That they wrote the article in the first place says it all really.
I have very little against Glasgow. Countries need industrial cities. For every London, Bath and York, you need a Hull, Sunderland and Slough. So it is in Scotland. The nasty bits make the nice bits even better.

That'll be why Glasgow University is 55 in the QS rankings, top 1% in the world, and Edinburgh is 17 in the same rankings then.
Poorly researched stuff from Glasgow, as you'd expect.

The article is clearly tongue in cheek.
Quite a few comments here rather support the view that the east coast needs to buy a sense of humour. No problem outsourcing 'being funny' to us. But you kids should feel free to strike out on your own at any time...

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread VII
If Glasgow are looking to bring in a top quality winger who wont be away during the international window then they should have a look at David Smith at Toulon.
He isn't being offered a new contract due to quotas being enforced on French teams where they have to have 60% of they playing squad coming from French club academies. He is top scorer in france with 12 tries from 13 games. Before that he was at the Western Force and the Blues where he had a great try scoring record. He is tied to New Zealand having played for New Zealand 7s so wont be away during the world cup or international window.
He isn't the biggest guy but is very powerful and is rapid. Must be one of the quickest accelerating players in world rugby. Would imagine his wages would be less than Maitlands and probably on par with DTH's.

Smith is an exceptional player and would be a massive asset to Glasgow. Very direct, low centre of gravity and pretty rapid. I'd be stunned if there weren't more wealthy suitors lining him up.

Agreed. He'll be on the minimum wage at Bath, but will magically own an enormous house on one of those Georgian Crescents with Bentley and driver sitting outside + "modest/in line with market" pension contributions.

There's one later on that mentions that they're both excellent cities and they are. There aren't many, if any places in the UK with 2 cities so close together that collectively offer so much. 40 minutes on the train to do something completely different.

RDW, genuinely the funniest thing I have read in ages.
Visser over DTH?
Fife over Tennessee Tam?
Anyone over Ickle Jonny?
If Brown hooks on Saturday and Kevin Bryce keeps improving at the current rate Mr Chinnhook may be getting splinters in his bum come the World Cup.
Tonks over Dancer the Finnocent
And our kebab shops are much more entertaining than yours. People dress for the occasion, apparently.

I reckon he could be a handy option to have although I'm not too sure he's international standard.
He plays well under Alan Solomons but I expect he'd do even better with more opportunity to play.
Put it this way, I'd take him over Beattie, Wilson, Strockosh, Low etc.

Coman is a good club player, gives his all and adds a lot to the team. Not an international player though; I'd place him in the same basket as Roddy Grant, Swinson, Fusaro, etc.Great for their club don't want them playing for Scotland.

He's become a solid squad player for Edinburgh - behind Denton, du preez and Watson but will still do a job for us.
He's only 27 too so in his prime.

I agree that Coman is good for Pro12 level but not a top class flanker but that really isn't the point.
At the moment guys like Harley and Gray Snr (before Toolis got good) etc know that they will start if they are fit. The more guys we have playing well at Pro12 or AP level in each position the more it forces the starting XV to improve.
Hogg is a great example of this. His form this year is polar opposite to last season mainly because Sir Gregor played Murchie in the playoffs. Hogg now knows that he plays well or he doesn't play.
Now, if we could only apply the same principle to scrum half...

We've got some news from #thepen to brighten up your Wednesday afternoon! Full details coming up shortly...
Anyone have any idea what this could be? Hoping for a world class signing but expecting just a young Scottish talent.

Coman is a journeyman, or in other words he wouldn't improve any team in the pro 12.

So, Frankie Boyle, Celtic and The Rangers v2 sectarian "banter", soggy vingar tasting chips and a vandalised statue are considered by Glaswegians as positives?

