It depends on how long you have got and how old your kids are, but I would recommend the following:
- Park at the long stay carpark behind Waverly train station
- Walk up to the castle esplanade for the view and pictures in front of the castle (15 minute walk from car park)
- Head to the National Museum on Chambers street for a decent visit (5mins from castle) and either have lunch at the museum or one of many places in the area
- Walk down the royal mile (make sure you stop at the fudge shop) and then go to see the palace, the parliament and Arhtur's Seat at the bottom of the Royal Mile
- Short walk back to the car park (10 mins).
- On the way back to Loch Tay stop in South Queensferry to see the 3 Forth bridges and get some great pictures and an ice cream
Sorted!

Would agree with the suggestion the others have recommended for things to see and do.
For parking I would say the best and most reasonable place to park close to the city centre is Royal Terrace and London Road.
Royal Terrace especially has lots of available spaces and is a lot more reasonable than most of the other streets in Edinburgh.
London Road is £1 per hour for the first 4 hours and then 30p per hour after that I think. Royal Terrace is about £1.50 an hour and there is no time limit on those.

On a different note, mismatch of the season is happening on Saturday in the Aviva premiership. Jack Gilding starting at tight head for London welsh against Mako Vunipola for Saracens. I think there could be a high scrum penalty count!

Or you can park at Ingliston for free and get Edinburgh's biggest, most expensive tourist attraction into town for £1.50pp single or £4 for a day also including buses. Also saves the hassle of driving in Edinburgh!
Alternatively, there are numerous NCP car parks which are virtually daylight robbery but if there's a few of you and you aren't going far, is not really any more than park & ride.

Speaking of things to do in Edinburgh, a walk along the Water of Leith can be nice & peaceful, see all the Gorlemy statues and it'll lead you to the National Gallery of Modern Art.
Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread VIII
Ohhh, also if you want to see one of Scotland's rarest sights, head to 31 Minto Street...

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread VIII
As an alternative you could:
Get the number 30 bus to craigmiller. Have a walk about there and you will almost think you are in Glasgow.
In craigmiller, hop on the 14 to Leith. A walk about there and you'll think you are in Dundee
Hope back onto the 14 and get to Granton. You'll now think you're in Aberdeen.
It's like a wee tour of Scotland in one day!

Tram likely to break down or stop after wiping out a cyclist or two, so get a very expensive taxi or Mrs Van will get a touch tetchy.

Joking aside, the bus is probably quicker than the tram!

Ah I see. They are good to get the background and history of everywhere but things generally are close together. I'd still recommend it though.

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread VIII
So Edinburgh and Glasgow have some difficulties with injuries. Recently it was in the second row for Glasgow, now the back row for Edinburgh. At both times, however, each club had some spare players that could have done a job in the other team.
It got me wondering. What if fringe players were still paid the same, but were unattached to a specific club. So someone like James Eddie (or Tommy Spinks, Will Bordill) or Alex Toolis still trains with Glasgow/Edinburgh but there is a common resource pool so that if required, they can be called in.
I don't know if rules would allow it, or if this already exists with loans, but it just seems daft that Hilterbrand is getting a bench spot vs Leinster whilst promising players like Bordill and Spinks are merely spectating over at Glasgow.

Well I hope those idiots at the SRU have taken note. Scotland sevens just won all three games and top their group, including beating England at Twickenham. It all went very quiet at that point in the stadium at that point!
Damion Hoyland absolutely on fire scoring 5 tries including a hat trick against the auld enemy! Blake and Farndale also made their debuts and both scored tries against Kenya. A pretty good day all round!

Hello Scottish people. Just stopped by to say well done Glasgow on a fine season, topping the table and getting a home semi.
Don't want to leave anyone out on a joint thread, so well done to Edinburgh too for making the Challenge Cup final.
Things are looking good for Scottish rugby I feel. The Welsh regions need to pull their sock up (as always).

Thanks, both teams in their own ways have had decent seasons, but neither has won anything yet and that is what counts. Hopefully Glasgow will lay that one to rest soon!

