England vs Australia 4th Test, Trent Bridge
First topic message reminder :
As The Ashes thread has gone on a tangent arguing over who is SA's best fast bowler, let's get back on topic with a match thread.
Conditions for the 5 days look generally dry so there will be an almost certain result for either team. Also looking cloudy for large periods, so the loss of Anderson might be huge for England
England: Cook, Lyth, Bell, Root, Bairstow, Stokes, Buttler, Ali, Broad, Wood, Finn
Australia: Rogers, Warner, Smith, S Marsh, Clarke, Voges, Nevill, Johnson, Starc, Hazlewood, Lyon

Wood reprieved, costs 5 runs.
Good for Stokes to get one, would've been a great injustice had this spell gone unrewarded

Re: England vs Australia 4th Test, Trent Bridge
And by the way I'm claiming that one : only a few balls after I joined the Reverse Curse Party
Stokes really earned that. And another fantastic catch from Root , who can do no wrong...
Get one of these and we are into the tail

That Warner six was a no ball too - any danger of doing your jobs umpires?

Warners had more edges than the top 5 faced balls in the first innings. Its beyond ridiculous.

Re: England vs Australia 4th Test, Trent Bridge
Have to say I'm disappointed with Wood today. Quite apart from the no balls , he is sending down too many poor deliveries.
Might be trying a bit too hard ? Probably thinks that with Finn back in the side he is in trouble when Jimmy recovers fitness. Needs to relax a bit , I reckon.
Two for Stokes
Warner runs out of luck...

Nine Lives Warner has obviously used up all his luck!
Stokes does the biz again...Aus 130-2!
Just when they were starting to look dangerous. That'll slow things down a bit.

Warner is such a lovely bloke though, it's always sad to see.
I think the evening can see some wickets if there is some moisture off the river and some movement.

400 definitely on for Aussie though, 380 minimum. All about how Eng cope in the chase if that happens.
Eng must keep the score down and chip away at a couple more if they can. The morning will be a much tougher test again for Aussie.

Indeed gsc. 350 still very gettable though, depends how things start to move tonight or tomorrow.
I really wish England got another 50 and used up some more time.

Re: England vs Australia 4th Test, Trent Bridge
...and off we go again...
Its calypso-collapso time for Aus as Stokes bags his third, dismissing Marsh for just 2.
Are the nerves setting in again and is this about to end very messily?
And before I even finish typing this, Broad gets rid of Smith for just 5 and Aus are 136-4.
This could be all over sooner rather than later.

That's a promising patch. Gsc was spot on about patience.
Eng might be chasing a small chase. I don't think 10 would worry them.

Stokes gets his third ...and presumably ends the Test career of S.Marsh.
And Broad gets the big one : yahoo:

Gave Australia got enough batsmen to replace both S. Marsh and Voges? Presumably Mitch Marsh comes back in for one.

Should see a little more help from the conditions this evening hopefully.
If either of these two go then it's not really saveable for Aussie and I already wonder if their thoughts will have gone from winning to surviving in just under 30 minutes?

Nice little end to that session.
Clarke will have to play the innings of his life if he doesn't want to lose a fifth Ashes series as a player.
Might be over tonight!

Australia's thoughts can't go to surviving. It's only Day 2!! They have to try win even from here. The problem being, Winning in Australia seems to be a glorious pursuit. One achieved with the batting elegance of a Naomi Campbell. If they win. It HAS to be at four an over. It has to be positive. It HAS to be "taking the initiative".

Samuel Mather: You're joking! The Australian batting coach is called Grey Blewett?? That's just too good to be true!

Very true. I also note one of Clarke's famous "bold and clever declarations" hasn't been seen in this series yet. Easy to do if you are playing well, not so much if you are batting like a dog's breakfast

If they can't find a better player than Marsh they really are in trouble ! There are a few in the Shield who could be tried ; though in truth the cupboard looks a bit thin at present. Next week I reckon they would be well advised to recall the much maligned Watson ; but they have to try some new bats after this series. Rogers - who is still playing well - and Clarke are on the way out ; and I don't think these fellows are worth persevering with.

Australia bringing back Watson reminds me of when England used to recall Hick or Ramprakash every third or fourth Test
Their cupboard must be beyond bare if that's the best option, though from the squad they have it looks like it is

Crucial times, as it stands Aussie will no doubt be seeing this as winnable with such titans in at the crease.
Remove one though and even they may start to question. Can they be removed though?

Well Gillespie did say they had a Dad's Army squad ...really haven't many options. Which I why I couldn't see why most people had them as such hot favourites before the series : always were at risk if Clarke didn't fire , or either of the openers wasn't having a good series.
At least Watson tends to get 30

Surviving and trying to win the game are the same thing here. Australia have to grind England out a bit and then pick up the rate. You cant rely on the luck Warner had

Shane Warne was starting to sound quite bullish just before Rogers got out. But most of the Aussie confidence around this match has sounded a bit like whistling in the dark.
They have fought well today ; up to a point. But they are one collapse away from surrendering the urn this evening...

Finn back on at last. Very sparingly used today ; and was down on pace earlier. Has he got a problem ?
Was hoping for a better follow up from him after his fine match at Edgbaston . But perhaps he just has trouble backing up in these closely scheduled Tests.
Could do with a good burst from him now.

Re: England vs Australia 4th Test, Trent Bridge
Well, I called it absolutely wrong. I went 3-0 Aus or 2-1 Aus (under the assumption that one of the games would be of could go either way kind). Just thought the Aussie bowlers would be too hot for your batsmen (not been completely wrong here), didn't see Australian batsmen basically decide the way they played in the world cup would be the way to play no matter the conditions. Or situation. Glad I didn't bet on it, as a rule I don't bet on very short odds for the simple reason that the money back isn't worth the risk (although my Hazlewood punt seems a dream deferred now).
