The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the Tommy Bowe photo on the bar. That's a banning offence
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

Ah there you go, an excuse to eat more. But I meant what I said about the stress. I might be stating the obvious, but if there's one bit of advice I could give anyone it's to talk about whatever bothers you. With whom is up to you, but just talk about it.
If only I could take that advice myself sometimes

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
In seriousness, Dreamer, I really know what you mean, I am losing a lot of weight for the same reason. Not eating enough and not at regular times recently. Also volatile sleeping-patterns dont help. I think that is key to good health. I am under strict orders from my Doc to fix my eating times and to exercise regularly. This will help settle the sleeping patterns. Let the body know "where it is" sotospeak. It's common-sense really. But, sure we all fight that. Some more than most.
Stress is an awful dangerous, creeping, beast. Watch that darlin. Sez yerman. I need to watch it too.

I think it's time for me to get back to the gym now. Final weeks of Uni do not make for a healthy lifestyle. Disturbed sleep patterns, little time to cook properly or exercise, tendency to snack as ye work. Need to be fitter...

Gibbo - fear not, I've been down this road before so I know all the warning signs. Need to get myself back to the gym asap I reckon. Hope you get yourself sorted too
Cari - ah tis just work that's bothering me, and I rant enough down the phone to my poor mam about that as it it! Already got myself filling out application forms again for something else. This job I have is just not worth the way it's making me feel.
Mick, thank you for the offer! I know what I need to do to sort myself though, just need to actually go ahead and do it now!

Cheers Dreamer pal.You too Cari.
Its getting a lot better. My mate and I go out on the bikes every day and I am eating like a horse now. I am going through a few things that are holding me back from a few dreams of mine. That is where the stress is coming from at the minute. Not having worked for a year, after 30-odd years non-stop, kind of affects this. Im liking the way we all discuss things openly and mind each other in here.
I'll be grand when de boat comes in...

Gibbo that's great you've got someone else to go out on the bikes with, it always helps when there's someone else there to spur you on, and good one on the eating
I reckon I should just go and stay with my grandparents for a week, my Grandma LOVES trying to feed me up, I'm sure that'll sort me out no problem

Evening all. An interesting couple of questions back there. Going back 1,000 years I would have given the world education from There wasn't much of it unless you were involved in religion. Apart from the Chinese and Japanese who had civilisations that were already thousands of years old.
My rugby bugbear would also have to be the disciplinary process. The sheer inconsistency of the punishments for similar offences beggars belief. But what can you expect from cases being heard by different panels, often with a vested interest in the outcome from a national perspectiive. IRB sort it out.

I would disagree with you Hound. There was education, not altogether accessible by the hoi poloi, mainly for the rulers / leaders of society. But if you look at Ireland, anyone who had the intelligence to avail of it could become a bard or a file (poet). The course was seven years long and only the very best "graduated", but as I say - anyone could access it (as long as yuo were male ). The same rules applied for legal and medical training.
However, if the basis of your comment is England (rather than Britain) one of the unfortunate side effects of the Reformation in the 16th century was the almost complete destruction of the educational system, because education was undertaken by monks and nuns - and it wasn't all theology. As late as the end of the 18th century it was commonly held in England that everyone in the lower classes were ineducable. England was the last develped country in Europe to establish primary education for everyone (1870 Education Act). It had been established in France and Germany in the 1820s and 1830s and even in Ireland in the 1820s

Kia.
I know there was education of a sort but was unaware that it was widespread across Europe (for males). From England's perspective I guess that so long as the Industrial Revolution was bringing in money, and the empire was expanding, that was all that mattered to those in power.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Reading prospectuses for schools in the early 19th century is fascinating. For example, there was a girl's school run by nuns which had migrated to France from England when Catholicism was proscribed here. I will concede that this was a school for the daughters of wealthy landowners. It returned to England during the French Revolution. But whereas those who read Jane Austen might think that the only things girls were taught were the "accomplishments", i.e. fancy needlework, piano playing and singing, this school had a quite extraordinary curriculum. This included French and German, but rather than one or two periods a week, one day each week was designated "French" or "German" day. On those days those were the only languages spoken in the school. The girls were also taught geography, history, literature, religious studies, astronomy, latin and book-keeping, as well as the "accomplishments" Pretty high-powered stuff really.

Pretty high powered stuff indeed, and quite liberating for the girls who were able to study such subjects I would think. Languages have always been a favourite of mine, but it would take a big effort to improve my French and German via nightschool after a days work. Would love to do it though, and maybe add Italian and/or Spanish.

Evening all
Chef, there are rumours circulating around London Irish that we are close to signing Sergio Parisse. Personally I don't believe it, but wondered if there is anything floating around in France along the same lines?
Also, you may have seen this article before but I will post it anyway, as it is a good example of how players should conduct themselves, and another reason why I believe that he will go down as an all time legend of the game...

As a front man no one tops Freddy Mercury Didn't go too much on Queen stuff when they went 'pop style' but I saw them live twice. Mercury could hold an audience in the palm of his hand. Fav live band would be Zep in their pomp - 4 hour shows with no support. Awesome, and what a range of songs.
I can almost hear 'The Battle of Evermore' live now.

Evening all, just a quick check in. We lost netball tonight, only had 6 players which made defending hard work (the reshuffle of positions required to cover didn't help either). But we managed to hold their winning margin down to 7 goals, when they needed to beat us by 19, so we're in the semi-finals next week.
Got home to an email from a mate asking if I want to join him on a trip to Beunos Aries next September to watch the Argentina vs NZ 4 nations game. Well worth a look
Lastly, for those watching the Wales vs Baabaas game, the BBC is running the Alternate Rugby Commentary on red button, featuring the Jedi himself with Rick O'Shea.
Hobo, a Tweet out to @jedthian might be worth some PR.

Gibbo, maybe it's because I never saw Springsteen live. Dunno, but I think he just went for chart hits more than anything else. Kind of put me off a bit after his early stuff. Ya know that 'I was listening to him/them before he/they made it big' snob thing we (mostly) all used to have back then. Or was it just me

Hound,
I know what you mean. I saw him in London in 1977, I think. ;-) With the E Street band. It was incredible. He was the best live act in the World then. Played for hours, when others played for 1 and half/2 hours and feiced off. He was raw and the energy from him was a sight to behold.
Since the 80's and with the advent of MTV, he has gone a bit Byran Adams. Im in full agreement with you. It's not just you man. But, like Freddy M, he was great in his pomp.

Kiwi, well done in the Netball man. Great show making the semis with a weakened team. Shows true-grit. Keep us updated on it. If you win it, bring the Trophy back to de Pub and we'll celebrate.
Best live performance you've ever seen? Led Zep took some beating for me. Rory Gallagher and the Stones too. God, why do I ask myself awkward questions? Ive seen too many, in various states, to make a clear judgement.
Loved Stevie Nicks in HER prime though.
She really let loose in this one. Check the end.

Ah, Gibbo, my friend, that entire weekend will live long in the memory. Great, great day, great match, great company, great friends. Brilliant.
