Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread VIII
No party represents me anymore. I'm a member of a political party but have become disillusioned with them, no points for figuring out which one it is.
What I want is a political party with the following Values:
1. The UKIP's defence policies
2. Labour's socialism
3. The Tory's economic responsibility
4. The SNP/Plaid's ideals for greater powers for Wales and Scotland without sacrificing the union.
5. A pledge to assist people in need across the world
6. Closer ties with Europe
I could go on but I won't. Too many parties are trying to hug the middle ground and I don't trust the SNP with the economy or defence so I have no real choice that suits me in this election.
I am wary of getting into political debates here. They are frowned upon and I don't want to put GC and RDW in a difficult position.

I asked him why his party was encouraging people to vote green when their policies are anathema to his party's bedrock principal of drilling as much oil as possible from the North sea and supporting the Scottish Economy. He had no answer.
So I then quizzed him on the fact that the SNP had been lobbying for a cut in North Sea taxes, for companies like BP and Exxon who's profits run into Billions of pounds each year and asked if this was "sexy socialism" in action.
He then left my doorstep.
My door doesn't stay open long enough for them to ask anything.
Interestingly though I had a very nice Jehovahs Witness man at my door last night trying to flog a magazine. He seemed far more credible!

Absolutely. The problem in my constituency though is that means voting Lib Dem! Saying that our Lib Dem MP has been pretty good. He's also pushing to get better Broadband and, given how long my Playstation takes to download an update, that will go down very well.
First world problems eh!

Playstation is a Neds console. XBOX One is where it's at, and IMO you are never too old to own one. My dad is 63 and still jumps on for the occasional game of BF4.

I gave up computer games when I left Uni. Not because I wouldn't still enjoy the odd game, but mainly for two reasons: (a) CM2 was making me even more anti-social than my natural inclination, and (b) I now barely have time to feed myself and go to the toilet, let alone spend hours on such things.

True though, the neds love a bit of Fifa, Gran Turismo et al.

More like it!
I'm making a big deal of this, but I genuinely don't really care! I'm not that much of a gamer, but I do like playing a bit of CoD or Assassins Creed for a bit of a release every now and then.
Also, my missus has discovered CoD - it is much better her taking her anger out on some poor 12 year old boy in France by shooting his face off online than some poor 28 year old from Edinburgh by shouting at him!

Nothing so crushing as being beaten at an FPS by a 12 year old, ok I take it back, being beaten at an FPS by your die hard "pro gamer" sister is even worse.
what makes it slightly more bearable is that she is a card carrying member of the gay and lesbian alliance.

I'm disappointed. I've not had anyone from a political party at my door - just 10 Labour flyers.
I wanted to have a list of 10 Malcom Tucker quotes to hand and let any SNP person choose a number between 1 and 10 to receive their free Tucker insult.
Still waiting...

Can you imagine how confusing it must be when you have both that card and your Edinburgh Rugby Supporters Club card in your wallet? It's like the 'myWaitrose' and National Trust for Scotland membership cards in mine. So confusing.RuggerRadge2611 wrote:what makes it slightly more bearable is that she is a card carrying member of the gay and lesbian alliance.
During IndyRef I had a few Yes Scotland canvassers on my doorstep. Delightful folk, they were. The sort that you can just wind up and let go, sustaining them with the occasional 'Uh-huh', "Oh right, is that so?" and a "Really, a secret oil field? Off the Western Isles, you say? Well I never."
I once kept a guy at my door for a solid half-hour until I told him that I had to head out, reached behind my door for my giant bag of Better Together leaflets and went off on my rounds through George Square. Good giggles.

Bit of sad news - just read this on the BBC:
$1bn payout plan for concussed NFL players
"The NFL expects 6,000 of its approximately 20,000 retired players to develop Alzheimer's disease or dementia in their lives."
That's 30% of NFL players will get Alzheimer's or dementia. Given the similarities between American Football and Rugby (in terms of collisions), it's quite a daunting thought.
As a side note, dementia affects 7% of people over the age of 65 (http://www.alzheimers.org.uk/site/scripts/documents_info.php?documentID=102)

You are forgetting though that in American Wendy ball, they nut each other with helmets on with regular frequency. We don't get anywhere near as many concussions in rugby.

