordeaux will be happier as they are missing Alonso but in Brahimi and Narsingh out wide they have players who create chances for Aguero. PAOK have gamechangers in Robben and Mandzukic and even the Bordeaux defence can't keep them quiet. Sometimes teams just cancel each other out.
PAOK 2-2 Bordeaux
(Robben, Mandzukic) (Aguero x2)

Bremen v Genk
Bremen tactics;
Genk tactics;
I think the midfield battle was a lot closer than I expected it to be, with Rode/Maher/Gundogan against Mavuba/Lampard/Diame I'd even suggest Bremen won the midfield battle. However going forward I felt Genk's superior attacking options created more opportunities, even though Bremen had more possession and a better defence and midfield, they were unable to capitalise on these advantages to earn the win. Genk on the other hand need to improve their defence if they're to launch a title challenge. It's a tough draw on Bremen who probably edged it but the Genk quality upfront saved them from defeat, something Bremen need to work on.
Bremen 1-1 Genk

Twente v Verona
Twente tactics;
Verona tactics;
As Verona didn't show up, Twente get the default win, despite posting tactics that didn't include a teamsheet. Those Austrian drug fuelled threesomes must be getting to him.
Twente 2-0 Verona
(Calhanoglu, Tevez)
-----------------
Basel v Granada
Basel tactics;
Granada tactics;
I felt the system of Basel worked well for them, 4-2-3-1 is becoming a bit generic but it's the best system for the Basel players, and on the flip side I'm not a fan of Granada's 3-3-3-1, I don't mind seeing new systems but I felt Xavi was too advanced and Sanchez out of position behind the striker when he's a winger or striker in my opinion. It led to Basel taking the lead through Adriano, and Granada's gamechangers were being neutralized. Despite Basel changing to a 5-4-1 to hang on for the win, I felt Granada were much better balanced when they went 4-4-2, and got their reward through Kane. A 1-1 draw was the outcome, but points dropped for Granada who had the players to win but didn't have the gameplan to match.
Basel 1-1 Granada

Team Talk: First game of the season against Bordeaux who are missing playmaker Alonso and striker Sakho. We are playing a counter attack system using the pace of our wingers to hurt the opposition. I want midfield to get the ball up quickly to our attackers as soon as possible. Aguero is the man to watch let's starve the service to him and if he does get the ball both CB work as a defensive unit to stop him, one pressures him while the other covers.
DEFENSIVE TACTICS
Playing a deeper line as we're playing counter attack, this limits the space in behind Aguero can run onto. When they get the ball out wide u want my FB to position themselves where they are forced to come inside that's where our CM will come and block them off. Stones & Barzagli will take turns picking up Aguero depending who is closest, don't get too tight as he likes to turn, try and cover the goal minimising his target. Matic get around the pitch, using your power and strength to dominate the midfield. Grenier also help with cutting of passes and following your runner. Kruse to sit on top of their DM (Alonso replacement) to slow down to passes and attacks.
ATTACKING TACTICS
When we're on the ball FB to stay wide giving us width and get constant crosses for Mandzukic and Kruse to attack. Robben and Menez will come inside overloading the Bordeaux defence, Robben cut inside and shoot while Menez looks to use his speed making runs between RB and CB. Mandzukic hold the ball up keep it simple with pass and move, Kruse make runs off Mandzukic who will knock balls on. Matic & Grenier keep it simple with passes, we're not playing a build up game, get quick passes into the wingers.
Bordeaux tactics;

