England vs Australia 4th Test, Trent Bridge
First topic message reminder :
As The Ashes thread has gone on a tangent arguing over who is SA's best fast bowler, let's get back on topic with a match thread.
Conditions for the 5 days look generally dry so there will be an almost certain result for either team. Also looking cloudy for large periods, so the loss of Anderson might be huge for England
England: Cook, Lyth, Bell, Root, Bairstow, Stokes, Buttler, Ali, Broad, Wood, Finn
Australia: Rogers, Warner, Smith, S Marsh, Clarke, Voges, Nevill, Johnson, Starc, Hazlewood, Lyon

alfie wrote:Fifty stand. Some good batting ; some luck. One thing this means is that England won't get Smith in to face the new ball. And Broad is getting a bit frustrated.
Looks as if this is going to be a long slog . So the "other" bowlers are going to have to do their share.
I think there will be cricket on Saturday.
I think this rash crap from England this morning was potentially match losing. They need to learn to crush a team when they get a chance, not throw it.

Seems unlikely just for the fact that you handicap a person not the style of shot they are playing that day?!kingraf wrote:Gary Sobers has a handicap of eight playing right handed and scratch with his left hand. what the actual f.uck

Conditions looking good. Aussies looking well set. Think they will post a big score this time around.
Still even if they do make 500, England will only have to chase 170 to win. Still no cause for alarm yet.
Start worrying if Aus are 250/300-0 by close of play.

England's clumsy approach this morning did mean that they around 100 short of where they should have got to.
They're now facing their first actual test in the field - decent opening partnership, new ball rapidly losing its shine, and the fielding not as sharp as it was yesterday.

Scott - I assume the "eight" is more of an unofficial handicap.

The timely return of Nine Lives Warner. Australia needed him in this mode.

Clumsy or even downright negligent and why they are losing key matches.

It may have been clumsy but I think it was the right idea. With a 200+ run margin, the positive thing to do was look to score as quickly as possible.
IMO its good to see aggressive / positive captaincy for once, instead of the usual tedious "bat the other side out of the game" approach, where the opposition only has the option of batting to save the game.
If England can't win after building a 331 run lead in the first innings, they don't deserve to win, full stop.
Getting increasingly concerned by all these dropped chances though. What the hell has happened to England's fielding?

The "bat the other side out of the game" - isn't that how you crush and completely obliterate the opposition?
It's not as if England needed to be in a rush.

They'll run out of luck sooner or later. Warner in particular has more lives than a cat. Just remain patient

Sounds like he is bowling well here? This is only a hundred run partnership, and I think big partnerships need a lot of luck such as Bairstow had yesterday. Just need the breakthrough and this can easily turn into 200-5

Its certainly one way of winning...but boring and unimaginative and smacks of a lack of confidence in your bowling and fielding. Given the way we did both in the 1st innings, you can't blame Cook for being more adventurous.
How many times have people accused England of being boring?

Sooner or later. England need to stay patient.
It isn't going to be easy. Smith may well score big when he gets in , too. But there's a wealth of difference in reaching , say 220/1 on a first day , and reaching the same score - to see you are still trailing by over 100.
Have to say this has been very much Australia's day . Wood not bowling well...
And now he gets a wicket and is going to be no balled

Right but they cant possibly be paying him for the bowling, he averages over 100 this year so far. He appears to be on strike with the bat as well now so I can only assume hes contracted solely for catching.

Wood bowls a no-ball when he has Rogers caught at slip.
What else can go wrong today?

You'd think Warner is a matter of time... But trust me, I've seen him fluke his way to twin hundreds. Twice. Nine Lives Warner is the most dangerous cricketer mode in history. It's like Ash Ketchum flipping his Baseball cap around.

I would imagine you can still get pretty good odds on Australia declaring on 650-2 and setting England over 300 to win?
Reckon that might be worth a cheeky fiver.

it isn't good from England, too loose and really really poor to have such an approach this morning. now everything that worked yesterday is going wrong today and i'd have to say Aussie have to be fancying this now. They've done it before and must be tasting victory.

Wicket off no ball
Edges (inside and outside) but surviving