Interview with the Tiny Dancer in the Hootsmon:
Six Nations: Finn Russell relishes Scotland return
By Smithers Morrison
THERE were innumerable reasons why Scotland lost to Italy last time out but the fact that Finn Russell was sitting on the sofa at home and ranting at the television rather than doing anything more energetic must rank high amongst them.
The Scotland stand-off copped a ban for taking Dan Biggar out in mid-air during the Welsh match and, after an appeal was refused, he was forced to sit out that Italian thriller. He did not even attend the match, preferring to stay at home instead and, like millions of others, Russell couldn’t quite help himself from offering some unsolicited advice.
“I watched it on telly, I watched it at the house,” he says. “I had another weekend off, I just chilled out. It was pretty frustrating because watching it on telly you see a lot of things that you don’t see on the pitch. So I am saying, do this and do that, but on the pitch they don’t see everything. It’s easy for me sitting back watching it, it’s harder when you are out there.
“I wasn’t shouting too much, I was more just saying things like, ‘why don’t they do this’ or ‘why don’t they do that?’ But its easier when you are watching to say things like that.”
Russell is expected to take his place in the Scotland team that is bidding to avoid equalling the worst losing run in the long history of this competition. Ireland once lost 13 successive matches in Paris and Scotland have lost their last 12 matches in London. One more and they will match that unlucky 13.
If Scotland are to pull off an unlikely upset, they will need their young stand-off to pull out the performance of his career. Russell has shown glimpses of what he can do, a genuine all-round playmaker, good at finding the spaces behind what is sure to be a fast and flat English defence but, arguably happier attacking with the ball in hand. He is not the only young stand-off making his mark because England have their own “wunderkid” and the pair go way back.
George Ford and Finn Russell first faced off back in 2010 when the England under-20s trounced their Scottish counterparts 26-6 at Firhill… well, almost. With the game won, Ford left the action early to be replaced by Tom Heathcote (who was English in those days) before Russell had managed to set one foot on the field as a late replacement.
“I spoke to him briefly after the Bath [against Glasgow] game down there,” says Russell of his opposite number. “At under-20s he was the No 10 for England. I only got on for ten minutes so I never played [against] him at Firhill. So I have seen him play a bit. I don’t know him, I spoke to him briefly after the Bath game. He’s another young ten that is making his mark and establishing himself as the England ten. He is a quality player; playing against him and watching him play, his kicking game and his running game.
“I have played against him so I kind of know what he looks to do as he probably does with me I’d imagine. It’s just another game and he’s another ten and hopefully we can get on.”
Russell played alongside his two Glasgow amigos, Alex Dunbar and Mark Bennett in the opening two Six Nations rounds and the player waxes lyrical on how their club and social relationship has helped them gel at international level. He claims the understanding at times is almost intuitive. “You have an idea of what each other are going to do before they actually do it, you feed off them without having to call anything,” he said.
If there is one area that Scotland might yet spring a surprise on England it surely revolves around that Glasgow midfield axis, even if Edinburgh’s Matt Scott surely got a mention in selection. His muscular and intelligent work in defence could come in handy against the power of Luther Burrell and the footwork of Jonathan Joseph, the find of the tournament to date. But Bennett has looked threatening in attack throughout and Vern Cotter may feel that the Glasgow trio are worth another shout given the manner in which they ripped Bath apart at Scotstoun (Bath backs fill England’s ten, 13 and 14 shirts).
The other good news for a Glasgow-dominated back division is that England pick and choose when to compete at the breakdown.
Defence coach Andy Farrell wants players on their feet rather than burrowing into the breakdown, so the Scots should be able to build the phases, assuming they set up camp inside the England half. If the midfield can get the ball around or through an all-enveloping English rush defence then the visitors’ back three, with Sean Maitland presumably returned to duty, have the fire power to do some damage.
But all the straw-clutching in the world can’t change the simple fact that Scotland have to climb a near vertical mountain and they are equipped with flip flops rather than crampons, a point that Russell concedes.
“We will definitely be the underdogs at the weekend,” he states the glaringly obvious. “We haven’t won down there in 32 years so it’s quite a while. But I think that Scotland are underdogs quite a lot of the time when they play games.
“On the pitch it’s 15 against 15 and there is everything to play for. If we manage put in the performance that we know we can then we could get the result this week. If the bounce of the ball goes our way, then you never know.”
And if the stand-off is faced with another high ball and an opposite number who is airborne early?
“I will probably just run the other way!”

