First topic message reminder :

As The Ashes thread has gone on a tangent arguing over who is SA's best fast bowler, let's get back on topic with a match thread.

Conditions for the 5 days look generally dry so there will be an almost certain result for either team. Also looking cloudy for large periods, so the loss of Anderson might be huge for England

England: Cook, Lyth, Bell, Root, Bairstow, Stokes, Buttler, Ali, Broad, Wood, Finn

Australia: Rogers, Warner, Smith, S Marsh, Clarke, Voges, Nevill, Johnson, Starc, Hazlewood, Lyon

Crumbs the spread betters must be havibg heart attacks i this game.

Fair play to Stokes, he badly beeded a good returb with the all after some truely awful figures this summer ad from what Ive followed he thoroughly deserved the wickets.

Woods form is a bit of a worry mid.

Clarke could really do with showig some battle at least

Aussie only 163 behind. I can genuinely see a chase of between 50-100 for England.

Wood back too. Time one of these fellows made a contribution - can't leave all the work to Broad.

Suppose we will see Moeen soon ; though perhaps Root will have the golden arm ? Need a wicket soon if they want to finish this tonight.

Ah, I'll never get as good as that 9/2 that was offered on England pre-series ever again. And Joe Root to be top batsman at 11/4 - reckon the bookmakers will have him sussed out as the spellbinding talent he so obviously is.

Game starting to drift.

Woods been somewhat underwhelming. Probably thankful they wont have any reason to risk Jimmy at the Oval

Like I said, Duty. Root is the ECB's dream. The bums on seats superstar quality of Kevin Pietersen, the will never get himself into an embarrassing pickle of Cook. Also the blonde hair blue eyed doppelganger of Ellen DeGeneres

It's going to be a struggle to replace Anderson. Nobody is putting themselves forward as a clear candidate.

If Jimmy is fit I reckon he will be back . Agree they shouldnt take any risks ; but I'm hearing he is making good progress.

Wicket for Wood Yahoo

Combination catch ...Cook to Bell

Needed that , with Stokes going off injured. Clarke still can't buy a run.

I think Clarke will step aside himself after this game. Smith to captain at the Oval and Clarke will retire.

Who are they going to drop him for for the last test?

They will let him fall on his own sword after the series. As much as anything the other captain isnt here

He looks cooked though, as a player ad captain

Surely such a class player will be given time to figure it out?

Stokes gone as well now? in favour of aussie getting a 50-100 lead then surely, lack of bowlers is a worry.

Weird because I'd put stokes more in the mould of a KP/Flintoff

Root is more Trott-like imo - just churns out runs for fun

Well, if this match does stretch into tomorrow, it won't be for long.

Sad to see a once-great player reduced to what Clarke has become.

On a cheerier note, England only need another 5 wickets...and I can't now see them needing to bat again. Sticking with my prediction of Aus all out for 250-ish (290 tops).

.

Hes had time. Highest score this year 47 and only 4 times past 20 in his last 20 test innings. 2 scores over 50 i 31 innings going ack to halfway through the last Ashes.
Eve last time he was over he was patchy and scratchy due to back problems. You have to go back to 2012 to see when he was a true class player.

Hes 34 now and getting worse. He doesnt agree with the selections ad is captaining a divided losing side. If he doesnt go it just shows that Aussies have no concept of walking

The umpires need to start doing their jobs properly, if he thinks it's a no ball then call it instead of using the safety net of the third umpire, absolute joke.

Why are they only reviewing the wickets? Surely they should be reviewing every ball if they're not sure...

Really annoying losing not one but two wickets to no balls this afternoon. All for the sake of a few meaningless centimeters .

Waste of effort and good catching. Maybe not crucial today , but can be in some games.

England doing this the hard way today.

It's been a strange old series. England had questions which haven't really been answered.
Could Ballance stand up to the rigours of intl cricket?
Was Bell finished?
Do they have an attack outside of Broad and Anderson?
Is Lyth really an opener?
Can Ali really make a stand alone front line seamer?

They haven't seemed to answer any of them in the affirmative, and are cruising to another crushing win. What the heck?

Look at Ponting ... he shouldve gone after if not before the SA tour.
Yep he roared back at home but that just bought him another year limping on getting in the way.
If he was the right side of 32 Id have more sympathy but the decline is all round. He doest bowl because of his back and hes hardly the most agile guy in the field now either.

Voges has faced 70 deliveries and folk are describing it as hanging around and being unmovable. I guess that sums this game up.

Add a missed stumping to the list ...

Still creating chances : still suspect if they get one now they might roll things up quite quickly. But the tiredness is creeping in.

Suspect you are correct , trebs : will be a couple of hours tomorrow. Either a small chase or a "narrow" innings win.

England don't want this do they, playing like distracted children at the moment,

every mistake gives aussie a stronger chance of victory. I think they might even be edging toward the more likely to do so.
