Franchises - Ranked!
First topic message reminder :
Everybody has a favourite film franchise so I wondered how you would rank the films within your favourite franchise from best to worst.
The Batman franchise is one of the most successful and lucrative and I am sure most people would place the Nolan films above the originals.
The Die Hard series have produced 5 action packed films but how many people would, like me, place Die Hard 3 as number 1?
There has been 10 Halloween films but which is the best?
Is Police Academy 5 really that good?
Let us know your favourite franchise, it can be any, and then list (with a reason) why they are placed where they are.
My favourite is the Superman series.
1 - Superman
The blueprint of superhero films. This film really did make me believe a man could fly, from Donner's direction to the superb special effects to Christopher Reeve's outstanding performance. Without this there would be no other Superman movie. This film stands above the rest.....just.
2 - Superman 2
An outstanding sequel. General Zod scared the hell out of me and rightly so. The fight scene towards the end nearly made this number 1 for me but just misses out due to the silly super kiss that erases Lois's memory.
3 - Man of Steel
The eagerly anticipated reboot that didn't fail to live up to the hype. A great origin story with a lot of heart and effects that belong in a Superman film.
4 - Superman 3
A guilty pleasure. Not a classic but a fun film with a brilliant fight sequence between Clark and Evil Superman. This let me down by evil Superman not actually being that evil. Getting p*ssed and straightening the Leaning Tower of Pisa aren't exactly the make up of a supervillain!
5 - Superman Returns
I enjoyed this when it first came out but over time have come to find this quite dull and boring. Superman was turned into a miserable brooding stalker. Not good.
6 - Superman 4: The Quest for Peace
Awful effects, awful villain and awful direction. The storyline was honourable but did not live up the standards of a Superman film.
There you go, let me know yours.
Cheers

Shame every F & F release coincides with an increase in the number of road deaths caused by dippy c*nts racing each other.

The Potters were a pleasant surprise as I didn't think they'd be my cup of tea either. Didn't read the books and watched the first one out of curiosity. Wasn't that impressed but was enough to pique my interest so tried the second which wasn't good. Then watched Prisoner of Azkaban with not much intention of watching any more and had to admit it was damn good. The last 5 were decent enough except for Goblet of Fire which was sh1te. Wouldn't shout too loudly about them but they're worth a watch, just don't judge the franchise on Goblet of Fire or Chamber of Secrets.

Re: Franchises - Ranked!
LOTR goes 3, 1, 2 for me. Couldn't rank the Harry Potter films as only the last two, maybe the last three, are any good. Too much whoring out of the story in all of them.
I love Die Hard but my feelings on them change so much. Think I may go 2, 3, 1, 4 on current mood.
I've only seen the first Alien and then Promotheus and was hugely underwhelmed.
Haven't rewatched the Matrix since but that would be intriguing.
All the Crank films are obviously level pegging in brilliance.
Surprised no one has ranked Bond yet. Or Rocky. Or Rambo.

It does arguably have the best song. Live and Let Die is pretty good though. Also has Barbara Bach who is ridiculously fit. Roger Moore irritates me a bit as Bond though.

Re: Franchises - Ranked!
I have unorthodox views on both the LOTR trilogy and the Harry Potter franchise.
For LOTR I go 2-1-3. The battles in 3 for me were a bit too similar to those in 2, and the ending(s) drag on too long (yes I know they're like that in the book, possibly longer, but you can get away with it in a book a bit more, and IMO Tolkien does it to tie in with the rest of the universe in any case, not needed in the films). The second one for me just nicks it for that epic scene with Gollum talking to himself, superbly made.
Re Harry Potter I really don't like the third one, despite it seemingly consistently considered to be one of the best. For me it's possibly the best book of the franchise (certainly up there) but the film is a bit muddled. Also a werewolf with little/no hair? What's that about? The scene with the Firebolt at the end is utterly cringeworthy too. Not to say it doesn't have some fine scenes (Sirius Black is terrific), but overall it was a bit of a let down for me. By contrast, I really liked the fifth film, despite it being (for me) comfortably the weakest book in the series. They cut out a lot of the rubbish from the book, and made a very good film. I also like the second film, weirdly enough (which is usually hated). Felt the first film tried almost too much to stick to the book, which the second film didn't, and IMO (and I'm probably alone on this one) does a good job. Fourth film is pretty poor, and the seventh is a set-up for the eighth (which is excellent). So if I had to rank them I'd probably go
8 - 6/5(can't split 'em) - 2 - 7 - 1 - 3 - 4
Matrix is easy. 1 - big gap - 2 - huge gap - 3
Die Hard. The first is still the best. Alan Rickman as Hans Gruber ranks up there with the best bad guys ever in films. Tough to measure up to that. 3 is excellent too, 2 is good, as is 4. 5 is of course rubbish (it loses all that which made the "Die Hard" films so great, far too serious). So 1-3-2-4-huge gap-5.
X-men. Trickier. You have the first two films which are excellent. I quite enjoyed Last Stand (another unpopular opinion?) though it's not as good as the first two. Then you have the two Wolverine films, which are awful (the second being only slightly less awful than the first). And then the latest two: First Class, and Days of Future Past, which are both excellent again. Really liked First Class, and I agree with those who say the casting is spot on. I struggle to compare the latter two films to the first two of the franchise, but if pushed I'd probably go
First Class - X-men 1 - X-men 2 - Days of Future Past - Last Stand - huge gap - The Wolverine - Origins.
Batman. Are we allowed to include the 60's film? Tremendously funny, but not quite in the same spirit as the more recent ones "what sits in a tree and is dangerous?" "a sparrow with a machine gun!". Also, I really liked the animated film Mask of the Phantasm, so am going to stick that in there. The worst film of the franchise is undoubtedly the awful Batman and Robin. I watched a bit of it recently to check if it was "so bad it's good in an amusing way" and switched off after ten minutes. It isn't, it's just awful. Best has to be Dark Knight, a superb film all around. Then it gets trickier. Loved Burton's first film, Batman Returns is pretty good. Didn't think so much of Batman Forever. Batman Begins and Dark Knight Rises both have great elements, but some weaknesses too. I'll go
The Dark Knight
Batman (Burton)
Batman Begins
Mask of the Phantasm
The Dark Knight Rises
Batman (60s)
Batman Returns
Batman Forever
Batman and Robin

