Agreed, Highland Park is a cracking malt. The fES family empire includes a cottage on Orkney and it's a great place to visit. The brewery does some wonderful ales as well. A great place to get lashed and good food on offer as well.
I imagine the local players would be pretty rough mind you. They have a weird ball game they play in Kirkwall each year which as far as I can tell is legalised violence and an opportunity for the locals to settle scores with impunity.....

A friend of mine in Guildford got an ASBO for pointing at a police car. He and I were 14 and we were practicing our French vocabulary on the way to school.InjuredYetAgain wrote:Have they been ASBOed out of Patna or something? Excellent news! I'm sure he'll have a lot to offer, and obviously gets on well with Cotter.
I've already got an itinerary for him:
Day 1 - kick Scott Johnson in the chuckies and tell him not to come anywhere near the Scotland team again.

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread VIII
Post world cup he's going to be working with Edinburgh and Glasgow
Broader role post Rugby World Cup...
After the Rugby World Cup Hines' role will broaden to include work with the country's two pro-teams – Edinburgh Rugby and Glasgow Warriors –, the new BT Sport Academies, and Scotland age-grade teams, to help nurture young international players and those coming through the performance system.
This is a fantastic opportunity to help a team I played with for 11 years, and one I obviously want to do well; a team that has given me so much and helped me develop as a player.
- - Nathan Hines
"I think that Scotland have got some exceptional young players and I'm relishing the opportunity to help make them better than they already are. They've got huge potential and I want to help them in their development.
"The chance to work with Vern again is another great benefit of this role.
"He knows how I work and I know how he works, which might have been part of the decision why he asked me to come on board. We got on really well at Clermont and I'm looking forward to working with him again.”
He added: "Part of helping the team mature is sharing my experience and showing them how not to make the same mistakes I did, on my travels, and in my 11 years playing for Scotland."

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread VIII
Cuttitta out for personal reasons, which is usually a euphemism for a falling out. Our scrum has been under performing, given the personnel we have and this must be part of the reason. Toonie clearly felt the need to freshen things up a bit at Glasgow. I wonder who will take charge of the scrum now. Humphries presumably.
Hines coming on board can only be a good thing and I like he fact that he is no bringing his own men in. That can only bode well for the future. Hines could have a great future as a coach and it would be good to see him move into the Scottish cub scene as well further down the line.

excellent move by Scotland to bring in Hines. With his experience and character he will be a very good coach.
Also signed on a two year deal so hopefully that means Cotter will be staying past the world cup and for a while after that.

The other two have got a bit of proving themselves to do yet. Being a good player does not always translate into being a good coach and being a decent club coach does not always translate to the international arena either.
None of us thought a great deal of Toonie when he was a Scotland assistant but someone in the SRU must have seen something in him. It really was a massive leap of faith to replace Linean with him but fortunately one that paid off. International rugby is different though, you don't get the players all the time and there will be no Tombola of selection as there is at the moment. You do suspect that Toonie is shrewd enough to realise that though. It seem almost inconceivable that he won't be the next Scotland coach.
Blair and Hines though need to earn their spurs, both have a good pedigree and both will be working with good proven coaches. Hopefully it will all work out.

I'm not saying anytime soon like, but it must be in their long term plan. There is now a core of young coaches coming through who have experience at the top level - if they can become top coaches it will be a real asset for Scotland and both clubs.
Interesting that Hines was picked to be an assistant coach and lineout specialist and Kellock wasn't...

Blair's knowledge of the intricacies of the game is incredible. His articles on the BeeB show that he sees stuff that a lot of others often miss.
He'll do well if he can replicate that level of detail into coaching.

Probably not that surprising given Hines relationship with VC. In international terms they are chalk and cheese anyway, Hines is a British Lion while Kellock never really established himself at that level.
I think big Al alluded to the fact that he fancied trying some other stuff first, particularly looking at the commercial side of the game. Maybe that is where his strength will lie in the future or he will try coaching a bit further down the line. Maybe he might keep his hand in at a lower level in the meantime to see if he enjoys it.

