England vs Australia 4th Test, Trent Bridge
First topic message reminder :
As The Ashes thread has gone on a tangent arguing over who is SA's best fast bowler, let's get back on topic with a match thread.
Conditions for the 5 days look generally dry so there will be an almost certain result for either team. Also looking cloudy for large periods, so the loss of Anderson might be huge for England
England: Cook, Lyth, Bell, Root, Bairstow, Stokes, Buttler, Ali, Broad, Wood, Finn
Australia: Rogers, Warner, Smith, S Marsh, Clarke, Voges, Nevill, Johnson, Starc, Hazlewood, Lyon

when your 300-5 at the end of day one it can hurt your confidence.

Quite similar? All the way back in 1896, though. Spirited comeback by Australia all to no avail.

This looks like their best partnership. Good classy batsmen.. you're not getting them out.

Yup. I can see these two putting a century partnership together and really frustrating England.

as low as that?
they're already laying down the deepest roots. I'd say a quickfire 300 once they get going.

Australia bowled out for 60. Twenty minutes before lunch on the first day with Broad with figures of 8 for 15.

the fanatics will be delighted, they exploded with delight at the 50 and then got 10 more.
we shall have to see though if eng can do anything here.
In a dream world i'd like them to get 350 but 150+ might be really hard.

8/15 for Broad!
What a morning. Australia clueless, inept, humiliated; England accurate, threatening.
Good fielding all round.
Ashes coming back home.

Re: England vs Australia 4th Test, Trent Bridge
Oh no kpf was here earlier telling us how reliant England are on Anderson
To be fair noone could've confidently predicted this levels carnage, but it was always on the cards whichever team batted first.
The difference between this and lords can't just be down to a bit of grass and cloud though, it's pretty startling.
It should also put paid to the argument that England were demanding and cooking up dead pitches. Its seam movement that gives their bowlers the extra edge ( although again I can't believe that the absurd difference is solely down to that)

Not every day is a sunday ...expect Aus to take advantage of missing....Anderson's.....show more resolve, greater depth of specialist batters.... and have a decent day....means around 300ish for 5
Cheers KP_fan.
After your initial foray of England won't even win a test in this series, this probably means Australia will struggle to hit three digits!
It did! And they didn't! Thank you KP_Fan.

And a quick check of Cricinfo suggests that in innings where extra has top scored, the figure for extras has only been lower three times.

Re: England vs Australia 4th Test, Trent Bridge
I really don't think the pitch is doing that much. It is more to do with poor technique and the Aussies being mentally shot for me. I say this as the tail-enders actually showed that hanging around was far from impossible. England's task now is to pile on the runs, pile on the agony and pile on the pressure. If England can build a lead of 200 I'd say the urn is as good as won.
Like I said bebore though lets see how things stand after both teams have batted and then we'll get a far better idea of how things stand.

Broad's 8-15 is the 21st Best bowling analysis of all time
Amazingly its only the third cheapest 8-for!

Unbelievable morning for England.
I'd like to say well done on a fantastic performance, but reading the BBC's text commentary it seems the Aussies were the architects of their own downfall.
Regardless, a great display by Broad...has to rank up there with his best, surely?
Lets just hope England don't emulate the Aussies' batting performance. Would like to see us get 250 at least. Ought to be enough to guarantee the win (providing the rain holds off)

Oh I think I'd agree with that
But I was a little apprehensive overnight about sending them in without Jimmy on duty...mind you , I hadn't seen the actual pitch and conditions then !
Though as Craig suggests , I'm not sure it is a monster - and surely not a 60 all out strip !

The aussies must have felt confident when Jimmy was out but then as soon As Broad hit form they were shot.
Mustn't get ahead of ourselves though. This rebuilding England side have a long way to go but it's always nice when they can perform like that with the ball.

Well you just need to look who the top scorer for Australia was - Mitchell Johnson. Not a top order batsman by any means and lower order stuck around much longer too. That is not the characteristics of a minefield of a batting strip.

No strip is a 60ao strip. Even that corrugated iron one in the Windies where the Test got abandoned.
Dreadful from the Aussies - England need to keep their heads now and trust it isn't the minefield it was made to look. 300 and its all over