Cheers Griff!
It's been a good positive season for the Dragons too, onwards and upwards. Glasgow fans must be thankful you beat Leinster twice. Did Glasgow a huge favour as Leinster have been their biggest nightmare in playoff in recent years

What are you talking about? Edinburgh won a microscopic pewter jug earlier this year. That makes them absolutely bloody fantastic, don't you know.BigGee wrote:Griff wrote:Hello Scottish people. Just stopped by to say well done Glasgow on a fine season, topping the table and getting a home semi.

Big Tacky now free to travel overseas as his visa issues are now sorted out.
SMH is reporting that his deal with Edinburgh is 3 years, which is the first time that I recall reading that:

NSW Waratahs: Taqele Naiyaravoro cleared to travel overseas
Date May 15, 2015
Georgina Robinson
The Department of Immigration was the unlikely bearer of potentially season-saving news for the Waratahs this week.
It finally approved a sports visa for stand-out NSW winger Taqele Naiyaravoro on Thursday, ending a diabolical state of affairs that effectively forced the defending champions to use separate "home" and "away" wingers in pursuit of their title defence this year.
The visa means Naiyaravoro is sponsored by the Waratahs and free to leave Australia, which means he can travel with his teammates to South Africa for two tough clashes with the Lions in Johannesburg and the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein next month.
The visa issue had kept him grounded for the Waratahs' trips to Dunedin and Wellington earlier this season. Teammate Peter Betham well and truly stepped up to the mark on each of those occasions, but Naiyaravoro's unique high-impact game looks set to play a key role in the team finishing their season in winning fashion.
His steam-rolling run down the right wing to score a try in Perth was the only bright spot in the Waratahs' otherwise forgettable performance last week, proving again his unique ability to bust through defences where others cannot.
Minutes after telling Fairfax Media he put his faith in "the man upstairs" on Thursday, Naiyaravoro was advised by Waratahs chief executive Greg Harris that his visa had been approved.
"It means a lot for me to be able to travel with the team. It is a huge relief," Naiyaravoro said. "It doesn't mean I feel comfortable – the pressure is on me to perform week in, week out. I will give my all, I want to finish the season strongly. It is such a relief."
What is still not certain is where that leaves his plans for next year. Signed on a three-year deal with Edinburgh, Naiyaravoro still needs to come up with a more permanent arrangement before he can leave Australia knowing he is free to return any time. His application for a spousal visa with his Australian wife is the next piece of the puzzle.
Given Thursday's developments, there is every indication the Waratahs could be working on something to keep him in Sydney long-term. Watch this space.
On a more sobering note, it appears the Waratahs have narrowed their focus to topping the crowded Australian conference, as the reality of their precarious title defence sinks in.
While the champions have always been at pains to avoid explicit talk of going back-to-back this season, or building a dynasty, there has always been that inference.
Not any more. With five games left to save their season and space at a premium at the top of the competition log, the seventh-placed Waratahs realise they can no longer afford to think big picture. To invoke one of their favourite phrases, they have not earned the right.
"At the moment we're just trying to win the conference and put ourselves in a [good position]," NSW veteran Stephen Hoiles said.
"We've been pretty open about not talking about winning the thing again. We didn't speak about it last year. It's certainly harder, everyone's after us, we've just got to improve mentally where we're at. We've just got to win that conference. I hate saying it but we can't look two weeks ahead. You drop a game now and you're in a lot of trouble, so the Sharks – like last week – is the most important game of our season.
Hoiles was named to start at No.8 in place of South African Jacques Potgieter, who will miss a showdown with his new team, the Sharks, due to an injured sternum.
Otherwise, the defending champions will line up against the 11th-placed Sharks with a side virtually unchanged from the one that built the beginnings of something special in 2014.
The "Shorks" are in town and Springboks winger Odwa Ndungane had some interesting comments to make about the selection dilemmas facing Wallabies coach Michael Cheika under the Australian Rugby Union's new eligibility rules.
The new ARU law allows for overseas-based players with 60 Test caps and seven non-consecutive years of play in a professional side in Australia to be considered. Ndungane, who has worn the Springboks jersey eight times, said he believed the three players affected by the change – Toulon's Matt Giteau and Drew Mitchell and Lyon's George Smith – were all worthy of a call-up this year.
"I would leave [the decision] for the coach ... But I mean, those are players who are playing with a lot of experience. All three have played in World Cups," he said.
"Drew Mitchell had an outstanding Heinekin Cup final. He scored a lovely try as well. It just shows you what class they have. They are players you can never write off.
"If they do get picked I am sure they will do very well for Australia."
In big news for the Rebels – and their current financiers, the Australian Rugby Union – the Melbourne club have secured private owners.
The Rebels are understood to have signed a heads of agreement with the Imperium Group, led by well-known Melbourne businessman Andrew Cox and sports entrepreneur Peter Sidwell on a deal that will take effect on July 31.
Cox and partners, who are understood to specialise in brand management and business turnarounds, have teamed up with Sidwell, the former owner of A-League club Melbourne Heart (now Melbourne City), met with the playing group and coach Tony McGahan this week.
It is a major boost for the club, who who are turning around their on-field fortunes under McGahan but have sucked up more than $9 million in life support from the ARU.