-----------Lucas ---Krychowiak
Narsingh ------Praet ----------Brahimi

Subs: Jug,Gabriel,Bellerin,El Ghazi,Guedes,Drogba,Ayoze
Team Talk - Up against Afro who has a very strong squad overall and shall look to just get on the front foot and look to utilize our pace throughout the front 4. Shall make the most of Ogbonna being injured.
Defensive Tactics
- Varane to get tight to Mandzukic and look to push him away from the goal, If Mandzukic manages to turn Varane the Manolas to use his pace to get back at him
- Manolas to watch for Kruse getting forward and look to cut the supply into Mandzukic out.
- Arbeloa to stop Menez from cutting inside and look to force him down the line, Lucas to double up if he cuts inside.
-Tremoulinas to force Robben down the line as he just cuts inside all the time. Krychowiak to cut him off if he does.
- If the full backs come up the pitch then the DM's will double up taking the winger cutting in.
- Lucas/Krychowiak to double up with the full backs on the wingers so Full Backs take the wing & DM's cover the cut inside
- Krychowiak to sit and marshall infront on the defense and get close to Kruse when the ball is inside. Lucas to get close to Grenier when in possession.
Attacking Tactics
- Lucas to sit and spray the passes outwide to the wingers and look to get forward towards Matic to double up on him.
- Narsingh to use his pace to utilize the space as Bernat is going up the pitch and whip the ball in the box
- Brahimi to look to cut inside of the left and drift about Matic to open the space for Praet. If he doesn't come then slide the ball in behind for Aguero or take a shot
-Praet to sit in the pocket and look to play slide rule passes between the full backs and CB's for the pacey from 3 to get in behind, If Matic tries to mark you out then drop deeper
- Aguero to make runs in the channels between full back and CB's to expose the back up CB with his pace. If they try to get close to Aguero then look to roll them in behind and make runs to the front post at crosses.
Subs: Praet for Ayoze after 70 mins if losing, Gabriel for Praet after 85 mins if winning

Bremen v Genk
Bremen tactics;
- Spoiler:
- We know that Genk are going to be strong today but we are at home so by no means are we going to lie down and give in to them.
I want us to be patient but careful in possession, our defence is good enough to take most pressure and we will need you to all be on your toes today especially against a side like Genk.
-----------------Wolf----------------
Carvajal – Terry – Martinez – Cole
----------------Rode-----------------
---------Maher------Gundogan----
Kishna-------------------------Buffel
----------------Vietto-----------------
Player instructions:
Wolf – The box is your command centre, look to come out and catch the ball from set pieces to relieve pressure on the defence, play the ball out from the back.
Carvajal and Cole – Your job today is to watch the wide areas for runs cutting inside and outside, even without Son in the Genk team today we need to be cautious of this. Make covering runs around the back of the centre backs to provide extra support. We need you to move forward in a careful and efficient way by looking to provide an option mainly out wide to spread the pitch to our advantage.
Martinez and Terry – Terry you will be man marking Ibrahimovic if he is playing as your physical presence will be required to keep him quiet. Martinez you will cover with your pace, especially if Lacazette is playing as he is pacey and will need to be contained. Look to play out from the back and use the ball carefully but efficiently.
Rode – If Lacazette is playing up top I want you to sit on him all game and look to cause him problems, don’t let him out of your sight and don’t let him turn and run as he is extremely quick. When we are attacking I want you to sit and hold your position incase they break away from our attacks I want you to be there for support to our defence.
Gundogan – You will be playing in a more advanced role beyond Rode and in behind Maher I want you to push on and look to play the killer pass. You will also need to be on your toes and get back and help defensively as we could get exploited if people are out of position.
Maher – I have set the team up today to allow you to float in behind Vietto in a central number 10 type role. I want you to make darting runs across the central defenders to distract them and look to play the killer pass if the option is there. You will have support from the wide areas and from Gundogan who will be playing just off you.
Buffel and Kishna – You will both need to work really hard today getting up and down the wings and really putting a shift in. You will need to look to cut inside and slip a pass into Vietto.
Vietto – Big game for you today, there may be times during the game where things go quiet for you but I want you to work hard and really look to exploit the defender you are sitting on the shoulder of who is likely to be Caceres, look to use your pace and slip past him. I want you to look to dominate that area of the pitch and be unplayable throughout.
Injuries: Richard Strebinger, Aleksander Stevanovic, Arkadiusz Milik.
Subs: Di Santo on for Vietto 85th Minute.
Kroos on for Rode – 87th Minute.
Makiadi on for Maher – 90th Minute.

