Re: The Indian Wells Masters 1000 Thread
You see, we're only speculating here, is it truly approval or encouragement? No one knows except Rafa himself. Unless you can get an answer from the man himself, whatever I decide, does it matter?? You're arguing for the sake of arguing, just wanting to prove that what that article wrote about is/was right. And why did I say ' encouragement and approval'? Because I do believe Toni and Rafa do work out some game plans, and so when out there executing that game plan, Rafa needs some approval or encouragement. Players do look up to their player box(es) sometimes for encouragement, sometimes even for some coaching when they're not sure of themselves, this is not uncommon. So far, only Fed among the top players, doesn't look to his player box and I admire him for that. While I hope that Rafa could one day be like Fed, ie not even needs to look up to his player box, I do understand that many players out there needs some encouragement, or assurances, and Rafa is no different.

It might be better to just ignore stuff you find boring. at the end of the day, useless as it may seem, its just two people chatting over how a big player ticks, theres nothing bad here.Jahu wrote:Haddie-nuff wrote:Jahu wrote:Keep it up Shrinks, talking about Rafa like you lot grew with him.
Sad.
No its not me that is sad Jahu its you. Every player is the subject of a huge joke for you. I dont know him personally but I know a great deal about him and other players as it happens because I want to know the man as well as the tennis player. There are REAL PEOPLE behind those racquets. Yes I have followed Rafa's career and what makes him tick since his beginnings and I do know more than most about the Spanish way of life. They are all human beings ...ALL of them. Not Robots and an objects of ridicule.
Its is sad HN.
Who cares for the personal life and the childhood of the players?
No, you do not know what makes Rafa tick or how UT treated him when he was child, thats just you throwing random imaginations into Rafas life, all in the name of you knowing his life so well and impressing us with your "insider" information.
Don't be such a compulsive obsessive fan, especially on a weekend here, boring us with deep private stuff of a person you know nothing and that apart from you, no one cares or can confirm your comments.

Haddie, very interesting article, thanks for the link. I was not surprised by what I read, Nadal is one of the most intense competitors sport has ever seen and it will be complex to work out what goes on in his mind.
BLB, I do think you make some valid points too, I think Nadal is a mix of a lot of confidence, vulnerability, and a ridiculous desire and hunger to win every single point. It's the mix of these 3 emotions, which sometimes seems contradictory, which makes him what he is.
Jahu, your posts are neither funny nor are they contributing anything, if you don't like the topic being discussed that's fine by me, but stop constantly complaining about others discussing it.

I guess that's why I said "a" supreme motivating force.laverfan wrote:bogbrush wrote:Fear of failure is a supreme motivating force. It drives me in business as hard as other motivations. Not sure I'd call it psychosis though, all motivation is, by definition, a desperate urge to be in a different state.
It is not the only motivating force. Creativity is a much larger driver. Exhilaration in a sporting activity is its own reward. Edison found 10,000 ways to fail, before the light bulb came on. If such a fear was the only driver, we would all be crawling towards Mt. Everest or trying to win a Grand Slam/MS1000s otherwise 99.99% of us are failures. Knowing one's limitations is not failure, it is wisdom, borne out of experience.
That said, fear of failure is great. You can decide you've got enough but can never tire of avoiding failure because it's always there, chasing you down. I've strived for decades to get to a stage where I wouldn't fear losing and the milestones I set were passed a long time ago, only to find the motivation never fades, making satisfaction is an illusion.
Creativity is a behaviour, not a motivation. You can't be creative unless you're already possessed of a desperate need to be somewhere you're not right now.

Why not both? Getting approval probably encourages him to push harder.Belovedluckyboy wrote:You see, we're only speculating here, is it truly approval or encouragement? Im not sure I'd admire people more for not looking at their box. Its a personality thing really, some people are a lot more introverted and rather keep to themselves, others are more outward and look for something to bounce off. I dont personally think one guy is better than the other, just different.

I don't think Nadal looks to the box for inspiration. A bit of coaching maybe, but he's self-sufficient for the other.
I disagree, looking to others for motivation is a sign of weakness. No problem looking for advice, or reassurance but not for motivation. Murray should take a leaf and forget the box exists.

What about say, people who are in the army? They look to one another for strength, I wouldn't personally say thats a weakness.bogbrush wrote:I don't think Nadal looks to the box for inspiration. A bit of coaching maybe, but he's self-sufficient for the other.

What about Roger? Im sure hes motivated to play well for his kids, and his wife and family too? Thats not weakness surely?
Its a bit of a bleak outlook, that you can only be strong if you do everything yourself without any reliance on others. What that might show is that Federer plays a bit more for himself, and Nadal more for others, hence why the focus for motivation is different. Difference isn't weakness to me though

I didn't say anything about depending on team members for practical help, or what you fight for.
My point is that the drive can only come from oneself.

It's one person telling us how Rafa's childhood might of been, on a Masters 1000 thread, on the day when the No1 & No2 will play a huge match, where Rafa is not even on the picture, and I have to come here and read about Rafas life imagination from his fan.
You should of not allowed that link about Rafa to be posted on a Master thread, and taking the bait from HN to totally derail this thread, just because Rafa is not anymore on IW, which she succeeded.
Complete monopolization of a Masters thread.
I know you agree, just that as a mod now, you have to sugar coat and balance stuff here

Personally don't think Djokovic is playing that well this season. Yes he won Australian Open, but he's no way near the level required to win the French Open. Let's be honest if Murray wasn't a giver upper, he'd have won the Australian. Federer beat Djoko in the 500 as well.

As a mod I am perfectly happy to go off topic for a bit in the hours before a match starts, particularly since noone was posting anything beforehand anyway. What Haddie posted is harmless, and its got people talking before the final, Ill ask to get back on topic once the match goes live.
Im not sure what you would have me do? Delete and ban discussion because you find it boring? You now we cant do that.
If somethings too off topic, then flag it for a report, then all the mods can have a look, dont derail the derailment, that doesnt counter anything.

It's tough to say because mostly we gauge them from their results against each other. Its a zero sum game in the end (just like using numbers of Slams to discuss era strength!).

Federers currently got a white hot serving arm. His tactic against Novak is a simple one. Use the serve to keep Novaks return at bay, and then just go for it on the return games. With his serve now, he only needs one good return game a set, which is what he got in Dubai.
His serve is the key to his success today, if it falters he could be in real trouble.

Tempo, next time articles about personal life of a player do not belong on a Masters thread, do you agree?
So their own thread, and who likes to salivate over their fav players childhood, can go there, is it fair enough?
Thats all, and HN has scored a win to keep us all out from a non Nadal Final.
Thx.

Jahu, Ive been advised by the other two mods here to deal with things more officially. Ergo if you arent willing to flag it, and give reasons, soo all the mods can see it, im not going to do anything with it any longer.
You are welcome of course, to become a mod yourself if you think were not strict enough on off topic material during downtime, or ask Lf. At the mo its keeping people involved in the thread and its harmless, so Im fine with it.

Very good point. The fear of failure and vulnerability can actually be one of a player's biggest strengths.bogbrush wrote:I guess that's why I said "a" supreme motivating force.laverfan wrote:bogbrush wrote:Fear of failure is a supreme motivating force. I thought I'd missed the start but it's not even underway yet!
I agree with temp21 about Federer's serve being the key shot. Roger produced a serving masterclass in Dubai and I think that was the key factor in that match.
Tougher for him to do that on this surface but he will still cause Novak problems if it is firing properly.
My expectation is that, as ever in this match up, Federer will start the better and Novak will have to hang in there in the early stages.
Beyond that... not sure.
