Re: The Indian Wells Masters 1000 Thread
He doesn't need to, he knows the long rallies are in his favour. It's Federer who has to press. On a very fast court it's he who has the advantage that the ball will hurry Djokovic.temporary21 wrote:Oh for sure it would be more competitive, but the court doesnt make roger miss a load of first serves, or return poorly. Novak isnt overhitting, in fact hes striking it very aggressively. Roger needs to look at how Novaks doing it, he cant always hope for a zippy court.
Federer is serving 56%, not great but not abysmal. The problem is the 2nd serve gets him nowhere because it's a rally.

Djoko getting aces on this slow mud pit, shows he has improved so much on the serve.

Very hard to see what Roger could do here.

But these are all excuses though surely. If Novak isnt mis-hitting Federer shouldnt be either, and if he pressing then he has to reign his shot back and put some control on it.
All the counter punching advantages Novak has here are available to Roger, he just isnt as good at it as Novak.

Novak was 17/17 on first serves in the 1st set. That's superlative serving!

I think it's the bounce rather than the speed that tilts this toward Novak. Everything comes nicely into his strike zone.
Federer clearly not at his best though. So many forehand errors.

Right, so you think Roger can retrieve / rally from the back as well as Novak? Seriously?temporary21 wrote:But these are all excuses though surely. If Novak isnt mis-hitting Federer shouldnt be either, and if he pressing then he has to reign his shot back and put some control on it.

Djoko just dropping balls into court.
Fed should do some baselining now and cool down the attack.

Re: The Indian Wells Masters 1000 Thread
No of course he cant, hence why Novaks beating him. Rogers just gonna have to play better, frankly Novaks serving, attacking and defending way better in this match than Roger, you cant pin that on the surface, thats Rogers fault.bogbrush wrote:Right, so you think Roger can retrieve / rally from the back as well as Novak? Re: The Indian Wells Masters 1000 Thread
I think to be fair he's having to press more than he'd like, because Novak will get virtually everything back. Fed won't, he knows it, so he has to go for it. I don't think Federer is inherently playing badly (this is actually a match unlike the 1st semi), he's just pushing.HM Murdoch wrote:I think it's the bounce rather than the speed that tilts this toward Novak. This isn't detracting from Djokovic play, which is easily better than anyone on the tour right now.

Re: The Indian Wells Masters 1000 Thread
I agree with bogbrush. Plus knowing the slow conditions, Fed knows he needs to try a bit harder, hence more shanking. It`s not an excuse though - same court for both and may the better win! It just happens that fast courts favour Fed`s game and slow courts Djoko's, comparativelybogbrush wrote:Right, so you think Roger can retrieve / rally from the back as well as Novak? It's not a case the conds are causing Roger to misfire. It's the fact that some shots on a faster court will have the purchase on them that would largely negate endless hours of rallying.
Take nothing away from Novaks performance today. His game on this court will just eat up an aggressors game all day.

On the same coin, look back at Wimby 12. You cant pin the indoor conditions as the reason Novak lost. Tough, use the conditions and attack more.

Overall maybe, but not this match. The rallies arent that long, and Rogers losing most of the shorter ones anyway.legendkillarV2 wrote:temporary21 wrote:But these are all excuses though surely. Anyway, my main problem with the surface talk is the fact they arent playing on different courts to one another, they both get the same conditions, and its up to them to manage it.

That leaves me confused as to why Sampras won 7 Wimbledons and no French. I mean, the conditions were always the same for both players, right?temporary21 wrote:Anyway, my main problem with the surface talk is the fact they arent playing on different courts to one another, they both get the same conditions, and its up to them to manage it.

Well thats tough, if you can only win with short rallies, then maybe you dont deserve to win, not "its not fair the court doesnt favour me".

In a single match, theyre playing on the same single court. At that point in time, they have the same conditions.bogbrush wrote:That leaves me confused as to why Sampras won 7 Wimbledons and no French. Indeed, a little patience, move the ball about, look to tie your opponent up, and its 50-50 al of a sudden

But not every shot, once he smoothes out his BH and make it gentler, it gets better,

Feds an excellent slow court player, he cant just go on the kamikaze just because his opponents better at that facet, the time calls for patience.
Great hold though, Novak put himself back together.
