I had to wait an 'appropriate' period. Mrs MPB said that was 6 weeks, I said 2, we negotiated at 4.....

It will come as a great shock to super that I am not actually a massive fan of the Guardian, and read it (only online) only because the alternatives are so poor. Some of the stuff they publish as science is nothing other than woo.

Deepak Chopra is a well known moron. I've never seen him look anything other than idiotic. Sam Harris is particularly fine at ridiculing him.

Mac, sometimes you need to look past the odd things you don't like about people.
We will never like everything about everyone, and it's a stupid reason to dislike someone entirely because of a few things you don't like.
Harris, Hitchens, Dawkins etc might all have aspects about them which aren't good, but when it comes to discounting idiots like Chopra, Lennox, Sharpton, Donahue etc they are spot on.

It's Poopie. It's the equivalent of being 4 or 5 nil down midway through the first half.

reminds me of the Germany-Brazil semi. I missed the first ten minutes (I think I was cooking) so switched on to see Germany 1-0 up. Then my internet started playing up 5 minutes later, and by the time I got that sorted and switched the football back on it was 5-0

This probably has been mentioned before, but I've only just thought of it. I have a friend who enjoys golf and we often compare betting slips re the Majors. she goes on holiday to Orlando a lot and I suggested that she should try out Graeme McDowells restaurant Nona Blue. I even suggested she pop in there Saturday or Sunday as she is likely to see him there on those days. Boom Boom.

I might be missing something in among all the innuendo but mcdools restaurant (actually I think he is just a "face" and not an owner) looks a bit typical American, all portion and no finesse.

What is it with guitarists wanting to sing? Who told Rory Gallagher he could sing? Got Shadow Play on the radio and while the guitar is pretty stellar, I'm not so sure about the singing.

I tend to agree with you about Rory Gallagher - but as he's one of those who passed away tragically young he seems to get a free pass from music fans. I read and post on a lot of music forums and Rory is one of those elevated to God-like status .. mostly for passing too soon. If only the same accolades has been doled out to someone like Jeff Healey or SRV

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
I think anybody who knows guitar would rate Jeff Healey, SRV, Joe Satriani etc all up there with or maybe even a bit ahead of Rory from a pure technique standpoint, but that's not to say he doesn't qualify as a guitar god...whatever that means.
He gets some extra points (from me and many others) for a number of reasons. He tried to stay true to his music and gave up on several very real opportunities to become more successful commercially. In dark times in Ireland he kicked back very hard against the whole sectarian environment that pervaded that era, and religiously (ha!) played Belfast regardless, when nobody else would.
A lot of the accolades he gets from current guitarists (and that's a very broad range - from Johnny Marr to Slash) are about the man as much if not more than the technical capability (which was very much his own style) and I think this elevates him. I saw him play a few times when I was very young and he was incredibly charismatic in a really quiet, powerful but understated way - you very much wanted him to be your mate.
But you're right - early or untimely death does tend to elevate or distort the perspective a little. But then why shouldn't it - the regard we hold these types of people is not restricted to just how well they plucked a string.
His vocals were a bit patchy and hit or miss, and sometimes the live versions of his songs have much better vocals than the studio versions. I always got the sense he was not comfortable in the studio and didn't like the recording process.

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
Very true. There's a YouTube clip of SRV playing a warmup for a gig having arrived (or just woken up?) undoubtedly after a heavy drink/smack night, wearing a wacky coat. Simply picks up a guitar and what comes out is amazing. His version of Hendrix's Voodoo Chile is utterly unreal as well:Davie wrote:I tend to agree with you about Rory Gallagher - but as he's one of those who passed away tragically young he seems to get a free pass from music fans. - Spoiler:
Jeff Healey - didn't he have a bit part in the Patrick Swayze film 'Roadhouse'? Really good player and the fact he was blind makes it a great story.

Yes JH was the house band in Roadhouse. Rescued the film from being truly dreadful and elevated it to merely awful status

I have a very firm grip, thanks dear.
You've explained yourself well, it just sounds as if you were calling mac stupid for doing something he believed in.
As for the labour party, I think the medias (and the partys reaction!) to Corbyn tells it's own tale. By aping the tories for the last 20 years, they have shown themselves to be the chinless wonders we always suspected. As soon as someone with any substance (whether you believe it or not) comes along they are Poopie themselves. Scotland proved that a viable left leaning party could do very well indeed. I mean what was the choice in the last election? Same old, same old or same old? Even a party of opposition is better than 3 parties whose policies are dictated to by the establishment (banks, multi's etc.)
Well done mac I hope your £3 changes the world.

None of which I disagree with, but still think being able to buy a vote £3 is open to all sorts of abuse and is, if you believe some of what has been said/planned, is more than part of the reason for the Corbyn juggernaut

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
Corbyn seems to have the support of both genuine 'new socialists' and cynical tories who despite winning the election are apparently so insecure at the 'threat' of Burnham and the other two who are so nondescript and pointless I can't even remember their names, that they feel the need to try and help the utterly ineffectual centrist Labour party back to its roots from whence it can either offer a genuine alternative or die. Do they think if the latter happens they'll have a one party system? If so, they're thicker than they seem.

We're supposed to take that from "Did you pay your £3 to do so? What a stupid idea". Nice. Try articulating your thoughts in a full sentence.
(articulating doesn't mean big lorries by the way, but making your inside head pictures readable to those outside your head)

This did read like you were saying that I was stupid to have paid my £3 and voted for Corbyn. But I now get your point.
I am not sure it is such a bad idea to make voting such an easy task as long as there is a bit of vetting. The more people who engage with politics well before a general election the better.

I take the point it could have been read either way. But no need to go off the deep end Monty style. A simple request for clarification would have done.
A man who refers to himself as 'we' must have a fair few problems upstairs though so I'll cut him some slack.
Completely agree with you Mac re engaging people. Just seems to be a bit open to abuse and indeed, has been abused evidently