Hopefully Hines will install some of his enforcer traits into a few of the Scottish forwards especially the Grey brothers.
Its been an area of Scotlands game for the past 3/4 years that I feel has been desperately missing. At times the Scottish team and pack especially have appeared too nice compared to other international packs and been bullied by them. We need Hines to teach a few in the pack the dark arts of being enforcers and to get a bit of aggression back in the pack.

Taylor has written a few articles for the Scotsman and seems to have an understanding of the game similar to Blair. That is if you can understand what the hell he's saying - he likes to use big words to show how clever he is! He even used Latin in one of his articles.Smart arse wrote: Over the gain-line, quick ball, round the corner, repeat ad nauseam until one of your strike runners finds himself in a bit of space and can do some damage.
Who learns Latin in a Scottish School? FES?

As good a player as he was I'm not sure he will cut it as a coach. He is quite an unusual character. When he was at Edinburgh he didn't really mix in or have banter with the rest of the team and kept himself to himself a lot of the time.
Can't really see him as wanting to progress to professional coaching either with all his businesses on the go.

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread VIII
Agree with His Maj on two counts. Firstly, Simon Taylor while really clever does seem a little, ahem, unusual. I used to deal with a guy who was at uni doing law at the same time as Simon Taylor and he said Taylor was prone to odd behaviour when he just wouldn't talk and analysed strange things in (too much) detail. He would go through extremely quiet, thoughtful and generally odd phases. On a side issue, I saw him in a petrol station a couple of weekends ago and he is relatively small compared to when he was in his prime. It just shows how much unnatural bulk the top players carry.
I also agree that we need a tougher streak in the forwards. JJ would be spinning in his grave (if he was dead) when he sees how little rucking - and I mean proper rucking, not stamping - we do. In the 90's it was detrimental to your health if you went down on the ball and held onto it when Calder, Jeffrey, White etc were in their prime. We just don't have any evil barstewards

Of course I studied Latin at school, doesn't everyone?? What did you have between Ancient Greek and Eton Fives?
Taylor studied law at uni I believe, so he's likely to be exceptionally intelligent.
Liking the Hines appointment. He has vast experience of club and international rugby and has worked with some great coaches. Right sort of character as well, no nonsense.

Didn't do Latin at School, but did do a Law degree , it comes with the territory. Still find myself sticking random Latin phrases into written documents and emails, which must confuse some of my American business associates.

So that's Schiz and Bru sorted for the Fair Fortnight next year then.
Gangland.

I have to admit to learning Latin at school. In all honesty, it just made the Monty Python 'Romanes Eunt Domus' scene painfully funny. I could have learned ancient Greek as well, but I was still holding out hopes of speaking to a girl at some point in my life.funnyExiledScot wrote:RuggerRadge2611 wrote:jimbopip wrote:RuggerRadge2611 wrote:RDW_Scotland wrote:In similar news

Bru bro, I went to school with 2 000 Young Offenders and was taught by, inter alia, psychotic sexually frustrated nuns and sadistic Jesuits who smelt of incense and stout. (Nota bene, I used inter alia I want my prize and I want it NOW.)

We have a winner!
justified sinner wrote:Got the following from ER in an email trying to get me to renew my ST early, I will but probably not just now. That says inter alia;
"Looking ahead to next year, while we'll be saying goodbye to one of your firm favourites in Tim Visser, we can be excited by the current crop of young players including Sam Hidalgo-Clyne, Dougie Fife and Ben Toolis representing Edinburgh alongside established senior players such as Ross Ford, Alasdair Dickinson and WP Nel. We'll be working hard for the rest of this season, as well as over the summer, to represent our club and our fans, inspire young players and excite our city."
That says to me that Dickinson and Nel have signed, otherwise they wouldn't be trying to sell STs on the back of it.
FWIW I reckon they probably have, but the SRU's comms strategy seems to be to drip feed the news to maximise the press coverage.
Your prize is a virtual pint of Guinness - on the house!
