Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
First topic message reminder :
It's more the leaving it to the last minute which is nonsense. It is appalling business practice for the buyer to do this, as the seller knows they can keep the price high.
What is the point in the window being open for two months if nothing gets done until the last day? Just make it a day long, the opposite of a DFS sale.

Thought you might get a kick out of some the places I mentioned...raycastleunited wrote:Getting very specific there Grumps. Some familiar places...
Don't remember Nevada Bob's but this was back in the late 80's/early 90's so they might not have been around then. Plus I was a kid so probably wouldn't have noticed anyway.raycastleunited wrote:Almost, that would be Finchley Road in Golders Green. There used to be a couple of stores there: Nevada Bob's, where incidentally I bought my first full set of clubs also (Dunlop too) but is long gone. American Golf is still there, bought some shoes there a few months ago.1GrumpyGolfer wrote:

Used to take some lessons at the range there for a little while; most likely picking up Chinese from the Oakwood Palace on the way home. Funny you mention the one in Broadgate Circle as that's where I got the Titleist wood from.raycastleunited wrote:This shop is still going strong, they have good deals here. Bought a Mizuno wedge here recently... I use the driving range here in winter and it is difficult to resist the shop. Also used to be a Nevada Bob's... what has happened to this chain? There used to be one in the city in Broadgate Circle but this is now AG.1GrumpyGolfer wrote:
Didn't buy a full set of irons until my early twenties where I bought some Cobra oversize irons from Trent Park Golf Club (Oakwood).
Had to fact check this Ray as I didn't think I got my driver as late as that. I moved from the Rivers to Burnham in 2005 and then to the States later the same year and I know it was already in the bag before those moves. According to TaylorMade's club history http://taylormadegolf.com/R-history.html?icid=MOGPLP-link-top3 the R300 series launched in 2001, R500 series in 2002, and the R510TP came out in 2003. In 2004 they launched the R7 series and all the variants it spawned up until the R9 launched in 2009. I've now realised my driver head is from 2005, could very well be time for an upgrade...raycastleunited wrote:The R540 came out in 2005. I only know this because I bought an R320 in 2004 and remember debating whether to wait a few months for the R500. This was back in the day when TM had the strange idea of releasing new products every two years instead of every 2 minutes. TM released the R300 series in 2003, the R500 series in 2005, the R7 series in 2007, the R9 in 2009, well you get the message.1GrumpyGolfer wrote:

Back in the day any and all golf talk was banned on the "Anything Goes" thread, Roller. The thread's creator was ruthless when it came to this and would delete all posts mentioning golf
Indeed, shame the "anything" that he suggested as going ended up being himself though!

Mac .. it's a long long time since I was a moderator here - but right from the very start of the V2 forum it was a hard and fast rule that any images, videos etc. were either banned, or they later agreed that they were allowed as long as "hidden". That had nothing to do with NSFW content - just to keep the look of the forum as low profile as possible so that it didn't look too obvious for anyone browsing at work.
You've been here long enough to know that - and even if you have conveniently forgotten it's still there in a the site rules

Mac. Davie's explained it very well. It's not the content as such (that would simply be removed), it's one of the site ground rules.

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
I was reading a website about all the eccentricities of both maternal and paternal leave in the workplace. For example does it discourage employers from hiring women of child bearing age? Is it inevitable that because the women might take long absences from work, they will have to accept lower salaries to compensate for the time lost and the cost of the possible training and wages of a substitute while they are gone? Also is that fair to the women who have to accept the lower salary but will never have children and therefore benefit from maternity leave? The same could apply to men who have paternity leave opposed to men who remain childless. A very complex issue.

Flip side is that you stand still and get overtaken.
Citeh want the best and they see this as an improvement. Not saying it will actually end up being an improvement but PG is widely regarded as one of if not the best out there.
Only question mark for me is PG hasn't been anywhere where he's needed to build anything yet, walked in to 2 of the best teams on the planet at something near the peak of their powers. Good as they are, I don't see City as being unquestionably top of the English, let alone European, tree so he'll have some work to do.
Will be interesting to see who he'll bring in and where he takes it to...
Very tough on Pellegrini in my opinion, but convinced he'll get a top job quite easily (he might be quite good down the road in Salford...)

He may as well have walked into a ready built team, as I am sure his transfer hit list has been posted to Abu dhabi already. The players he wants will be waiting on him when he arrives no doubt.

When pep took over barcelona they had finished 3rd well behind real madrid, didn't win the cup or make the final though made the semis of Europe. They weren't a team St the peak of their powers. I think because of what he achieved so soon people seem to think this. He changed the squad getting rid of disruptive players and big names like Ronaldinho deco and zambrotta. And brought in pique who couldn't get a game at man utd, busquets and Daniel Alves. Bayern munich though he walked into a top squad though. Man City will be interesting. World's best managers coming to England shame the world's best players don't fancy it.

You could always turn to playing golf full time. You were a club champ last year so only a small step in performance would be needed to play on a minor tour.

The standard on the EuroPro tour is shocking, scores of 90+ are common place, they only benefit a couple of players to make the jump to Challenge Tour, the rest are pipe dreamers make nothing or are bankrolled by parents.

Waste of money Mac, £300 to enter a tournament, plus fuel, food, hotel.
Money spinner for Barry Hearn, waste of time for anyone who doesn't win 2-3 tournaments a year minimum.

Ha ha, there's a chasm between a club golfer like me and the guys at the top end of even a tinpot tour like the Europro.
If I won the Euromillions or something I might give it a crack, but as a way of making your living, you might as well pick up coins outside a nightclub.

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
Mac the difference between being club champ and progress through even the minor pro tours is huge. The difference between scratch & +3 is comparable to the difference between 18 & scratch. The difference between amateur +3s and regular tour pros is about the same again. You have to be very very very good and then some to make a career out of being a touring pro.
Edit: Ah I see Super beat me to it

Almost certainly you wouldn't be last most if not all weeks, but how many weeks over a season do you think you'd be in enough prize money to cover your costs? It's not like they pay down to everyone making the cut.

I wouldn't be in the prize money at all JAS in most likelihood, I might make 1-2 cuts a season, but I'd be lucky to make enough to cover one tournament entry in a year. A friend of mine is on it, who turned pro at +3, so obviously much better than me but who makes a considerable net loss each year and is covered by charity, sponsorship and handouts. This year will most likely be make or break for him. If he doesn't win or come close to winning a tournament, could be a mars bar salesman for him.

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
So true all of this.
A few years ago we had a young scratch golfer at our club who was head and shoulders above anyone else locally. Held the course record with a 9 under 63 and would shoot 4 or 5 under on a regular basis. About 20 of us club members sponsored him to turn pro on the basis that any tournament winnings, after the deduction of his expenses, would be split equally between the syndicate and the player. It was a 3 year agreement and I personally signed up to £600 a year.
Needless to say 3 years later I was £1800 poorer...

Super - You will get a lot better when you have all day to practice. It is not like for like comparing your current level to what it will be once you have been unemployed for a month or so. Throw in a couple of lessons and you will be ripping up the tartan tour in no time.

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
Yep I've seen the same, a couple of Club champions both turned pro at +3 about 5 years ago. 1 back in amateur ranks the other has parents with deeper pockets and has got to QSchool final QF once. He has won a low key event or 2. It's a long long slog though. The other guy had won the Lagonda Trophy as an Am and both had been England squad players. 20 years earlier of course we had another 2 turn pro at +3 one of them won the Brabazon Trophy before turning pro but never progressed as a pro, the other one has had a decent Pro career tho :-)