TACTICS
We need to get another win today and get some momentum going, we want to have a serious go at the title. We are going to attack them from the off. Look to pass the ball with purpose, always looking forward rather than taking our time playing tiki-taka, with the full backs having license to push on at every opportunity. When we defend, our main job should be isolate Vietto and starve him of support.
PLAYER ROLES
De Sanctis - Don't let them score. Distribute short.
Caceres/Dier - Vietto will probably be their main striker, Dier should match him for pace and look to rough him up as he isn't the strongest. You should be able to match him for pace. Caceres should sweep in behind.
Aurier/Digne - Keep the wingers out wide, get narrow on the edge of the box if necessary. Just don't let them cut in, we can deal with crosses. When we have the ball you have the freedom to provide us with the width, get forward at every opportunity and cross it.
Mavuba - Sit and hold the midfield, protect the back four and look to pass the ball neatly. When they have the ball, protect that general area. Maher will need to be watched.
Diame - Provide the drive in our midfield, in a box to box role. Use your physicality to prevent Gundogan having any influence on the game, be in his face all the time as they will try to create everything through him.
Lampard - Also box to box, try to make sneaky late runs into the box and take shots from range. Also look to pick out a pass. Be aware you don't have the legs you used to but Mavuba/Diame do, you will be subbed off anyway.
Honda - Free role behind the strikers, you are a good creative player so look to drift into wider positions to get onto the ball, or get some space in the hole between their midfield and defense.
Ibrahimovic - Bully their defenders, beat them in the air, show that bit of trickery to make something happen. I want you back with a vengeance after resting you last week.
Lacazette - Use your pace to make runs across the defense, get in behind. Particularly look to run at Terry who isn't quick and try to drag players out of position for the rest of the team to exploit.
SUBSTITUTIONS
If winning - Diaz for Lampard, fresh energy into midfield. Aarons for one of the strikers if still winning late on, play with two proper wingers out wide.
If drawing - Wilson for Lampard. Play with three strikers, Honda in midfield.
If losing - Lascelles, Wilson, Aarons for Lampard, Digne, Aurier. Go into an all out attack 3-4-3 with Honda/Aarons wide.
Bremen 1-1 Genk

Twente v Verona
Twente tactics;
- Spoiler:
- Verona will be a very tough test for us but if we stick to our natural game we should be able to get the win. Keep the ball to feet with swift short passes, retaining possession, constant movement to exploit spaces and punish when it counts.
Rafael - command your area, stay big for one on ones and distribute to the fullbacks or midfielders.
Pepe/Subotic - Pepe to mark their striker, use your strength to position yourself to the ball ahead of him. Subotic to be the spare man who gets to the second ball first, unless they play two strikers in which case both man mark.
Siqueira/Rafinha - Force their wingers out wide, don't let them cut inside and block any crosses at source. In possession get forward and support our wingers, offer them the overlap and get crosses into the box. Track back ASAP to prevent us being countered.
Suarez/Rakitic - Suarez without the ball sit and break up play, get stuck in and frustrate their midfielders, but with the ball look to create opportunities for your teammates. Rakitic the box to box man, with licence to get forward, support the attack but help Suarez out defensively when under pressure. Shoot when the opportunity arises.
Costa/Hazard - Use your pace to get at the fullbacks, cut inside with your fullback overlapping and either supply them or pass or shoot infield. Link with Tevez and Calhanoglu and create opportunities for yourself and others.
Calhanoglu/Tevez - Calhanoglu AM, link the play between Tevez, Hazard, Costa and the midfielders and fullbacks. Shoot when you get the chance but look for Tevez making runs and slip the ball in behind the defence. Tevez to stay on the shoulder of the last defender. Look for low crosses coming in and direct them on goal. Both of you to work hard without the ball to close down defenders/midfielders.

