Can GGG Catch The Hopkins Defense Record At 160?
Interesting post here - I didn't realise how close Golovkin was to Hopkins' record (if you count "interim" and "regular" titles):
http://www.boxingscene.com/-golovkin-catch-hopkins-defense-record-160--94855?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter
Of course, Monzon holds the true championship defense record (14 defenses of the championship rather than an alphabet belt).

This will be his 5th (had to check) as "Super duper numero uno interim to orgasmic" WBA champ. Before then he held the WBA Belt.
Fu<k knows. Who cares as well, they give belts away nowadays and only Truss seems to think they count for something when it suits his argument surrounding a certain WW fighter calling the shots.

Is the middleweight divison the best it has ever looked? Don't think I have ever seen a divison so stacked with talent in boxing history.
Jones Jr and Hagler would be fooked now. Some dangerous guys here.

Tell me about it. #3 rated Andy Lee would just simply be too good, far too good. He must've had AIDs or something in his fight with Chavez Jr, no other way to explain that loss away as he'd beat him the other 99 times out of 100. And they'd be fooked against Cotto as remember that Cotto is the middleweight champ at 115lbs, not 160lbs.

Re: Can GGG Catch The Hopkins Defense Record At 160?
Cotto could be Heavyweight champion if Klits fought him at catch weight.
GGG is a very good, possibly great fighter, fighting in a divison full of sh1t. Might seem blunt but it's a fact. I think the heavyweight division excites me more these days and that says a lot.

Cotto vs Canelo
Winner vs GGG
Likes of Trout, Lara to step up, Jacobs/Eubank Jr/BJS coming through.
Dicks all over the HW division.

Re: Can GGG Catch The Hopkins Defense Record At 160?
He's made 9 full alphabet defenses (not including interim titles). Lemieux will be his tenth (fifteenth if you count Quigg as a world champion).
Funnily enough, his career trajectory is similar to Hopkins'. There are some on here who hail Hopkins as one of the greatest ever middleweights despite the fact he fought a similar standard of opposition through his first 9 ABC defenses. No doubt they'd have been shouting for Hopkins to move up and face Roy Jones had they been around then.
The Trinidad-Cotto parallel's are a little spooky also.

Haz a wee question. You are a big fan of GGG. Believe it or not, so am I.
I remember you created the thread, best wins in the last 50 years. Were would you stick GGG in that if only wins count??

If we are to assume that he's close to Hopkins record then his current opposition doesn't compare. At a similar stage Bhop had fought Trinidad, Johnson, Holmes and Jackson, all better than Macklin, Murray or Geale.

I think middleweight is heating up. Ogogo coming through (Britain has a host of good young middles including Langford, Etches, Blackwell etc.) and the likes of Andrade and Julian Williams likely to move up should Alvarez make his move permanent.
Cotto vs Alvarez and Golovkin vs Lemieux are two of the year's best match-ups.

We don't want him jumping off a bridge...or self harming...
Here goes...
1. GGG
2. Greb
3. Monzon
4. Hopkins
5. Hagler...

I would put Murray in at number 3, with Macklin at 5. Otherwise good list!

If we're talking about full alphabet defenses then Hopkins had fought comparable opposition in Allen, Brown and Johnson (along with your Lipsey's, Frank's etc.)

I'll define it for you Adam................
A world champion is someone like Stevie Cruz and Esparragoza.......But not Azumah Nelson who was a great WBC champion at the same time..
Or Michael Spinks who refused to fight Tyson....when Tyson had three belts..
I'll define a village idiot for you as well............................Haz.

So.....petty insults aside (were we not giving you enough attention?) are you advocating Golovkin as a world champion rather than a titlist? You're claiming Golovkin is THE champion and has made 14 defenses presumably (equalling Monzon)?

Golovkin is THE champion. Cotto was when he beat Martinez but his reign has been a farce and every man and his dog knows, GGG would kick the living sh1t out of Cotto.

Re: Can GGG Catch The Hopkins Defense Record At 160?
No Haz unfortunately not, however the titles are sh1t compared to previous eras. Too many alphabets. I hardly look at titles now, when I rate who is the best.
I am Floyds biggest fan but he hasn't beat 22 world champions, as he likes to tell us. He has defeated 22 guys that held a title. Obviosuly some of the guys were proper champions. Others were like Frampton or Quigg.
End of story GGG is the man at this weight. Will he beat Hopkins record?? Not sure, or really care that much. What I do know is, no man form Super Middle down, not named Andre Ward can beat this guy.
I do have high praise for him. Just hope he gets the fights at middle or makes the inevitable move to SMM.

I'm still with the purists on this one. Cotto is the champion until deposed in the ring. That's where championships are won or lost.
As for the alphabet defense palaver - I think he can eclipse Hopkins (especially when one considers Hopkins has a NC in there - meaning he only made 19 defenses).
Monzon holds the true record. Only Hagler came close to it.

Whatever you think of both Cotto and Canelo, they've never been afraid to fight the best. Cotto's record is amazing: Mayweather, Pacquiao, Mosley, Margarito and Martinez with only the latter past his best.

Cotto is a great boxer. If he uses his brain he could beat Canelo. I side with Canelo because of youth but Cotto is a very good boxer.
Even Mayweather rates Cotto the boxer. Maidana pushed Floyd on the scorecards but I think Cotto inflicted more damage on Floyd. He made the fight with Floyd competitve and enjoyable to watch.

Re: Can GGG Catch The Hopkins Defense Record At 160?
I only rate Cotto when he's on the front foot. He was an excellent LWW when he was confident enough to bully his opponents. I think the way Flloyd fought Cotto allowed Cotto to show his best attributes. As did Martinez and Foreman with their difficulties in using their feet.
Cotto looked poor trying to box a bigger man in Trout. Pacs speed and Margs chin also took away Cottos confidence and sent him into his shell.
I'm expecting Alvarez size and calmness to send Cotto into his more negative side and I think he gets beaten handily

Good points - Roach has him back on the front foot of late but can he do that with Alvarez?

Between 154 and 160 (middleweight, basically).
It comes to something when people rag on Cotto and Canelo's willingness to fight the best.

The catchweight suits Canelo just fine - he fights at 155. He requested 156 but I'm sure he's more than happy with the weights.
