Not cheap (discounted advance tickets tend to only become available 12 weeks prior to the date of travel, but only if demand isn't high, and I can't see demand being anything other than high for train tickets that day), but I really didn't want to run the risk of not getting on the train to Geordieland.
That is very interesting. Cheers for the heads up.
Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread VIII
It's odd that you can't buy them directly on the Virgin website, but when that website gave me the chance I didn't want to pass it up, plus (of course) they took the money pretty sharpish so I'm assuming I must have paid for something....

Well my booking does refer to a specific train, just not a specific seat on that train. It told me that seat reservations were not possible.
I have no idea frankly but I shall show up, sit where I want and look blank if anyone tries to evict me.

I'm fairly certain that is Bru's family motto (in Latin of course). It's embroidered on all his undershirts, along with DNR.

Edinburgh really need to move to a newly developed Meadowbank. It's the most sensible option!
And anyone greetin about travelling there, you can get a No 26 bus which comes every 5 mins.
If Edinburgh did go to Easter Road, I'd not worry about the lack of transport as I'm pretty sure you'd set LRT putting buses down there even if they are only on when the Rugby is!

The same LRT that, on the day of the sold out Scotland v Wales game, ran a half hourly Sunday service on the 31 bus route that goes from some of the most populous and studenty areas in the south of Edinburgh to Murrayfield?
Nah...

Interesting that the train line lets you book so far in advance, although the Aberdonian in me winces at those prices!
As well as Newcastle got to figure out trains for Gloucster & Leeds, but I'll be damned if I'm paying £100 for a single from Edinburgh to Cheltenham, especially after only paying £70 for a Edinburgh to Kings Cross return the other week.
Think I'll wait off until the 12 week prior mark.

But then you have to boil your clothes when you get home, which is time consuming.

Get a cab to Cameron House at Loch Lomond, take a long lunch at Martin Wishart, have a ride on the seaplane then grab a cab back just in time for the end of the conference.
You're welcome.

Well I'm going to the Edinburgh game on Saturday, so will have to record Glasgow. Already dreading the close season - much as I like cricket and tennis.

Go to the nearest subway station (possibly Ibrox... do not stop moving), get it clockwise to Hillhead. Get off there and go to "La Vita Spuntini". It's an Italian Tapas type place and is really good.

I was going to say "Take a packed lunch and avoid contact with the lower classes"
But then I remembered you are from Fife so you'll actually fit in no problem

Alternatively if you're feeling lazy and want to stay in the same city then the best eats in Glasgow are Stravaign, Gamba and Two Fat Ladies (probably in that order).

That's just offensive. There's a strict class system operating in Scotland, and it should be observed:
In ascending order:
Soap Dodgers
Dundonians
Fifers
Aberdonians
Islanders (including Shetlanders and Orcadians)
Borderers
Residents of Edinburgh excluding those below
Residents of the Grange, Stockbridge and Morningside
Members of the New Club
Highlanders

Jesus. Lowlander whig pro-industrialists like myself from Ayrshire apparently are ranked lower than the average Highland family with three functioning teeth between them. Gutted.

I was going to propose a special category for expats from Ayrshire. Suffice to say you were off the scale.

All of this demonization of those , slightly , less fortunate than the residents of Stockbridge would be funny ....if it was funny.

Certain areas of Fife I'll give you that. Rosyth, Methil and Kirkcaldy for example. I suppose you could tar vast swathes of glenrothes too. However Dunfermline is a paradise these days.

Short but good article this morning about inter district rugby filling the gap between clubs and pro teams.
If this happened and they did a home & away league that would mean 6 games each season. Is this enough or would it be better to enter them into the British & Irish cup? I would personally prefer this idea as a way for fringe pro players and promising club players to get game time at a good standard.
As is brought up in the article, the fixture list is a problem. The solution may be to lift the selected players out the club system for part of the season.

The problem here is the clubs - they won't be happy to have less games to accommodate the district games, or missing their players for part of the season.

I agree. I get the feeling the SRU now don't see the clubs as part of that area after the super league idea was kicked out. That would be implied if the disrtrict system sits on top of it and it was certainly implied by the youth structure changes last month.
My impression is that they will be used as a tool for getting as many kids as possible playing rugby then the other systems will kick in when the decent players are identified.

