Best of the Rest.
Greetings Hoes of the boxing world
Can you please list your top 20 fighters for the following decades. Failing that, we need numbers 11-20 of your top 20. Just going to play around with a few ideas.
The decades in question are, 70's, 80's,90's and 00's.
Cheers
Shah

I thought about Holmes but Norton and Shavers 1 were 78/79...........and I thought Witherspoon beat him.....
He's certainly close..
But the rest of your list isn't something I'd disagree too much with........

Re: Best of the Rest.
He went 84 to 90 unbeaten................Rosario was a wonderful win...........
I picked Edwin..........
Think Sal maybe higher on your list...............Gomez, Nelson....Two greats....and a top fighter in Lopez twice.........
May be a bit better than Pryor...
But it's splitting hairs..

Arguello, Galaxy and Pryor are all on the cusp but think the former did just enough to sneak top ten for the 80's.

Re: Best of the Rest.
Yes Haz. Haha. I need the best of the rest list because I want to gauge the strengths in depth in each of the four decades and create enough threads to cover a broad set of skills, styles and knowledge.
Re: Best of the Rest.
Always been split on the 80's Truss, consider it the decade when America finally started to reclaim dominance below light heavyweight. The 70's wasn't bad but seeing Monzon, Napoles, Duran, Cervantes, Locche, Arguello and the rest of the world dominating meant that Hagler, Hearns, Leonard and co stopping the rot was massive.

Couldn't have Pedroza above Nelson...........Nelson wiped out Gomez in 84..............Better win by itself than Pedroza ever achieved......Plus a 130 title chucked in !!
I'd have Nunn higher also...............Tate, Kalambay were cracking wins.........Chuck in his other five defences to the pot..
Suppose it's about your thoughts on longevity v quality.....
Splitting heirs really...........
Rosario top 20 though for me perhaps.............Won the title three times.................Bramble, Davis jr, Ramirez..and a contentious Camacho battle...

Tough, tough, tough. Loads of placings I could switch over or deliberate on and I'd come up with a different order tomorrow, no doubt. Just missing out are the likes of Holyfield, Trinidad, Calderon, Toney, Holmes, Marquez etc. Hopefully I haven't forgotten an obvious name.

Tyson is a cert for both the 80's and 90's era.
How so called boxing fans have him outside the top 2 in each is beyond me.

Unfortunately Tyson is behind Larry Big Pants in my Heavyweight estimations, OneTwo. A shade behind Lewis as well, possibly. That's not to mention Foreman. As it's arguable whether or not he even gets on the medal podium at Heavyweight in the past forty-five years I cannae accept that he's a nailed on top two across all weights.
Lads, I know that as I've stirred up OneTwo's ire and made him mad this could well be my last post on here. If I should mysteriously disappear, it's been a pleasure.

They'll never get taz. If they couldn't find him after the JFK assassination, they're not going to get him for this. Besides, word is he teamed up with hong king phooey to hijack a Malaysian airliner.... currently being modified for time travel in an underwater volcano in the Indian Ocean

Re: Best of the Rest.
Let me have a go at the 70s, my equivalent of Truss's misty-eyed affection for the 80s. I've tried to keep it to those whose deeds really shone in that decade, so no place for Ray Leonard for example, although I accept that he won his first crown at the very end of the 70s.
1) Monzon 2) Duran 3) Ali 4) Napoles 5) Foster 6) Arguello 7) Zarate 8) Canto 9) Foreman 10) Olivares 11) Frazier 12) Wilfredo Gomez 13) Ohba 14) Galindez 15) Jofre 16) Danny Lopez 17) Cervantes 18) De Jesus 19) Benitez 20) Buchanan
Slightly controversial number 20, perhaps, but you'll excuse an ageing fan his partiality, I'm sure!
Probably should have included Holmes, but he splits two decades more exactly than most, so it's tough on him.

We both share a high regard for Galindez............
If I recall there were a few posters on here who had Conteh higher....
Can't fault your list..........Though think that Foreman, Frazier twice, Norton twice, Quarry, Shavers, Lyle and Young would be much better victories than Monzon and Duran acquired in the 70s.........
Splitting hairs......

Re: Best of the Rest.
80s is probably the most difficult.
1) Leonard 2) Spinks 3) Chavez 4) Hagler 5) Hearns 6) Sanchez 7) Holmes 8) Galaxy 9) Tyson 10) Nelson 11) Duran 12) McCallum 13) Pryor 14) Arguello 15) Whitaker 16) Fenech 17) Pedroza 18) Curry 19) Holyfield 20) Wilfredo Gomez
The very good flyweights, Laciar and Chitalada, miss out narrowly, as do Rosario, Saad (another whose briefish spell of greatness straddles two decades), Qawi and Nunn (brilliant fighter; if he hadn't split the 80s and 90s, he would certainly be here).

Re: Best of the Rest.
Think you're right about Ali's victories, Truss. To set beside them, though, we have losses to Norton and Spinks, which have to be taken into account, as well as the one against Frazier, for which he drops no house points at all.
Duran and Monzon basically lorded it over their divisions for about 8 years of the decade - Monzon didn't lose at all, seeing off Benvenuti, Griffith and Valdez twice each, as well as Briscoe and Napoles, among others, and never tasted defeat. Duran'e CV is similarly accomplished, but does contain the single black mark against De Jesus, which is all that separates the two for these purposes. Basically the two most accomplished fighters of the decade, for me, with Ali clear third best.

Re: Best of the Rest.
As far as Galindez is concerned, I'm guilty of a certain inconsistency here. If I'm asked to rank Galindez and Conteh as light-heavyweights, I have a habit of taking into account who I think was the better fighter, of which some part is given over to assessing how I think a fight between the two of them might have panned out. In that regard, I give Conteh the edge and tend to sit on the fence by giving them a more or less equal ranking.
However, if we're talking about achievements, or CV, within a time frame, 10 defences trumps three and Conteh's lapses against Parlov and Burnett finally tip the scales against him, seeing as Galindez's star burned for longer. Conteh wouldn't be a million miles off the top 20, certainly as far as ability is concerned. As I say, not that consistent really, but it contains a certain pretzel logic with which I'm comfortable!

Re: Best of the Rest.
Very close between Curry and Pedroza in terms of achievements. Curry the better reign, Pedroza the longer one. However, the 80s also saw the Don beaten by Rene Jacquot, which does have to weigh in the balance more than somewhat. Pedroza's losses to nobodies only started after he'd faded as a championship force; I have to give him the nod over a man who had it all, but slid so alarmingly when he still should have been at his peak.

Curry faded badly for sure.............But he was undisputed champ and a two weight champ.........I imagine many feathers could have beaten the guys Pedroza beat.....Best fighter he fought took his title..........Lockridge was decent but he lost two contentious decisions..............Taylor got a draw in a stinker...and Olivares was an old bantam......Never rated Laporte..
Pedroza wasn't even the best at that weight............
Not sure many welters could have beaten a young Starling and Mccrory back then...........
Overrated paper champion for me............but what do I know...
We all see different things..............and I am biased..

You're well entitled to that bias. As I say, it's close and I'm not going to argue too fiercely - might try this for the 1940s and see how I go. Off the top of my head, I'd start with Robinson, Charles, Pep, which is a scarily impressive top 3.
