Ive seen many bemused things in my time here but there is not a chance in hell Matty Phillips > Stewart Downing. Apart from a strike against Palace. He's been very mediocre.

Downing would be a good signing for about 12 teams in the Prem - great coup for Boro

Better long term option & was actually QPR's best player last year with countless assists & great wing play. Can see the lad improving too & why would we pay over the odds for Downing, the 31 year old in decline. Glad Pulis is in charge & not you.

Downing performed better last season than Phillips. Phillips ended the season stronger, so that's probably fresh in people's minds.

Phillips will be a good signing, and is probably a better fit for what we want, but I think Downing is a better player. Proven pedigree at this level over a number of years, something Phillips doesn't. Do think we are paying over the odds for Phillips too.
I know West Ham dropped off second half of the season, but Downing was one of their better players in that good 6 months at the start wasn't he Dolph? (admittedly playing more centrally)

Indeed - Phillips is decent on his day, but that day is often few and far between. He's worth a punt at a reasonable price tho

Considering i have you guys down for the bottom 3 this year im glad you are signing him He's just an up to date Tom Ince more suitable to the Championship then anything.

He's improving all the time, had the most Premier league assists in 2015 too & scored some great goals. Hardly average. He's a winger, so they are all inconsistent, even the greats, so to label him average is ridiculous, given his impressive showing last year. Downing is a good player, but he's ageing, we need long term options, not a quick fix for 12 months & then for him to turn around crying & asking to move up north.

Re: Summer Transfer Window Thread 15/16
Downing was excellent the first half of the season, he had a better first half to the season than Coutinho did second half but finishing strong and being a Liverpool player meant plaudits would only go to one.
However, it's been long known Downing wanted to leave this summer. The funny thing is the fact he has seemingly turned down Sunderland twice and will go to Boro. I know they're his club, but they're in the Champ, it's a Euros season and they're close enough for him to be near family. Think it shows a lot for the fallen reputation of Sunderland.
Downing is also a far better player than Phillips, and probably has 2 or 3 years in him, but Phillips does have room to improve, will not face physical decline and will keep some value in case he needs selling. Probably on a lot less wages too. £10m I've heard for Phillips though, seems steep.

A quick google search would prove you wrong Liam.

Phillips had 8 assists, the same as Downing.

So, I showed you a fact and you turn to insults. How old are you? 11? Grow up, you petulant little child. Facts are facts, Downing had more assists and more goals than your new favourite player.

Re: Summer Transfer Window Thread 15/16
You showed me a fact about the entire season 14/15, when my original point was about who had the most assists during 2015.
erm, you also stated downing had equal assists to Phillips (8), but now claiming Downing had more assists, which is it?
Phillips is not my favourite player at all, just would prefer him to the ageing Downing, as it's a better long term option & he will only improve. That is all.

Apologies, same assists but more goals. Still doesn't excuse any insults mate, remember the house rule - treat others as you want to be treated yourself. I know you've been told in the past because I told you.
You judge players over a full season to get a full picture, pointless judging someone over a shorter period because they were in form which is clearly what you're doing.

Re: Summer Transfer Window Thread 15/16
Phillips didn't break into the QPR side until January onwards, played very little or was starved of opportunities under the clueless Redknapp, that's why you can't judge Phillips over the entire season.

Maybe he wasn't good enough to break into the side

He didn't break into the QPR side because he was painfully average in a lower division and didn't earn a starting spot.

Re: Summer Transfer Window Thread 15/16
This. Redknapp is well known for giving players a chance if they're ready - and sometimes even when they're not, like Taarabt. Fact is, Phillips was bought for a considerable sum, failed to deliver, and only came into the side when QPR were basically down and their new manager (the dream coach...) was looking to make his mark.GSC wrote:He didn't break into the QPR side because he was painfully average in a lower division and didn't earn a starting spot.
For £8m I'd rather keep our money and play the £5m winger we've already bought and not played (McManaman).

Well it would appear we are in serious talks for:
PSV Captain Wijnaldum
Charlie Austin,
Florian Thauvin : Winger...not sure why when its defenders that are priority
Joel Matip Centre Back / DM - Cameroon International at Schalke
Oh and another player potentially coming in is 19-year-old Northampton Town striker Ivan Toney for £300,000?

Fed up with us getting crap money for players.
Only we could get 4.25 million for a guy with 12 goals and 8 assists in 37 games last season - when he has 3 years left on his deal.

Shifting the wage bill is a good thing, but we will just end up paying that to someone else.
I'd say he'd have cost another club 3 times as much minimum of we didn't on him.
Well do the same with all our other sales this summer, just annoying.

Phillips doesn't have 3 years left on a contract that pays him in excess of 100k a week either. That's why the prices are low, clubs have to take on similar salaries and know United are keen to shed them.

Agreed that we should have got more for Nani, but thats what happens when you have an inept moron Woodward handling transfers who can't negotiate for cr@p. Also we had to let them have a lesser fee so that they could afford his wages after that joke of a contract Moyes gave him

Perfectly understandable to clear the wage bill, before bringing in the replacements. It's only a week into the window being open.
@Azzy, you do know that Matty Phillips is going to be a hit at Albion after your constant criticism.
Iker Casillas has an offer from Porto on the table & Kevin Nolan is pondering a move back to Bolton