Decent effort actually. I agree with the top 3 and the order, though I quite enjoyed Moonraker in a silly sort of way, and sometimes think Quantum of Solace gets undeserved stick due to being very different to Casino Royale and Skyfall...

Fair cop MFC, lower mid table, above Diamonds are Forever probably. Moonraker annoyed the hell out of me, as do most of the later Moore ones. Looking at the list I have been way too kind to View to a Kill, should be much lower.

3. LW4 (Although annoying, I thought Chris Rock was a good addition to the cast - his inclusion meant I could divert some of my irritation from the (thankfully now toned down) Leo Getz character to Butters. Stupid fight scenes with Jet Li though as he would have destroyed them both in a heartbeat.

4 very funny.
Reckon I watch a Lethal Weapon once every fortnight. Probably only second to Independence Day in terms of air time.
Was there a Seagal franchise. Nout under seige but I think Hard to Kill was part of a threesome?

Re: Franchises - Ranked!
I'm not sure I could rank all the Bonds in order TBH beyond giving my top few and my bottom few. In the middle there are so many different styles etc. Plus for me it would also depend on when I first watched it - e.g. if I saw one of the sillier Moore ones first as a kid I've probably got some nostalgia for it.
Top 3 would be From Russia with Love, Goldfinger and Casino Royale.
Bottom 3 View to a Kill (somewhat saved by Zornin as the bad guy), Moonraker (daft) and Die Another Day (no redeeming features whatsoever).
As for the others... I think both the Dalton films actually survive quite well today. Indeed I think if they'd been made now they'd be much better viewed than they were at the time. I actually quite liked some aspects of Quantum of Solace, but actually feel Quantum themselves were underused throughout. I quite liked Octopussy as well for some reason. I liked the throwing knives I think.
I've never quite got the love for Goldeneye. It's good sure, but for me not up there with the best. In fact I think Tomorrow Never Dies is pretty much as good (but then I really like TND). Diamonds are Forever is one of the weakest IMO.
Also don't we have to include Never Say Never (terrible) and the original (spoof) Casino Royale (hated it as a kid but haven't watched it since) somewhere?

Goldeneye is my favourite Bond, thought it was an excellent film. Which is the one where he is locked in the coffin and about to be cremated?? I like that one too. Also the one where he is fighting Jaws on the cable car.
Anybody fancy doing the Terminator films? I would but haven't seen Salvation.

If it ends like the first one with Collins being lowered into a vat of molten steel I would happily buy a ticket.

West, are you putting Empire Strikes back as the worst of the original 3? Are you mad? Are you madder than Brian Mad of Madcastle?

I would even pay for the 3d Imax version, as a Yorkshireman I do not commit to such expenditure lightly.

I just preferd Return Of The Jedi to Empire Strikes Back.
Although not a popular choice on here.
I only remember bits of ESB, like the battle ot the start.
The end was ok when they were at LC's base, Vader etc got there first at took HS.
Still liked it from what I can remember, just not as much as Jedi.

It starts very well, LS trying to save HS.
The battle at Sarlecc
LC "Han will have the shield down, we gotta give him more time"
Cue Solo etc battling on Endor Moon.
Vader turning from the dark side.
C'mon who doesnt love that

Re: Franchises - Ranked!
Seriously what is wrong with people???!!! You all mostly seem perfectly sensible and then you go and say something which shows that you are obviously completely and utterly doolally!
Now look, I really like Return of the Jedi, I think it often gets a rough time of things because of those silly teddy bears. I like that Luke stops being the bratty teenager at times, and Vader's arc is really nicely done.
But it is not, repeat not, better than the masterpiece that is the Empire Strikes Back.
In the same way you can like Die Hard 3 all you like, or the 2nd one. You can even enjoy the 4th for all I care. But you can't possibly say they are better than the original, that is insane.
Just like you know, you can enjoy the 3rd godfather film (it is not really that bad, it is just not that good IMO) but not rank it anywhere near the first two, you can enjoy Alien 3 (I liked the dark tone) without placing it above the first one, you're even allowed to enjoy Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull (meh some of it was a laugh) etc. etc.
BUT!!!!
Some opinions are just not on people!
/end{tongue in cheek mode}
Anybody willing to rank the Twilight series (which would mean admitting to having watched them)? ;-)

Its a matter of opinion Mike.
I do like you passion for ESB though.
I've watched The Twilight films. Actually thought one of them was ok, forgot the name.

He's even ranked Transformers... Surely that just goes to show how bad his taste in movies is....
On Indiana Jones.... I think Temple of Doom ranks below Crystal skull for me, which I don't think is as bad as made out on here. It certainly isn't as good Raiders of the Lost Ark and the Last Crusade though.

Am not actually a huge fan of Transformers.
I listed them cos i have seen them and they are a franchise.
Again not everbody's taste in films will be the same.
Sorry Saint that my taste isnt as good as yours, or so you would like to think
