The St Andrews Club has probably the worst Club Championship you can imagine. Usual top 16 qualifying, but a wretched, anti climax of a final of only 18 holes on a Friday night after having played Mon or Tues, Wed, Thurs and then final on Friday. Just pathetic and sells the title short by having such a terrible non event of a final.
All rounds in one week? Can't imagine anyone would enter this, unless nobody at the club has a job / family.
Yes Ray, all in one week, although the qualification rounds take place two weeks prior to the knockouts. It's such an insular club run mostly for those who live/work or who have never left St.Andrews in their life. They are so backward they don't even have online booking for competitions. You actually have to go in personally to sign up, or email a reluctant secretary who makes you feel like you're putting him out.

Another good round yesterday and a .4 cut back to 24! Still didn’t win the competition as I did my usual trick of having a blinding front 9 and a cr@p back 9 - came 3rd with all 3 of us on the same score

Yes unlikely Ray, this is Norfolk we're talking about not Puerto Banus!

Re: Tell us about your game today...
In the past I have thought myself of being a bit of a fraud on this forum. (....don't jump in now, wait to you read the rest... ) That's because I haven't been able to play golf. Years ago a change in job role meant I was not able to get out during the week, and I didn't want to pay for a 7 day membership at a golf club only to be able to play at weekends. (I know that's what some people do, but it's not for me.) Then I had some personal issues which meant I was not able to play when I retired. But receiving some specialist advice I can now manage my condition. So I have now rejoined a golf club I played at during the early 90's - the same one that Davie is a member of. So today was the first proper game of golf I have played in about 20 years. I have to play 3 rounds with a member to gain a handicap. So I was not expecting much. And I didn't get much. 105 strokes, including a 12 on one hole. Several lost balls. But enough good shots to know that I can knock up to 20 shots off that total in the future. Parred a couple of holes. Onwards!

Let me guess, the 12 on one hole was 16th?

You guessed right. One lost ball and three to get out of a bunker helped!

First decent performance in a comp yesterday for far too long! Beaten into 2nd place on countback and a 1.6 cut!
40pts on a very hard and fast track - conditions probably helped me more than others being a very short hitter - even a couple of semi-scuffed tee shots went further than I usually hit it!

Well done INW Welcome to the HIO club!
I’m on a bit of a roll. Played the Alternative Day Medal today and shot a gross 88 (nett 64) for another handicap cut - now down to 22.6! Not long ago I was struggling to play to 25 and was creeping up. I know the course is running in this dry weather but it was my short game and putting which did it for me today

Re: Tell us about your game today...
We had the Club Championship at the weekend. Ours is a 36 hole scratch medal: 1st round on Saturday, then top 20 and ties qualify for round 2 on Sunday.
I played well on Saturday. Good "game management" was the key and I had nothing worse than a bogey on the scorecard. The hardest part was negotiating with Mrs R for a pass to play on Sunday, but I secured it in the warm glow of an England win and the promise of a takeaway.
Don't know why I bothered. Absolute shocker on Sunday. I was striking it sweetly on the range but as soon as I stepped on to the course my swing just disappeared. And of course the confidence just drained away, standing over the ball I felt like Raheem Sterling in front of goal.
What I really enjoyed was that on both days they moved the tees around to change things up. Everyone plays their home course from the white tees week in week out and you develop a strategy and club selection for each hole. It was refreshing to take us out of our comfort zone. For example, the 9th is a short par 4 of 330 yards, the fairway starts funneling in as you get closer to the green, which is elevated and protected by a big bunker wrapped around the front. I normally hit driver which usually leaves me a 60-80 yard pitch and I can generate good spin from this distance. On Sunday we played from the red tees 50 yards forward. Driving the green was an option for the big hitters, but this required a carry in excess of 260 yards with no margin for error. I hit a hybrid to my usual target zone, but I had to stop and think to work out what club to hit from the tee. I'd love to see this more often.

Well, I lost the final by one hole - it was a close match but I was 2 up at one point so I'm a tad annoyed I let it go. I'm now in the semi-final of the other one and play that in two weeks' time.LadyPutt wrote:So I'm in the final of one and the quarter-final of another. Bring it on!

