Having said all that, Ferrer crushing Cilic today does make me a wee bit nervous.

Andy's problem is himself.Out of those in that so-called 'top four' he is the one most capable of beating himself. He can do this in various ways such as losing it mentally at key times (though he has been better in that area in the last couple of years), being too passive or building too many mental barriers that inhibit his game.

Re: French Open 2015 - Day 9
I would put Feeeerrrrreeeeerr as slight favourite - and total favourite if Murray goes into his shell
Murray CAN win in, but will be against the form book and on clay a tough one to do so
Fingers crossed (or as I found out today - thumps held in SA)

Haddie, if your guy loses this match, I will take that non-existent hat that you weren't able to lift in respect to my powers of logic, and eat it!

Not sure about that - Murray unbeaten on clay including 2 titles and a win over Nadal suggests that his clay court form is as good as anyone other than Djokovic. Ferrer has had a couple of tough matches, although won easily today - was he playing well or Cilic badly (or a bit of both)?
I think I'd make Andy a slight favourite, about 60/40.

Wow, that serve of Jack "Howitzer" Sock is really something.
With only minimal improvement, he might be able to win a game.

Re: French Open 2015 - Day 9
Federer looked favourite yesterday to me. Just one good shot from Monfils that took a set from him at 5-4 when it was on serve. However, Federer wins easily to extend his lead at RG over Monfils to 4-0.
Broadly speaking, we can divide this tournament into 1 phases.
Phase 1
Top players cruise past easier opponents.
Phase 2
Starts getting serious and interesting.
I think phase 1 ends today (not convinced by those that think Sock will push Nadal close).
Phase 2 starts tomorrow. Started from tomorrow we have 50/50 matches all of a sudden, Federer-Warwinka presumably tomorrow and maybe Tsonga-Nishikori, and then the day after presumably Nadal-Djokovic and Ferrer-Murray. I mean they are all pretty much 50/50 with the exception of Tsonga-Nishikori but even that should be competitive.
I am keeping an eye on events today, but just looks like a warm up for the next couple of days.

Dummy Half - The thinking about Ferrer being favourite against Andy M is that the Scot has never beaten the man I call the Duracell Bunny on clay.
His losses to Ferrer include one at the French, too. The annoying thing is that Ferrer will be brilliant against Murray and then subside against either Rafa or Djoko in the semi.

Re: French Open 2015 - Day 9
Ferrer has also had only 1 blip and in every other match has cruised through in straights.
Federer-Warwinka and Ferrer-Murray I am sat firmly on the fence. I am not trying to call those at all.
However I think Djokovic will beat Nadal (if they both win today) and Nishikori to beat Tsonga.

I also predict Murray-Ferrer will as much or even more of a giant, physical fight that Nadal-Djokovic, and that the winner of Nadal-Djokovic will actually turn up looking the fresher player in the semi.

Absolutely. I don't get this idea that Ferrer is some kind of giant of the game; I keep hoping he draws Federer so Roger can set the new record of 17 successive wins against another player.Haddie-nuff wrote:bogbrush wrote:If Murray can't beat Ferrer I despair for him.

I suppose Roger's still had the cupcake draw because he only got the #13 seed.

I do not think you will find that Andy underrates Ferrer at all given their previous history plus he has a great deal more respect for the little man

Got there eventually.
Cruel, I'm not watching but I imagine he could have taken an early one but has decided to allow Reechard time to settle in to playing 20 yards behind the baseline.

Re: French Open 2015 - Day 9
Gasquet's backhand is a thing of beauty... But is possibly one of the most inefficient shots in the history of the game. The sheer amount of time and room he needs to play it properly... It's the equivalent of having one of this land speed record cars for your daily commute.