Interestingly, the Scotsman says he's probably off to Glasgow!
It also revealed that Glasgow has a bigger budget than Edinburgh, with the SRU backing the better horse in a chance to win something.
Hopefully that means Glasgow's big name signings are yet to be announced...

Tim Visser, who is off to Harlequins in the summer, has not even tried to hide his frustration at this conservative style and the Waratah’s giant Fijian winger Taqele “T” Naiyaravoro will be wasting his time shivering on Edinburgh’s flank which is where the Australian papers have him headed. But Glasgow want him and they appear to have got their man despite suggestions that “T” might yet turn out for the Wallabies.

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread VIII
It's a Morrison piece and therefore it is a standard hatchet job on Edinburgh and Scottish rugby. It's full of inaccuracies to support his negative biased view, e.g.
Dell and Berghan haven't played therefore failures - ignoring the fact that both of them have been injured for most of the season. Dell still is!
Blaauw a failure - agreed, but ignores the fact that Solomons recognised that and got rid of him several months ago.
Any praise is also a failure;
"The club’s league position has remained as changeable as the Bass Rock over the past 12 months, although the number of wins has jumped from seven to ten, which is progress of a sort."
The Scotsman really should stop publishing his poor biased pieces.

I honestly don't believe we'll ever see him turning our for Glasgow or Edinburgh. Every article seems to mention how NSW are looking for ways to keep him, and with his stock seeming to be rising pretty rapidly I just can't see him actually going through with a move to sunny Scotland. The whole situation is pretty bizarre, but then its certainly not a first with Scottish rugby, just ask Stephen Larkham!

Agreed - if one of the top SR teams are trying their best to keep him, and no doubt playing for the wallabies eventually would come into that, why would he want to move to Scotland??

Money, in a word. They just don't pay that well out there. He is still well down the Wallabies pecking order as well, even more so now that they have relaxed the rules.
If he has signed a contract, then it is hard to see how he is going to get out of it, as he is not likely to get capped this side of the WC.

I hope Glasgow aren't planning on replacing Matawalu with Seniloli. Just watched that cook up from yesterday Treviso's game, almost as bad as that Japanese guy in the sevens a couple of years back!

Don't think we will see Taqele over on these shores. A couple reports from Australia I have read say he has decided he wants to play for Australia and Cheika has told him he will be picked in their training squad at least.
His contract has been signed with edinburgh for three years with the clause added that if he does get picked by the wallabies its null and void.
If the SRU and edinburgh had any sense they should just tear up his contract now. Coming to scotland is obviously not his main objective so Edinburgh should go find a player who is keen to play for the club!

