Re: Newcastle United News Thread!
Can't really expect to get huge money for him considering how little he has left on his contract. Player of the season in the Championship and maybe for 1st half of last season, but when he knew Liverpool were after him his form dipped and in some games he didn't play anywhere near how we'd expect him to. Best of luck to him though, have full faith that Pieters should be able to step up to the mark if he arrives.
As for Derdiyok I'm pretty sure we've been linked to him for ages now, but I'm not sure whether papers are just putting his name in because we've been watching his club for Barnetta. Another name being mentioned is Bentdner; wouldn't mind him as I think he has some talent, but his ego could cause problems.
Explain how the signing would be typical Pardew and hierachy please John. I've been fairly happy with Pardew's signings so far, fairly young players with a point to prove in English football that aren't costing the club an arm and a leg to keep. I'm not supporting a move for Derdiyok, it's hard to knock Pardew's transfer policy so far, especially when we haven't seem them play competitively.
EDIT: Tavernier sent on loan to Carlisle for 1 month, with the option to extend it. Hopefully he, LuaLua and Richardson get to play regular football this season.

I honestly thought you would have made a marquee signing with the £35mill from Carroll. Especially after you had a £11.5mill bid rejected for N'Zogbia in Jan. Well would have thought you would have tried to get a new number 9 or splashed the dosh on at least one player?

Re: Newcastle United News Thread!
At the end of the day we chased N'Zogbia, Erdinc, Gervinho and Gameiro and all of them chose other clubs or wanted to stay where they are. That speaks volumes on either the greed of players or that we can't compete with clubs that can offer European football when we are just pushing for a top ten finish. I'd be slightly hesitant about a marquee signing, after all it seems any player who joins us for a huge fee turns out to be Poopie for us
We only received £30m of the Carroll money upfront and I think about £3m of that has been put in to cover some incoming transfers, and I'd hope the club put aside a bit to offer those free agents a good signing on fee and decent wages that we can cover. Around £7m of the money has been spent on improving the facilities at the club, but we should still have a good amount of moeny to play around with. I could be wrong, but I think the big money (Close to £10m maybe) will be on the striker. If Enrique goes for £6m we'll probably pay £7m for Pieters.
One thing for sure is Ashley wants us to have a net transfer profit to cover any losses we might make over the season. Good financial planning, butthe lack of ambition could hamper our season.

Re: Newcastle United News Thread!
I really hope there's some add-ons that will make the transfer a bit more expensive. £6m is far too cheap for such a good player. Whilst he's awesome at going forward, and he's a decent defender as well, if you get a winger that is prepared to track back and do his defensive duties (Like Jonas) then Enrique will be excellent.

liverpool r still leaky at the back even with jose. injury to carragher n the floodgates open. glen j is a shocker at the back n agger will miss bout 20 games thru injry n skrtel is a liability

Re: Newcastle United News Thread!
Sure more details will come out later, apprantly he said his goodbyes this morning and is on his way to Liverpool.
£6mill is a good price for a player of his ability. More then likely be playing with Downing on the left so only time will tell see how they work together.
With this money coming in, surely you want Ashley to let Pardew buy one luxery signin?

Erik Pieters - After a bright start to his PSV career, he was benched after some indifferent performances lol! the fact he's hollands first choice left back brings me hope but the money from jose will go entirely on this deal to bring him in. The striker situation is gonna rumble on and on and we will no doubt end up with a toivonen or dierdoych (i'd say watching paint dry excites me more than these two names along with bendtner.

I think Liverpool will bring another CB before the window is shut. Am actually quite optimistic with our defense this season. Agger will have to prove his fitness this season agreed but he when he plays, he has good footballing ability and is great at bringing the ball out of defense and picking a pass. Srktel gets alot of unecessery flak but I think he is also a good CB and backup to Carra and Agger. Plus with Kelly being able to play RB and CB and other youngsters waiting in the wings like Flanno, Robbo and Wilson. I dont think it will be a big as a problem as many make out.

