Afellay is swapping Barcelona for Stoke. I think that's as stark a contrast as you can get in Europe.

To be honest, he hasn't even been in Barcelona since 2012???? Injured for a long time, then loaned out ever since to Germany & then Olympiacos. It's a decent signing, but I think his best days are probably behind him.

Aren't they collecting Barca players at Stoke, is this the 3rd or 4th they've got?

Dreadful signing, and if he was going to any other club you'd be saying just how poor it was, especially as he was apparently demanding £80k a week wages a few weeks ago

Wouldn't call it a dreadful signing at all, he's a good player who should easily make the step up.
Would've liked us to be in for him tbh

Re: Summer Transfer Window Thread 15/16
I don't think so. What are you determining as a 'surprise'? We know they are a good team, comfortably a top 10 team, to do better than that & get top 6 is doubtful. The big miss will be the loss of the engine & powerhouse of N'zonzi, what are they left with centrally, Adam & Van Ginkel? I get they have fantastic offensive options, still not convinced they can go onto the next level though & perform at the same level they do away from home, as they do at home.

how can a surprise package be a top half finish, when they finished top half last year? I agree with John, doubtful to progress towards a top 6 & people are just getting carried away with 'name' signings, like Afellay, who in reality is a fading force & quite injury prone. They've also lost two big players.

They might be surprisingly good. I mean, they werent an amazing team last year but might pull off some big results and make more moves towards top 8. In a league where theres relegation, middle and top four fighters there cant be anything huge.

Also, Lukaku to United is scaring people. Depay posted a photo, and whilst it could and probably does mean International games when he says "see you soon" he could be the surprise?

Unless Belgium are playing Holland some time it's a very odd photo. He'd do well at OT if gets a decent supply tends to need about 5 chances to get 1 though.

I wouldn't have thought there's anything to it, worth pointing out that Depay and Lukaku in fact went on holiday together so it's probably more on a personal than professional level.

No Dingle should ever be allowed at our club, not Lescott, not Hennessey, and especially not a player like Sako, a mercenary who demands extortionate sums of money and only produces at lower levels. If we sign him I am straight down William Hills to put £5,000 on us going down.LiamB wrote:Bakery Sako is coming to WBA, three year deal. Quite pleased, not sure he will cut it though.

More news for WBA, you're on the verge of signing James Chester from Hull for around £7m/£8m.
Guest- Guest
Re: Summer Transfer Window Thread 15/16
Would of preferred Jonny Evans. Not sure signing relegated players does it for me + Sako is not even proven in the top flight, so is a risk. I can only see us being in & around relegation again this year, I don't think we've progressed at all.

Re: Summer Transfer Window Thread 15/16
Prices are so overblown it's unreal. If James Chester is worth that much, then Messi really is a £500m player. He's an average CB on a poor team. We have several CBs on our poor team already

Its somewhat unfair to label someone as someone who only produces in the lower levels before hes played at the top level.

Chester is decent enough. I'm perfectly happy to see West Brom shopping in a lower level market to us, although I'm not sure either of these are the signings they need.

All of them are. Lescott, Olsson, McAuley, Dawson. All band average. Chester is right in there.Roller_Coaster wrote:Azzy wrote:Prices are so overblown it's unreal. GSC, Sako played for St Etienne in Ligue 1 and was awful. He's also a ACON callup. Worthless.

It's probably more likely Lukaku and Depay know each other and now live within an hour of each other in the North West of England.

Re: Summer Transfer Window Thread 15/16
This is probably why many mid-table sides, including Newcastle fans at the time, didn't want Pulis appointed. Not so much for his style anymore, but he just seems to attract lower tier quality players, when it's a time, to actually start pushing towards progression & reaching out to bring in a better standard of player. This season is huge, in terms of survival, rivals are acquiring top players & pushing themselves away from being near the drop, whereas Pulis is signings Sako & Chester from the Championship & soon to sign a 34 year old, Rickie Lambert, who's level is really championship or below nowadays.

Re: Summer Transfer Window Thread 15/16
A year removed from scoring 28 goals over 2 seasons, Rickie Lambert is now a championship player. Carroll must be a league one player by now

West Ham are apparently after SM Caen defensive midfielder N'Golo Kante. The player left training early today and his manager has confirmed the club are talking to an English club.

We've signed Jose Angel Crespo.
Right back, but can play along the back 4 so i hear.
Adebayor looks a dead cert in the next day or so.

Personally think it's a great deal getting Adebayor. Yeah, he has his haters, but if Sherwood gets him motivated, like he did at Spurs, I see no reason why he can't be a success. Loan too, so you've still got some money in the bank & Spurs still paying a vast sum of his wages.

Re: Summer Transfer Window Thread 15/16
Adebayor is usually motivated for the first 3 months or so. Then he goes back to watching his bank balance.

Re: Summer Transfer Window Thread 15/16
To be honest, Benteke only look motivated for periods too. In terms of receiving £32m & getting in a like for like on a loan, it's pretty good business. If Adebayor turns up, he won't have a problem matching Benteke's goal scoring stats of the last two years. Just scoring over double figures (10 & 13) is not a frightening feat to match.

It's a good point but Steve Morison scored 10 goals in a Premier League season once. So you know, sh1t happens