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Played my third round for handicap certificate today. Best round of the three. 91 strokes. Including a birdie on the last hole a par 5. (Driver, 5 wood, 9 iron stone dead). Didn’t lose a ball either. Don’t know exactly how they work things out as I believe they disregard anything over +2 on a hole. So i think I may get around the low 20’s which is what I started at 25 years ago. I got down to 14 after a while then, but I am aiming for 18 by next year.

Despite the need for 3 cards they only looks at your best one - and then discard any abnormally large numbers on that card - so you'll be looking to 21 unless you had any big numbers in your 91. Did you play a round with a committee member? That seems to be necessary now - I think I was the last member there (8 or 9 years ago) to get a handicap without a committee card being necessary - they brought that rule in a week later!

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Hi Davie. No big numbers - biggest "over par" was a 7 on a par 4 and two 6's on par 3's. As regards being with a committee member, yes I did as that was done for me by the competition organisers, and it was a qualifying competition for the rest of them.Davie wrote:I'm never wrong wrote:Played my third round for handicap certificate today. Re: Tell us about your game today...
I am steadily improving. Round in 86 today (net 67 - 3 under par) for 39 stableford points. Still lost to fellow competitor with 42 points. As I have only just started golf again, I am keeping a record of my scores. (Sad, I know). I found a website HERE which lets you enter your scores and keeps them on a database (on your own computer). It can even do stableford scores, and matches between two people. You need Excel or similar...

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Off to the Belfry tomorrow for my annual golf trip, Brazabon in the afternoon, PGA Thursday morning. Usually play the third “standard” course which is the only one I ever do OK on, giving it a miss this year. Hoping this time is different for the other 2, found a bit of length and accuracy from somewhere, for me these marquee courses are usually just too long so every par 4 is a challenge. We shall see!

Penultimate "major" of the year yesterday. 2 round scratch competition and knew I needed a 70 to tie. Started out with 2 bogies and then the rain came on heavy on the back 9, missed an 8 foot birdie putt on the last to miss out by one.
Game is in good shape, but a tough way to lose.

Our greens are recovering from summer maintenance work, so we had a "fun" team comp at the weekend followed by a family BBQ. Kids running around the putting green in front of the clubhouse, big inflatables etc. Was stunned when some old woman told my wife to keep my children quiet, because there was "an important" ladies competition going on....
Important
Fair enough if they were running all over the course, but they were putting on the practice green. We were leaving so I couldn't be bothered to start something.... but some people at golf clubs really are full of their own self-importance

Not played either course, but heard mixed reviews. By all accounts it used to be fantastic but since they went bust the conditioning has gone downhill as the budget just isn't there any more. We considered it as a potential wedding venue - it is a really beautiful place.

Seeing as I was struggling with my game completely this time last year, handicap was creeping up and then I was given an additional shot at the annual review, I am delighted to have made the final of two knockouts and cut my handicap by 2 shots this year. Haven’t looked at this thread in weeks as I haven’t exactly had the best of seasons, looks like your game is on the up tho Ladyputt. You too Supes by the looks of the post from a couple of weeks ago.
I’m about to set off on my annual trip to the Tassie, not sure how it’s gonna go this year. Spent early summer having a good old 0.1 fest, its beginning to turn around now with a 0.2 & 0.4 cut in recent weeks interspersed with 2 missed the buffer by ones. Would like to think I’d make the handicap knockout this year of what I’d consider is now a fairly generous handicap (7) but we’ll see. It really could go either way this year.

Well, I just had my first game of golf after my two week holiday to the USA. Turned up, no practice hits or swings and went on to score net 3 under with a total of 39 points. Gradually getting the speed of the greens. Ball still surprisingly running a long way. Indeed, if I hadn't sort of duffed my first tee shot, it would have been in the water. One tee shot never got more than a foot of the ground, but managed to roll onto the green. All in all, this hacker is pleased with his round. Just need to repeat it on Monday in a qualifying comp.
