The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the Tommy Bowe photo on the bar. That's a banning offence
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

Morning all. Has anyone read this?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/rugby_union/welsh/13633364.stm
It's good of him to be honest, by my word Robin McBryde can mangle the English language (which is his second language, so maybe I shouldn't make a big deal of it).

Just some Leinster fan. Basically he just disagrees no matter what you say. Throws words like "you fool, you hypocrite" etc around. No matter what you say he'll just disregard it. Its funny really. Was telling me and Munsty yesterday about how he has an uncle who played for the wallabies and another who is the national team doctor and how because he has dual nationality he can criticise NZ for poaching Fijians

Glas a du wrote:You do attract that sort of poster Stag, no offence like, but they respond to firm views by disclosing their prejudices. That is not a WUM.
Which is fair enough really. Thats part of the boards for me and falls under banter rather than intentional wum etc.

red_stag wrote:AsLongAsBut100ofUs wrote:MBTGOG wrote:Maybe it's that they scrum at this level to get the ball where up here sometimes it seems to be to get a penalty.
Possibly, Munsty, but is that maybe because in the NH scrummaging is an art form in and of itself, whereas in the SH its simply a means to restarting the game? Hmmm ....
I wonder. Yet at test level the Kiwis and Saffers are well able to mix with us Northerners. Maybe Ireland would be more suited to SH competitions. If scrummaging is an art Ireland is basically a child scribbing with crayons
No, that's the commentators for you.
Think back to the ML final and the penalty try. Leinster had a hooker packing down as flanker. They expected a back row move and all three back rowers had their heads in the air and were not binding. Munster however went for the 8 man shove. Leinsters front row got in a right pickle because Heaslip wasn't binding his second rows and the flankers were not keeping their props in line. Yet everybody gives John Hayes the plaudits. In all honesty if they didn't demolish such a paltry effort by Leinster they should be ashamed of themselves.
The scrum is a process not an event. To get the upper hand you may have to repeat your tactics for an entire half before they come off. The simple rule is that 8 v 8 should not be a massacre, you can pack down so as to avoid being shoved back, but it does require your back row to be part of the effort.

Staggy - oooh I see...
Lucky - the BBC tend to take quotes out of context anyway just to make a story sometimes. I'd look for video of the press conference if there's any.

Staggy, I think that if you express views that some will regard as being extremely forthright and don't allow for the possibility that you may be wrong, then inevitably you will get some strong responses - but maybe that's just what you were after anyhew?!

Stag, did you not comment the other day about using the 6 Nations as training ground for Ireland and admitted later in the topic that you phrased it that way to get a rise?
That sure looks like it ticks a lot of boxes of what I would class as a WUM

lucky - I'm not sure that's so much McBryde messing up or just whoever typed up the article, knowing the Beeb, it's the person who wrote the article
You're right though, with English being his 2nd language, it wouldn't be surprising if he got a few things wrong though!

As - I am very very often wrong. I just rarely admit it You're a wise man!
Strong response were what I was after and I am happy with the debate it has created. I am just worried that it could create our first WUM and am trying to cool the flames. Maybe agreeing to disagree and looking to create a new discussion is the best way forward.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Prop, given that getting Glaws means we have to get another English team and that there are no English teams in pot 4 so we’d have to get Saints, Irish or Bath then I’d rather avoid them!
But sure, with the group we had last year I never thought we’d make it out, let alone as second seeds and definitely didn’t think we’d win the whole thing. So bring on all comers!

I just know if someone interviewed me in Welsh it would be full of mistakes.

More importantly to me is that if you had a chance you would give it a go. I would rather hear what you might think is imperfect welsh than you not use it given the opportunity.

No its good debate. As others have said its not a wum. Just frustration at the single minded way I post. I'm quite happy that by agreeing with one or two points and easing back things will be all Kool and the Gang. Find the parts of the posts I agree with and agree they are good points.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
True he does Glas.
And I should hopefully be speaking more Welsh from now on anyway, as my new flat mate is a fluent Welsh speaker (although for some reason we just speak english to each other).
Still his friends came over on Weds and we were all speaking in Welsh, the only problem I have is that they're all from North Wales and I'm really struggling with understanding the accent

My manger who has since left the company was a Brazilian woman. Her husband was a Gaelgóir (fluent Irish speaker). He taught her to speak Irish. She taught him Portuguese. They never spoke English at home. At a work dinner I chatted away as Gaeilge with them all evening.

Glas, that reminds me of HEC final day when Dreamer and I decided to speak Welsh to each other to get the practice. It was great - it had been so long since I'd spoken 'iaith y nef'

I haven't spoken Welsh to anyone for donkeys, I'd be very rusty now. I would like to learn Irish pronounciations too, but I've no way of practising them really.

I was very lazy learning Irish when I was younger and regret it now.
I do though think the whole system for teaching Irish is absolutely awful.

Well that's not fair on you Micky, but very generous of you to do that for your staff.
I was sat in front of two Munster fans at the Amlin, and their own commentary was really funny to listen to.
Prop - makes it interesting for teetotallers like me I can tell you!

Actually, I take that back, too harsh - Highlanders pressed for the first 10 mins of the second half and were v close to scoring on a couple of occasions, but a combination of excellent defence from Force plus the odd forward pass or dropped ball were their undoing. Force seemed to take huge heart from weathering that period of pressure and came back really strongly

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Munsty - I was the same with learning Welsh, well in secondary school anyway. I just got really lazy with it, and hated how so much Welsh was forced on me at school. Looking back I really regret not paying more attention then I did.
The biggest problem with the Welsh language now is that nearly every child can speak it as it is taught well in school, but very few speak it outside of the class room even though they are well capable of it. It's how we are able to break the habit of speaking English all the time I guess. Tis a tough one to see how to go about doing that though.

Cari - did you ever used to drink or have you always been teetoller?
I've a mate who has never drank - she just doesn't see point. I've another who only had his first drink when he was into his twenties.

Yeah As, I did think you weren't giving the Force enough credit. Though the Highlanders look tired and low on confidence.
On the subject of learning Irish, once kids get to 4th class in primary school, the teacher should only ever speak to them in Irish during Irish lessons.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Morning peeps,
And a fine morning it is here in sunny Surrey. Almost halfway through my day now having started at the crack of dawn, and then it's weekend. Yay!!!
The weekends rugby watching starts this evening for me with Bulls vs. Waratahs, big game in determining who makes the Super Rugby play offs that one.
I would love to be fluent in another language, other than complete gibberish that is. Sadly I skipped most French classes at school in order to go to the park. Still managed to get a C at GCSE level somehow. Vous ne savez pas comment j'ai réussi que je ne peux pas parler un mot de Français.

So there's nothing doing with the Muppet that hit my car mirror. Luckily it's only going to cost £150 or so. I know it's not a major crime, but it's so wrong that a person can get away with doing that. Next time, I'll go after them properly and shove my foot up their bum. Broken Britain.
Just renewed my season ticket for the Dragons. Going to miss some games because of Afghan, but I love the perks of saying I'm a season ticket holder somewhere and I think I'll probably do okay with games.