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread VIII
Tiger, I think American Football is living proof of the balsa wood car theory: if cars were flimsy and easily broken we would feel less safe and then drive more carefully, which would lead to fewer accidents. Wrap a person up in Kevlar armour and a helmet and tell them to run head first into 18 stone of muscle and bone and most people would do it. Put them in vest and pants and they would feel far more vulnerable and be less likely to do it.
One of the biggest changes in my playing time (couldn't bring myself to say career) is shoulder pads and head guards: If I'm flanking I must have my head guard on. Without it I tend to think twice before putting my head into a ruck. Does wearing it make me more or less safe? More or less risk averse?
Also we must remember that it does not need to be a blow to the head to cause a concussion. Whiplash can be just as harmful, neurologists say that what we used to call being punch drunk is often down to the soft brain tissue slamming against the skull when the head is jerked violently to the side as much as by the blow to the head. If you look at players receiving "big hits" while running flat out there must be some element of whiplash there.
I'm not sure what the answer is but I am sure that Gatland type coaches who pick the biggest and heaviest fifteen and tell them to run straight at their opposite number and keep doing it for 80 minutes are putting young men, and women, at risk of serious long term brain damage. GC and Fes will know better than I but if an employer does this regularly then are they not failing in their duty of care to their employee?
I predict that the American court case will , sooner or later, have repercussions worldwide.

I must say that, unless there are really sound medical reasons, I wouldn't want school kids wearing scrum caps. As Jimbo says, does a scrum cap give young players a feeling of invincibility? I remember reading a while ago that gumshields actually were more effective in preventing concussions. Don't know if it is true, though

Gumshields definitely help the severity of head knocks - I know from personal experience!
Scrum hats do not.

There's research I've read in my job that points to more head injuries when wearing Protective headwear. The theory being that players either a) are more fearless and take less natural care, putting their head where they normally wouldn't (as mentioned above) or b) they tend to use their head as a striking/driving force in contact sports as the wearer feels protected. Will try to dig out a link.

Do you mean "reduce" the severity of headknocks as opposed to "help"?RDW_Scotland wrote:Gumshields definitely help the severity of head knocks - I know from personal experience!

I think I do but you are a back and so prone to moments of irrationality.
Are you a doctor, Griff? Your thoughts do support the "invincible" theory, though. That said, kids will copy what they see on TV - remember the gloves with no fingers and those ridiculous nose plasters that were first seen in the WC when it was in SA. They were supposed to let more oxygen in when you breathed so improved your efficiency round the park. Ok, so a silly little plaster could overcome the effects of years of excessive Guinness and pizza?

Doctor? I wish! No, uni lecturer in sport so read a lot of research (and do some!). My colleagues are carrying out some interesting research into concussion in rugby at the moment. But I remember reading the headgear studies a few years back when researching something for a sports injuries module.

I really do not get why folk think a scrum cap will save you from concussion!
Concussion is when the brain is moved inside the skull
A scrum cap does not stop your brain form being moved in a collision!
Scrum caps are designed to protect your ears in a scrum/maul. They are not crash helmets!

Well given you Gloucester fans stole a lot of the Edinburgh tickets, you may not be very successful in your request!
Joking aside, I think the deadline for Edinbrugh season ticket holders buying tickets has passed, so I think it is a free for all now. There was a time where you could order them if you had a Scottish postcode and had ordered from the SRU previously.

Well if they decide to not wash for the next week they will come close!
I can't help but feel we're not being overly helpful towards our Gloucester friend...

The game must surely be sold out by now, meaning you can probably only buy on Stubhub for about £10,000 per ticket.
On a non-rugby but related theme, did you see the fiasco over the Mayweather vs PacMan bout?? Tickets sold out online in minutes for between US$1000 - US$5000, only to appear seconds later on StubHub for up to US$90,000!!!!
Surely only a few oligarchs and champagne socialist SNP members/trade union leaders can afford those sorts of prices.....

It's a proper nonsense! Tickets should only be resold for the value of the ticket!
I'm a fan of the process of having to bring proof of your address along to use your ticket!

Who do people think has the potential to win the Sam Hidalgo-Clyne "Zero-to-Hero" award for next season (i.e. be on the periphery, but rise to become one of the club's top players and in with a shot of a Scotland start)?
I reckon Damien Hoyland.

I think by the next 6 Nations Stuart McInally will be the Edinburgh and Scotland hooker.

I would be reluctant to say any Edinburgh players, given Solly's reluctance to rotate his squad and give fringe players a chance.
Saying that, I would really like to see more of Chris Dean, and given our centres are as injury-proof as Rory Lamont, hope he could get a chance. But then it's only Scottish centres who are permanently injured - Strauss seems to be indestructible...
Magnus Bradbury is also a possibility but we have a number of decent back row options.

Not with Dickinson and Sutherland in the squad. I've heard good things, but I don't see him in an international jersey for a while.
Bradbury isn't a bad shout, but with Denton, Du Preez, Coman and Manu in the squad for next season I think it'll take a few injuries for Bradbury to get proper game time. Perhaps season after for Bradbury. No doubt once Du Preez qualifies to play for Scotland he'll do a Maitland and leave Scotland for a more lucrative contract, and that may open a slot for Bradbury.
