Franchises - Ranked!
First topic message reminder :
Everybody has a favourite film franchise so I wondered how you would rank the films within your favourite franchise from best to worst.
The Batman franchise is one of the most successful and lucrative and I am sure most people would place the Nolan films above the originals.
The Die Hard series have produced 5 action packed films but how many people would, like me, place Die Hard 3 as number 1?
There has been 10 Halloween films but which is the best?
Is Police Academy 5 really that good?
Let us know your favourite franchise, it can be any, and then list (with a reason) why they are placed where they are.
My favourite is the Superman series.
1 - Superman
The blueprint of superhero films. This film really did make me believe a man could fly, from Donner's direction to the superb special effects to Christopher Reeve's outstanding performance. Without this there would be no other Superman movie. This film stands above the rest.....just.
2 - Superman 2
An outstanding sequel. General Zod scared the hell out of me and rightly so. The fight scene towards the end nearly made this number 1 for me but just misses out due to the silly super kiss that erases Lois's memory.
3 - Man of Steel
The eagerly anticipated reboot that didn't fail to live up to the hype. A great origin story with a lot of heart and effects that belong in a Superman film.
4 - Superman 3
A guilty pleasure. Not a classic but a fun film with a brilliant fight sequence between Clark and Evil Superman. This let me down by evil Superman not actually being that evil. Getting p*ssed and straightening the Leaning Tower of Pisa aren't exactly the make up of a supervillain!
5 - Superman Returns
I enjoyed this when it first came out but over time have come to find this quite dull and boring. Superman was turned into a miserable brooding stalker. Not good.
6 - Superman 4: The Quest for Peace
Awful effects, awful villain and awful direction. The storyline was honourable but did not live up the standards of a Superman film.
There you go, let me know yours.
Cheers

Don't think I've seen Shrek mentioned yet. My preference would probably go something like:
Shrek 4
Shrek 3
Shrek 2
Shrek 1
Shrek 4
Shrek 3
Shrek 2
Shrek 1

"Eddie, your breath smells disgusting, what have you been eating?"
"Dog dirt!"
"Why?"
"For a bet"
What do you mean?"
"Well, I said, 'I bet that tastes disgusting'....and it did!"

Lost my way with X-Men franchise...I'm not much of a sci-fi/comic book geek in the first place and then all the films seemed to blur into one after a while and I have no idea what's a spin -off, prequel or sequel any more

I could rank the books but I couldn't stomach more than the first twilight film. It's a ludicrously bad series of films

If I did not know how much you loved me Galted I would genuinely think you just did these things to annoy me. How can someone with such good taste in films get Bond so wrong? It is almost like you do not treat them with the reverence they warrant.

Re: Franchises - Ranked!
I watched (or to be more w@nkerish, revisited) all the Star Wars films a while back when I watched 4 & 5 for the first time and, as much as I want to like them, have to admit that they are all a bit sh1t to a lot sh1t.
The Empire Strikes Back is by far the best in my opinion, the sh1t bit being Mark Hamill's annoying bumface which could make anything difficult to watch. The rest suffer from a variety of sh1tness including, but not restricted to: the blue elephant in the band, the music the band plays, Mark Hamill's bumface, the phucking ewoks, Hayden Christensen, Jar-Jar Binks, the very young Anakin, and the phucking muppets playing the other species in episodes 4-6.

Jack Ryan films.
Patriot Games
Clear and Present Danger
Hunt for Red October
Sum of All Fears
Shadow Recruit
Just to add while Temple of Doom may be sub par in comparison to the two other films of its decade it is a genuine masterpiece in comparison to Crystal Skull.

Fear of upsetting you is what's kept me from posting my views on Bond, Jeff. Truth is that none of them (bar Octopussy) are anything more than a guilty pleasure and I also tend to favour the ones I watched as a kid which happened to feature Roger Moore. I can't stand any film containing Sean Connery and the later ones take themselves too seriously for my liking (I haven't read the books so am a bit ignorant in that respect). Octopussy is a work of genius though.

I kind of assumed that would be your view of them. I dearly love the Bond films. Like you watched them as a kid, but never got round to growing out of them. Am that big a Bond geek I have even started reading the non Fleming books, nearly done all the John Gardner ones.

Live and Let Die, The Spy Who Loved Me - definitely my favourite Roger Moore ones. Roger Moore was an absolute boss back then.

In that case I rate them as follows:
Goldfinger
Casino Royale
Goldeneye
Skyfall
Live and Let Die
From Russia With Love
Golden Gun
Thunderball
Licence To Kill
Spy Who Loved Me
OHMSS
Dr No
Living Daylights
For Your Eyes Only
Diamonds are Forever
View to A Kill
World is Not Enough
You Only Live Twice
Tomorrow Never Dies
Quantum of Solace
Octopussy
Moonraker
Die Another Day

Re: Franchises - Ranked!
Given the guy must be pushing 60 the chances of him unleashing anything other than trapped wind are minimal and do we really want to see Han Solo getting into a Falcon that's been fitted with handrails and a Stana stairlift? The Saint wrote:Galted wrote:

I think the new Star Wars might be interesting. Also, I read that George Lucas unfortunately let slip a bit of vital information on the death of a major character:
- Spoiler:
- Han Solo

I think a lot of people will have Connery as their number 1.
I just think Moore was quality. Just think he played it that bit better the rest.

Re: Franchises - Ranked!
i do despair at the youth of today when fast and the furious is being mentioned as one of the best franchises out there
problem with a lot of franchises for me is there have been some terrible films in there that just bring it down as a whole, love original 3 star wars for example but the next 3 were so enormously cack that it brings the whole series into just being average. rocky doesnt do too bad with only 5 as being the real stinker. indiana jones was good but that crystal skull one was awful.
also those saying die hard 3 is the best are wrong, no opinion needed. 1 is simply better and probably one of the best action films of all time
big lotr fan before the films, so obviously have that trilogy right up there as one of my favourites. if you can stick reading through dead marshes chapters then watching a 3 and a half hour film is a breeze.
honorable mentions to rocky, alien, bourne, xmen, toy story, die hard, home alone, batman (if you ignore everything after second till nolans) old planet of the apes and new ones, and terminator. one and two i love so im willing to ignore the rest
never seen the fuss with superman, never really liked any of them. some are down right awful. im probably a bit young to appreciate the older ones but watched them back and they haven't dated well at all, considering the first star wars was out before first superman.