That's something of a silly clause - does that mean his contract can be torn up at any time of Cheika has a bad slice of pizza one day and just decides to add him to a subs bench?
I would certainly be annoyed if we stopped looking for other wingers and missed an opportunity to sign someone good because we expect this deal to be honoured, because I agree, there's a very real danger that he won't.
He scored an eye catching try last week, hence all of the copy about him, but to be honest, is Cheika really going to pick him before Speight, Mitchell, Ioane, O'Connor, Cummins, AAC, Tomane or even English? Surely not. Scoring tries is not usually a problem for this side.
It's all a bit of a bugger's muddle. Entirely unlike the SRU. I mean, obviously.

Sounds like the SRU have taken a punt on him early on and since his stock has risen he's being pulled in different directions.
I agree that they should just cut their losses and terminate the deal (if they can) if he's starting to mess us about.

Has anyone even told him that it rains quite a bit over here and the tram service isn't usually all that reliable?RDW_Scotland wrote:Sounds like the SRU have taken a punt on him early on and since his stock has risen he's being pulled in different directions.

I see Solomons is targeting a centre with x-factor, who could it be?

We've already got Will Helu from wasps who is a big strong running 13 / wing - hopefully he will come good.

I hope this 'x factor' extends beyond 'solid defence' and 'leadership'. Saying that I'm sure he's scouring South Africa for Strauss Mk2 as we speak

Re Nayairavoro, do you think one wallaby cap would be enough to make him want to stay in Australia? After three years in Scotland, he'll no doubt get quite a few 6N games and autumn tests, and maybe a RWC. If he's good enough, after 3 years he could potentially go to a decent French club. Or... the odd one or two wallaby caps, playing in super rugby, then maybe France. Or Japan.
Re Solomons on getting a world class centre, Huw Jones seems to have dropped down the pecking order (slightly, just a bench place now) so he might be on the cards more now. I'm wondering if any of Alex Grove, Max Evans, Duncan Taylor might be in AS's sights? Thing is, it's all very well getting a decent centre, but the tactics and style of play must allow them to play well.

I watched the Luvvies throw away a winning position with 8 minutes to go against the Ladyboys yesterday.
However, Hamish Watson continues to impress. I do think he is being played out of position and would be a much better player if he played approximately 40 miles to the west.

If Nayairavoro does come to Scotland I am sure it will be to Glasgow and not Edinburgh. Why would Glasgow have let DTH go if they did not have an idea who was going to replace him and it is not as if Edinburgh are short of wingers (or even know how to use them) in any case.
Edinburgh would be far better served by trying to pick up a decent centre. That and a FH is where they are short!

Unfortunately we decided to forget how to tackle. Or, more accurately, Strauss and Cuthbert did.
Joking aside, I would like to see what Watson and HidalgoClyne would do in that Glasgow team! Just for one game like...

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread VIII
Doesn't look like Nayairavoro is going to happen with Wallabies coach Michael Cheika talking like this:
"It would be naive of me not to have a look at him,"
"You'd have to say he's right up there. He's a profile that we don't have, that big type of winger.
"So he's right up there challenging with the other wingers that have been performing and who have performed for Australia already on last year's spring tour."
If he reaches his potential then it may turn out to be a very stupid move to include the get out clause. He may very well go to the World Cup and have a stormer, in which case we'd have a proved Wallaby heading our way. So he couldn't play for Scotland, meh, we'd have got him relatively cheap.

He maybe wouldn't have accepted the contract without one.

I think at the moment he maybe would only get one wallaby cap just so they tie him to Australia. Long term though he could go on to win a lot of caps for them. He is still a work in progress as he is pretty raw in Union. With the potential he has though Australia won't want to make the same mistake they did with nemani nadolo.
Cheika brought him to the tags from west Tigers rl and seems to have a good relationship with him. A few weeks ago he would have been quite far down the wing pecking order in oz but the last couple weeks with his performances he has leapfrogged quite a few & will now probably be about 5th choice being behind cummins, speight, Mitchell and Tomane.
He is married with a young kid and a lot of his family are in the Sydney area so might be playing on his mind about leaving his family behind too.
If he doesn't come the sru will certainly be able to find a world class winger for the huge amount they are offering Taqele.