Re: Newcastle United News Thread!
I think Liverpool just have to pray injuries are kind to them and they could have a strong backline this season. Don't think you can underestimate the value of having a backline that plays regularly together.
Like John said, all of Enrique's fee will cover a move for Pieters who I've been impressed with.
Bendtner would be a great signing if we could get him for under £10m and it'd add a striker. If we get rid of Xisco and Ranger then I think the club will accept we may even need another body upfront.
I'd argue that it's only upfront that needs improving ASAP, the rest of our starting squad is actually quite good. It's more a case of having good players as backup rather than relying on the likes of Perch and Ferguson at the back.

6m for Enrique is good business for Newcastle. The guy is in the last year of his contract and clearly wouldnt be signing another one, so selling him for what we brought him for with one year left on his contract is sensible.

Re: Newcastle United News Thread!
Just one of Dennis Wise's brilliant moves in his role as DoF. Albeit we haven't paid the full £50k any season because he's been out on loan, but it was ridiculous for a player to be on that and still be Poopie.
I think this summer we might actually have managed to cut the wage bill if Jose goes. I'd be ecstatic if we announced Smith had found himself another club, I think he's our biggest earner that doesn't do anything. £60k a week!
Nolan and Xisco's wages off the bill save us just over £5m a year, but I think Cabaye might be seeing a bit of Nolans wage.

i nearly just choked to death on a bourbon biscuit after i read that xisco wage, seriously 50k a week???? if that is true that is astonishing - shocking!

Re: Newcastle United News Thread!
How have you avoided that figure for the past two years John? Every NUFC article at the start and end of each transfer window has spoke about Xisco and his wage. Hopefully we get close to £2m for him, never going to recoup his whole fee.

I think this shows the one thing that Ashley has at least done well at...he's sorting out the clubs finances...and stopping these rediculous outlays!
He just needs to realise that whilst we all would love to just find diamond after diamond like Tiote (and Hopefully Cabaye & Marveaux etc) he needs to be prepared to go out and spend big on essential players like new strikers.

Speaking to a few Dutch people and people who watch Dutch football, it seems like we've agreed a 7m euro fee and a 4 year deal with Pieters. All of them agree that we could have got him for around 5m euros if we had got him before we sold Enrique.

Re: Newcastle United News Thread!
Another bump, but it seems we are making progress in the market. Pieters supposedly at SJP over the weekend and now we've made a bid for a striker.

Hopefully get these deals sorted by next weekend, glad to see it's a striker who has some pace as well as strength.

Re: Newcastle United News Thread!
brilliant news regarding pieters, has has big boots to fill in replacing enrique but after ryan taylor's performance this is just what we need. Modibo Maiga seems very unprofessional refusing to play for sochaux but he wants to join the french revolution at st james'. I personally thought offensively we were dreadful against arsenal. This french revolution will either eventually pay off or will blow up in pardew's face. I think it's gonna be a while before the team settles, probably wont know until ben arfa comes back.

Re: Newcastle United News Thread!
Didn't think Raylor played as poorly as I've seen him before, although with Walcott not fully fit I think he was relieved of a lot of pressure he would have had. Obertan looked quite exciting when he came on and the crowd really got behind him, if he can grab a goal in the derby next week he'll have even more support at home. Pieters Grandad passed away recently and this is delaying the move in some way (reportedly).
Krul
Simpson, S.Taylor, Coloccini, Pieters
Barton, Cabaye, Tiote, Jonas
Ba, Best
To start if we get Maiga and Pieters. Must say Barton was pulling the strings for us in the Arsenal game, Cabaye didn't really get a hold in the game and was limited in the chances he could carve out. Tiote played his role very well and broke up play when we needed it.