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread VIII
I see the article on the Beeb re: Nel and Fife wanting Solomons to stay. I'd be in favour, but what does concern me are the comments from Fife:
The problem is every other team knows exactly what we're going to do as well, thus our constant failure to break teams down when their pack fronts up.
I'm 100% in favour of giving Solomons two more years, but there are two conditions:
(a) he appoints a specialist skills and backs coach next season
(b) he starts the contingency planning now as to his successor(s) - we need to make sure that when he does leave, we don't go back to square one
And Fife added: "It always takes a while when a new coach comes in.
"We're a really tight team, we know what each other brings to the game.
"We know the game plan inside out. Before we go on the pitch we almost know exactly what is going to happen in each area of the pitch.
"Alan has brought a lot of confidence, as well. It's a good place here now.
"The boys respect him highly as a coach and as a man so hopefully he'll be around for the future of Edinburgh and he's going to bring the best out of us if he does stay."

Bread Meats Bread or Meat Bar would be my suggestion

I haven't been, but "Meat Bar" sounds like gastronomic utopia.

By the way, Scotland season tickets on sale to general public later today: Italy (August) and England/France (6 Nations).

Don't all rush at once now people....!
The France game is a week after my wedding. Luckily I have a rugby loving bride to be and she's happy for us to go to it if we're in Edinburgh!

This strikes me as the key caveat, or have you explained to your fiance that honeymoons make little economic sense.......

She recently dropped the bombshell that the honeymoon is apparently meant to be organised and paid for by the groom.
I hope she likes Butlins.
Joking aside we'll probably do a mini-moon somewhere straight after for 4 or 5 days, and be one of those couples that everyone hates that asks for money towards their honeymoon instead of presents so we can have a probably holiday later in the year!

From my few times braving it through to Glasgow the place I quite like going to is the West Brewery. German themed, great beer and very good food & no Neds!

I actually quite like that approach, and wish we had done it! I'd far rather throw some money into the pot for a decent holiday, than buy cutlery or plates from John Lewis!

That's the approach we are going for as well, mini break somewhere in scotland then have a proper holiday and get the wedding guests to chip in instead of presents.

Absolutely. To be fair it is becoming the modern way now - gone are the days where you got married then moved in together into a new house, requiring lots of new stuff. Most people have been living together for a while by the time they get married, and already have plenty stuff! I literally have no more room in the kitchen.
It is more the older generation that are likely to have issues with it - the like giving actual presents!

I don't know about you, but this wedding planning milarky has been a piece of p!ss so far - don't see why everyone gets so stressed about it! We've pretty much everything done.
Well, I say we...

I dragged half my wedding party over to another country for my wedding (well more the Mrs's wedding than mine), so didn't do gifts on top of that. However, I would have gone down the contribution to a honeymoon pot.
Makes far more sense and means folk don't need to think about what to get you.

Yesterday morning I had the pleasure of transferring the last payment for Princess daughter's honeymoon from my bank account. If the assorted parasites and ne'erdowells (and that's just the bride's family) that they have invited don't dig deep I shall be subsisting on a diet if beans and crackers for the foreseeable.
But it doesn't matter as herself and Feckless Rogue are so looking forward to a fortnight in Florida.

1. Book room facing the water at:
Hotel du Lac
Varenna
Lake Como
2. Get a cheap flight to Milan.
3. Get picked up by Claudio(http://www.claudiobellagiocomo.com/) and get driven to the hotel via one of the loveliest roads in the world. (I would hope it's pretty obvious that this is a personal recommendation and I have nothing to do with the business.)
4. Happy wife, happy life.

I spent my honeymoon on the West Coast of Scotland and Orkney. I don't think I'd have survived a flight after the wedding!
I should probably start putting money aside for BabyfES's wedding already, although hopefully the stupid tradition of the bride's father paying for everything will well and truly be dead and buried by that point in time (not that Mrs fES' family ponied up any cash for our wedding.....). Either that or she won't get married - I'd be cool with that.....

The Italian Lakes is right up there on our list!
I might stop at the Limo hire though...