Basel v Granada
Basel tactics;
- Spoiler:
- -------------------------------Casillas------------------------------
-------Clyne--------Mexes------------Martins Indi-----Gaya------
-----------------------Elneny---------Guarin-----------------------
---Quaresma---------------dos Santos-----------------Meyer----
-------------------------------Adriano------------------------------
Subs: Salvi, Suchy, Pocognoli, Umana, Ajeti, Adili, Adebayor.
-Casillas uses his experience to keep the defence organised, Clyne and Gaya both tuck in to make it difficult to get through the middle but go forward more when attacking. Mees uses his experience and physical presence to mark the striker and BMI sweepsup in behind, communicating with Casillas.
-Elneny holds in the middle and looks to cover when the full backs go forward down the line making it a 3 at the back when we have possession. Guarin is the playmaker in deep positions, spreading the passes into wide areas and looking for passes over the top for the wingers and Adriano to run onto. He must close down if we lose the ball to hold up the attack.
-Quaresma and Mayer hug the touchline when we have the ball to create gaps in the defence so our full backs can run past them and into them gaps. Quality low crosses for Adriano in the box. dos Santos looks to move the DM about to Guarin can move into more advanced positions and wants to run into the gaps that the wingers create. Link up & create chances for Adriano to get in behind the defence.
-Adriano wants to drop an extra 5 yards to force the CB out of position and to spin off when balls get played through to him over the top or trough on goal. Use his pace to get in behind. When through on goal, take the ball around the goalkeeper at every opportunity for an easy finish, if not, then just slot them away into the corner. Get in front of his marker from crosses to get an attempt in at goal and play neat one-two's with dos Santos and then get in behind.
-OVERALL: Look to keep the ball and dominate at home. Have the initiative when going forward and put them under pressure at every opportunity and take the game to our opponents.
Set Pieces (A) - dos Santos, each side and corners
Set Pieces (D) - Mexes in our own half
Subs (if winning) 70 mins:
Adebayor for Adriano - Same stuff, fresh legs on a tired defence
Umana for dos Santos - Into CB, 5-4-1, sit in and hang on for the win
Subs (if drawing) 70 mins:
Adebayor for dos Santos - Go 4-4-2 (diamond) and give their CB's something different to think about
Adili for Guarin - Be the force in AM on tired DM's legs, Quaresma and Meyer RM and LM
Subs (if losing) 70 mins:
Adebayor for Gaya - Go to 3-5-2 with 2 ST's on a tired defence
Umana for Clyne - Go into the 3 at the back and be the ball playing CB
Adili for Quaresma - Give us a different outlook on the RW to run at a tired LBH, Elneny just holds in the midfield, Guarin pushes further forward.
Granada tactics;
- Spoiler:
- Granada starting line-up:
------------------ Buffon
--------- Jedvaj - Vlaar – Alderweireld
Ivanovic ------ Coquelin ----------- Durm
---------- Xavi - Sanchez - Motta
------------------ Kane
Subs: Stekelenburg, Veltman, Jedvaj, Marrone, Streller, di Natale, Zivkovic
Injuries: Fabinho, Diego Buonanotte, Adam Ljajic
General:
We had a great start to the season when beating Bremen last week – I want you to build on that result today to make other teams take note of our intent. As with last week I expect you to work hard, talk to each other and play as a unit. No man gets left behind. Our opponents today, Basel, have a new manager and will be eager to win the game themselves – you need to be up for every challenge, in for every header, and ready to exploit any weakness they show us. Their midfield and attack aren’t the most physical though – here is where we can win the game so get stuck into them, show them you’re up for a fight. They will miss Blind and Dybala so don’t let their replacements settle at all, make sure they are put under pressure from the get-go.
Defensive Tactics:
- Back three to marshal the striker, whether it be Adriano or Adebayor. I want Vlaar to man-mark him using your strength and positioning to keep him quiet.
- Jedvaj will patrol the right side of defence, teaming up with Ivanovic to keep any wingers out wide. Same for Alderweireld on the left, I want you to work with Durm to stop any wingers cutting inside.
- Coquelin will sit ahead of them patrolling, getting physical with their AM and working with Xavi and Motta to ensure that the opposition CMs have no time on the ball.
Attacking Tactics:
- Kane to play the leading role, I want you to use your strength and positional sense to slip past the ageing Mexes and into space. Sanchez will play off you in a free role so make sure you are always in a position to receive a pass.
- Sanchez is to have a free role, allowing him to drift into space, then get on the ball and attack the defence. With Xavi and Motta breaking out, Kane ahead of you and Ivanovic and Durm out wide, Basel cannot contain you – do what you do best, use your pace to break past your man and get shots on goal.
- Ivanovic and Durm are to provide outlets out wide. Use them – both can cross well for Kane and Sanchez.
Sub:
If losing on 75 minutes: di Natale and Zivkovic on for Motta and Jedvaj. Focus on doubling up on full backs and putting crosses into the box for the two strikers.
---------------------- Buffon
Ivanovic - Alderweireld - Vlaar - Durm
Sanchez ----- Xavi -- Coquelin--- Zivkovic
------------- di Natale ---- Kane
I felt the system of Basel worked well for them, 4-2-3-1 is becoming a bit generic but it's the best system for the Basel players, and on the flip side I'm not a fan of Granada's 3-3-3-1, I don't mind seeing new systems but I felt Xavi was too advanced and Sanchez out of position behind the striker when he's a winger or striker in my opinion. A 1-1 draw was the outcome, but points dropped for Granada who had the players to win but didn't have the gameplan to match.
Basel 1-1 Granada

You mean Alexis Sanchez, that player who's been playing RW all season for Arsenal? While Ozil/Ramsey play centrally? Him?

Still, a winger. Every time I've seen any line-up for a live Arsenal game he's been RW.

Regardless of where his 'official' position is, Sanchez regularly sits centrally, and has scored quite a few goals from central too. He's so far from a bog-standard winger as you can get. It's like saying Phil Neville was a LB.

Still think he's wasted behind the striker.
Unfortunately my opinion doesn't count when it comes to results, oh wait, hang on...