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread VII
It's not really related to rugby, but can I also draw everyone's attention to the article below and ask WTF goes on in some people's heads?
FES - you clearly missed a great opportunity to scar your daughter for life when choosing her name this year...Hiya, Twinkle and Spartacus among Scots baby names
DAVID O’LEARY, Hootsmon word monkey
HIYA, Spartacus and Twinkle were among the unique names given to babies born in Scotland last year.
The independence referendum also played its part, with more than two dozen babies named either Indy or Indie.
The names were revealed as the National Records of Scotland published a full list of all names given to babies whose birth was registered in 2014.
The number of births registered was up by 711 from the 2013 figure.
Two children, a boy and a girl, were named Freedom, 83 boys were called Scott, there were 180 Williams – the 35th most popular boy’s name – plus 135 Roberts (50th) and 163 Andrews.New First Minister Nicola Sturgeon also inspired new parents, with 21 Nicolas on the list, while Alex Salmond also caught the imagination, with 91 Alexs named , along with 32 Alasdairs and 154 Davids.
It would appear that uniqueness was the trend among parents, with 2,102 boy’s names and 2,894 unique girl’s names given to just one child.
Overall, some 56,725 babies were born last year, with Jack and Emily the most popular names.
Both a boy and a girl were called Fox by their parents, while Lake was given to one baby boy and one infant girl.
There was also a girl called Apple – the name given to Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow’s daughter – as well as a Peaches and a Berry. Some baby names could have been inspired by places, with girls named Rio and Texas born last year, as well as a boy called London.
Other unusual names given to boys included Atlas, Bear – the name Kate Winslet gave her youngest child – Diesel, Elvis, Mate, Sherlock, Spartacus, Steel and Thor.
There were also boys called R and T born in 2014, according to the list of names. However, the name of A is shared by two children.
Meanwhile, girls were given the names Bliss, Blossom, Hiya, Justice, Lullaby, Ocean, Peace, Precious, Princess, Sailor, Twinkle, Thirteena-Starr and Velvet.
After the box office success of Disney’s Frozen, 31 girls were named Elsa, 28 were named Anna and eight boys, Olaf.
TV show Games of Thrones did not result in any Daenerys, but five girls were named Khaleesi, Khalese or Khalisa, after her title, meaning “queen”.
Lisa Penney, of Bounty, the UK’s largest parenting club, said: “Celebrities like the Beckhams are renowned for choosing unusual names for their offspring and today’s parents are quick to follow a trend in a bid to make sure their choice of baby names stands out from the crowd.
“But baby name trends can change quickly and names that first seem unusual can quickly become common in the classroom.
“While certain baby names can quickly rise to fame, they can just as easily fall from favour.
“Take Tilly, Lexi and Lacey, for example, now that they are more common in classrooms across the country they no longer make the grade for new parents who want a name that no other child is likely to have in the playground.”
There was also a fall in the number of deaths registered, with this dropping by 461 to 54,239 – the fourth-lowest number of deaths recorded in the last 150 years
A total of 29,070 couples tied the knot last year, 1,500 more marriages than took place in 2013.
Of these, 367 were same-sex marriages, following legislation which allowed gay couples to wed from December last year. Of these couples, 359 had already been in a civil partnership.

Thanks for both articles above GC. The following has hee-haw to do with rugby.
When I was a starry eyed student teacher I had my first parents' evening, in an all-girls comprehensive in Tooting. There was one young girl who went by the name of Giftie. She arrived with a couple who could have easily been her grandparents but as it turned out were her very proud parents. As the consultation (don't you love management speak?) was drawing to a close I asked them where her unusual name came from, was it a traditional Caribbean name?
He father chuckled quietly, Giftie blushed and shook her head and mother said,
" Oh no sir, we married ever such a long time and we try and we try and no baby come. Eventually we stop hoping. Then one day when we think it never happen...along she comes or little gift from God. Our Giftie."
Now that's what you call a sensible name.

Given the indyref theme I'm surprised no one called their child "scaremongering" - that was the most commonly used word after all!
Are there laws in place to stop people naming their child certain names that might lead to long term bullying and teasing? Like
Adolf
S**thead
Fannybaws
Reject
Mistake
etc.

My wife and I had a baby last year (Alexander) and we know the kid who is called Fox. We met the very West End parents at some baby music nightmare and he was wearing a faux-African bracelet thing...at the age of 2 months. I think the mum works at some alternative health 'clinic'.
That kid has no chance.

I think there is, but I don't know if it's something the kid has to instigate of whether the register of births and deaths folks have that power.
http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/jan/19/christ-lucifer-baby-names-rejected-new-zealand
might just be a NZ thing actually

67. AJ - 1

69. L B - 1

Why would you call your child "Lucifer", or "Mafia no fear". Also calling your kid "Anal" either is named after where they were conceived, with a very poor understanding of human biology, or their parents should be shot. I also seem to recall another kid who their parents wanted to be called "no.35 bus shelter" or something like that.

Yes, as with NZ there are banned names in the UK, but in the US there are no restrictions at all.RDW_Scotland wrote:Given the indyref theme I'm surprised no one called their child "scaremongering" - that was the most commonly used word after all!

Hence, the great bit from Louis CK's stand up routine when he said he wanted his daughter's name to just be a noise comprised entirely of consonants: "Ffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffft".
He also said that as you can use complete phrases, he was going to call his son "Ladies and Gentlemen". That way, he could walk into a room and say "This is my son, Ladies and Gentlemen" or be able shout "Ladies and Gentlemen! Please!".

contraversial!
I'm not sure there are any banned names in the UK! Freedom of speech and that!
My personal fave from a few years back was mr and Mrs Pipe whom called their kid Duane!
I do know there is a lassie running about in Craigmiller who is called Poccahontus!
I think parents who give their bairns silly names should receive each and every punch that the child is going to get at school!

My parents were teachers and towards the end of their careers could barely disguise their mirth when writing the school reports for all of the Britney McGonigals and Shakira MacGlumphers out there.

My wife's school has Myass and Shihead. Spelling unknown but that's how they are pronounced.
Try keeping a straight face when telling them off.

For my sins tend to watch (or at least skip through) Scrum V Sunday, to see what the welsh take is on the pro 12. Interesting comment on the scarlets that 'John Barclay and James Davies' (new 7) have been their two key players this season.