Re: Newcastle United News Thread!
I think it would need a transfer fee now, but he hasn't been officialy brought off the transfer list.
I'm actually quite happy with our dealings in the window, if we get Pieters and Maiga for the reported price, we'll have spent roughly £8m from the Carroll fund. I'd guess our wage bill may be the same as it was last season, possibly an extra £20k per week, so we won't be spending big there either. For some reason, people with very little sense and very big mouths seem to think that because we have the money from the Carroll transfer that we should have spent a lot more this summer. But we've improved the squad where we needed better or more players and look stronger depth-wise than we did last season. I'm quite glad that the board are holding back some money, albeit to possibly cover end-of-year losses, but more likely for future investment.

Re: Newcastle United News Thread!
holding the money back for the january window is the correct thing to do as there is no guarantee that this squad is going to perform.
Maiga's record doesnt impress me really for ligue 1, 15 goals in 36 and only 3 goals for Mali in 16 caps. Also wouldnt he gone for a long period during African Cup of Nations along with Demba Ba & Tiote. Seriously this situation needs sorting because we need to improve offensively. Without Ben Arfa creating, we look poor. If we ever wanted a player from Sochaux it would be Marvin Martin, not this Maiga. I've never liked players who strike and say 'come and get me'.

15 goals in 36 is not a bad record at all, and I don't think 3 in 16 is that bad considering he's playing for Mali who aren't exactly world beaters.

Okay it's not bad but its not spectaular and its ligue 1. Gamiero had a much superior record and reputation. I just dont think it would be the best move for the club, if we sign another african along with tiote and ba who could possibly miss upto and over a month of the season due to ACON! Taking 3 first team players out of your squad is never a clever move. We need a proven player at this level ideally cos watching ameobi on saturday was embarrasing

Re: Newcastle United News Thread!
I don't know who you could possibly get though, who is a proven goalscorer in the Premier League.
Robbie Keane? He was probably a fan of yours as a boy.
He's old and hasn't looked good since he moved to Liverpool.
Jermain Defoe?
I'm not convinced he's as good of a goal scorer as some people think he is, he seems to go through barren spells without goals. Not sure he would move up north either.

John, goal records abroad mean very little when they move over here. I'd much rather have a player with an decent goalscoing record in France, but who also looks to have all the physical attributes needed to do well in the Premier League.
Leaky, he's gone to LA now so little chance of Keane achieving his boyhood dream of playing for Newcastle
Also reported we're in for Darnel Situ as well to come in to the youth set up. Everything looking promising.

It was orignally joked that we only bought him to stop him scoring against us. He can cross a ball well, but just don't ever feel comfortable with him as a defender. Don't think he offers much as a winger, probably best left as a sub to bring on and ping balls forward.

What do people think of Leon Best.
Just watching on Thursday (yes not the best opposition but they played well) i thought he was excellent as the target man. He won pretty much everything in the air, worked his a$$ off, was strong, aggressive and has pace.
Shola does none of those things.
Surely he should be in there as a target man, with a more skilful player alongside him to priovide the finishing.
I would even go with Sammy over his brother alongside Best.
Surely its time to move Shola down the pecking order

Would like to see Best and Ba be given a few games upfront with each other, could definitely give some defences some problems.
I keep, worringyly, hearing more and more rumours about Carlton Cole to us- please no!
Also looks like Ranger could be kicked out the club next, never looked like making something of himself at the top level. Might cut it better in the Championship.

I keep, worringyly, hearing more and more rumours about Carlton Cole to us- please no!
I think Ba would keep Cole out the team - if that's any consolation!
Thanks for trying but it's hardly any at all. After being linked to Erdinc, Maiga and Roux throughout the summer, I'd be bitterly disappointed if we ended up with Carlton Cole.

Personally...i dont even think Ba is much good...another Shola if you ask me.
Give Best a shot and until we sign a class striker play him with Vuckic or Sammy, or Ben Arfa (when hes back) upfront with him.
We do desperately need a big money signing though. But not a target man. We need a finisher...a proven one with quality.
